ROAMING

Page 18: Pride Toronto Public Safety Volunteer Training

ROAMING - WHAT TO DO

IF this is your first shift please arrive 30 minutes before to allow sufficient processing time to get

your badge and t-shirt

(if you have already received your badge, then 10-15 minutes is good)

Check in with both the Volunteer HQ team and the PS HQ Supervisors

Receive information on assigned area & partner (receive radio if applicable)

Go out and roam in area assigned (be sure to check in with Dispatch when you arrive in your

zone, and when you leave for breaks, etc)

At end of shift return to HQ – sign in Radio & sign out

Page 19: Pride Toronto Public Safety Volunteer Training

WHAT IS ROAMING?

Simply: we provide on-foot patrol of the entire festival site

We interact with the public and provide general assistance as needed

Programming information (What time is ______ concert happening?)

Information regarding site locations (Where is the Clean, Sober & Proud area?)

Other information as needed (How do I get assistance if I have mobility concerns?)

We alert the appropriate individuals (EMS, TPS, etc), and act as OBSERVERS in situations requiring this type

of intervention

What we do NOT do:

Act as physical intervenors in conflict

Provide medical assistance (regardless of certification in First AID/CPR)

Involve ourselves as PRIDE volunteers in situations outside of the Festival boundaries

Page 20: Pride Toronto Public Safety Volunteer Training

IDENTIFYING AN INCIDENT…

A festival attendee is acting in a disruptive and offensive manner that is impacting those in the immediate

vicinity

An attendee is sitting on the sidewalk, head down and mumbles that they have not drank any water all day

An attendee is making accusations of sexual harassment by another attendee and is threatening to “take matters

into own hands”

An attendee is stumbling up Church Street, talking loudly and swinging a shirt around – none of the attendees in

the immediate vicinity seem bothered

An attendee comes up and advises you that an individual is “passed out” in the alleyway and won’t get up

Page 21: Pride Toronto Public Safety Volunteer Training

DOCUMENT!

Page 22: Pride Toronto Public Safety Volunteer Training

DOCUMENT EVERYTHING

Incident report sheets! As a Pride Toronto volunteer you are to NEVER intervene

in an emergency situation, you are to control the area and contact emergency services and dispatch.

After any incident your direct supervisor will have you fill out an incident sheet. Within this you will be required to give your account of any incidents and to provide information relevant to the event. You MUST give these back to your supervisor who will return them to the coordinators.

What would you do if…..

Scenario #1: As you are roaming you are approached by an individual who tells you of a festival attendee who

is passed out on the sidewalk with no apparent ID.

Scenario #2: You are walking past one of the privately-run stages. The paid security asks you to stand in and

check bags while they tend to some incident within the stage area.
