Urban CLTS Activities

Pilots within Pan African CLTS Programme• Kenya – Nairobi/ Mathare • Uganda- Tororo

Activities within Sanitation Peri-urban Areas Programme• Ethiopia- different cities• Zambia- Lusaka

• Malawi- Mzuzu

Kenya-Nairobi- Mathare 10

UCLTS Activities consist of:

• Basic CLTS elements (Pre-triggering- Triggering- follow up)

• GIS mapping of the sanitation problem

• Working with natural leaders/ land lords

• Working with CCS- training sanitation entrepreneurs

• Media campaign- Kenya Broadway Cooperation

Kenya-Nairobi- Mathare 10

Results so far:

• Latrines constructed by landlords for their tenants.

• New communal toilet constructed and existing ones upgrated.

• Observed use of the bucket system at night.

• Decrease in OD

• Cleared OD areas used for urban agriculture/ football fields.

• UCLTS activities started in other informal areas

• Formation of Urban sanitation movement

• Solid waste collection point made

• Enforcement of sanitation and environmental laws

Consensus building with all stakeholders Selection and Training of CLTS Facilitators Triggering the villages and identifying natural leaders in each village Orientation for Natural Leaders (Village CLTSH Coordinating Committee) on Household Dialogue and Community Conversation Facilitation Organizing Household dialogues and community conversations facilitated by the Natural Leaders Change monitoring through NLs reports audit; HHs and villages visit; Mont review meetings Facilitating establishment of sanitation and hygiene business association of the natural leaders’ network Linking the network to loan access for sanitation ladder improvement and marketing

• Hand washing needs more attention

• Health messages a valuable addition – maybe more for sustaining than triggering?

• More Post triggering support - regular reverification & technical support

• Trigger as many people as possible – especially women!

• Improve access to finance

• Improve access to sanitation marketing

• Consensus building with all stakeholders.

• Selection and Training of CLTS Facilitators.

• Triggering and identifying natural leaders.

Lessons learned UCLTS

• Trigger during public holidays and more then once.

• Reasons for OD were different- solutions needed to be different.

• Secure land tenure is crucial for inventment in sanitation

• Involvement governments from the start.

• Use different media options.

• UCLTS as part of larger urban sanitation programme to inprove sanitation service delivery.
