In a discussion held with the Corporation management members following the visit, Minister Demitu Hambissa discloses her office’s readiness in supporting the Corporation while implementing the plan of the sector of the second GTP.

The Minister stated that the sugar development sector demands huge investment and hence it seeks the necessary support and attention from the Government.

According to the Minster, Ministry of Government Development Agencies works to create harmonious implementation of capacity

building jobs at the Corporation level.

A monthly forum of stake holders of the Corporation which enhances its performances and gives solutions to encountering problems is going to be operational, the Minister further stated.

She urged the Corporation to strive its best in carrying out its responsibility and to start solving problems using its own capacity.

Speaking on the occasion Former Director General of Sugar Corporation, Ambassador Shiferaw Jarsso

and other senior management members of the Corporation briefed the points of concern of the Corporation on which the Ministry of Government Development Agencies shall focus on.

Among the points of concern raised are the need for capacity building, enhancing the capacity of the management and officers of the Corporation in strategically tackling problems they face and also for the betterment of the supply system and contract administration the Corporation has recognized as its main setbacks.

Among recruited more than 28% are women and members of the local community are benefiting in different ways since the inception of the project.

Deputy General Manager of Human Resource Division of the Project, Ato Henok Belete, confirming more job opportunities to be created in the future, disclosed the strong bond prevailed between the community and the project due the wide job opportunities created.

The goal of the move to bring about good governance; the main activities to be carried out at the forum made ready for it; detailed direction of performance and problems of good governance singled out in sugar development sector were topics of discussion. Participants of the meeting have discussed the causes of good governance problems and their solutions.

Presiding the meeting Acting Director General of the Corporation, Ato Endawek Abetei states the impact of lack of regular similar forums in the Corporation which has exposed the Corporation to suffer from good governance problems. Problems of good governance have worsened as management members as well as employees have not fulfilled their duties properly, he further added.

According to Ato Endawek there was no transparency and accountability on each work unit of the Corporation and the cause of the problem is related to work and the staff ’s viewpoint. The opinions and complaints raised by the participants depict the prevailing situation of the Corporation clearly, he has also disclosed. Issues discussed during the meeting will be given priorities in identifying problems of good governance and thereby bring about their solutions by preparing action plan and deploying implementers, Ato Endawek further said.

The Acting General Manager lay emphasis on the need of conducting similar discussion forums regularly and solving good governance problems on time. He further noted the necessity of strengthening Legal, Audit, and Ethics work units of the Corporation which have great contribution in doing away with problems of good governance.

Solving problems of good governance requires greater commitment which is ensured through working hand in glove with the employees, he also said.

The good governance initiation forum is prepared based on suggestions collected from opinion boxes of the corporation, it was learnt.

Similar discussion forums are planned to be held with stake holders as well as members of management and employees of sugar factories and sugar development projects, Ato Endawek finally pointed out.

FACTORY GENDER OFFICE BENEFITING WOMEN

Fincha Sugar Factory Gender Office is benefiting women by organizing them in different sectors.

According to the Factory`s Gender Officer W/t Telile Dhugasa the gender team in collaboration with other

work units of the factory has made every effort to raise the participation of woman in the factory to 31%. The effort will continue in the future, Telile further said.

Organizing and giving capacity building training programs to women around the factory continues and 32 women and eight male members are trained so far. Among the trainees two women are trained as loader operators.

The Office discloses that it is also working to benefit house wives on health extension

programs conducting door to door implementation of kaizen and thereby to enable them benefit more.

“Had there been legal framework at the Corporation level women participation would have raised more” W/t Telile finally said, calling on the Corporation to institute the legal framework soon.

The Office in collaboration with HIV/AIDS Secretariat has bought exercise books and other school materials to 281 orphans in the 2015-2016 academic year.

ARJO DIDIESSA SUGAR FACTORY HAS CONSTRUCTED VENDING CENTERS TO THE COMMUNITY

Arjo Didiessa Sugar Factory has constructed small Vending Centers and handed them over to members of the community working in front of the factory.

W/ro Likie Befikadu, one among those who are organized in associations and run a restaurant, says she is very happy of the Vending Centers

constructed by the factory. According to her, she supports herself and her family by the income generated from her business. She further added that the factory is benefitting the local community. She is very much hopeful of the factory in intensifying projects of wide job opportunities which benefit the local community more in the

future.

Another beneficiary W/t Zemed Ademe on her part, recalling the inconvenient rented room she was working in, said the business centers constructed by Arjo Didiessa Sugar Factory has now lifted up her passion of the business she is running.

Wolkayit Sugar Development Project is assisting the people living in drought affected areas of Tigray Regional State. The project has given bundles of hay and Sorghum by-product for their domestic animals feed.

Resettlement Coordinator of the region, Ato Tsegay Fitwi said that the project

harvested and delivered the by-product of sorghum from 320 hectares of land deploying about 400 labourers. The Project has, therefore, given 10,000 and 1,200 bundles of hay and sorghum by-product respectively.

Public Organization Division of the Project, Ato Haile Gebre-Medhin on his part said

Wolkayit Sugar Development Project is playing its own role in alleviating the problems of drought affected areas due to el nino and la lina.

On a related development Wonji Shewa, Metahara,Tendaho and Kessem Sugar Factories have also assisted molasus, bagaz and water for drought affeicted areas in their surroundings.

PREPARATORY SCHOOL BEGINS WORK AT FINCHA SUGAR FACTORY

FINCHA SUGAR FACTORY SAVES MORE THAN 50 MILLION BIRR

Implementing Kaizen, Fincha Sugar Factory saves more than 50 million Birr mending factory cane carts.

The mending of 48 cane carts carried out at the factory garage has helped to save large amount

of money which otherwise would have been spent to buy new carts at a cost of more than one million birr each. According to the Garage Supervisor, Ato Lellisa Firdisa the mending work was done by Kaizen implementing team members` self motivation.

A new preparatory school named Fincha-Agemsa Preparatory School which is constructed to serve factory workers, their families as well as the local community begins work at the venue of Fincha Sugar Factory.

The preparatory school constructed at the cost of 12 Million Birr initial capital is fully funded by the Factory.

Students around used to travel for more than 50 kilometers to be enrolled in preparatory

schools. About 200 students have currently joined the preparatory school.

The factory is undertaking various development activities which are benefiting the local community.

METEHARA SUGAR FACTORY TO ENTER IMPLEMENTATION OF SECOND PHASE KAIZEN

Metehara Sugar Factory has held discussion with Senior Officials of Ethiopian Kaizen Institute on applying the second phase of Kaizen.

While visiting the factory last October, the Institute`s senior officials disclosed the Institute’s commitment in supporting the Factory on the implementation of the second phase of Kaizen.

During their visit, Metehara Sugar Factory`s Kaizen and Change Management Team has briefed the visiting officials the commendable

results registered in the past two years applying the science.

“On a training program which is going to be prepared for Kaizen implementing senior staffs of various institutions, the Institute will give the opportunity to the Factory to take part” deputy director Ato Tinfu Muche said.

Stating the exemplary job of the Factory in sharing its Kaizen implementation experience on site, Ato Tinfu noted the need of accessibility of its experience via media.

Members of management and employees of Sugar Corporation celebrated the 10th Nations, Nationalities and People`s Day with the motto “Nations, Nationalities and People`s participation for greater development and transformation!” on December15, 2015 at the head office of the Corporation. Anti-AIDS and Anti-Sexual Violence Days are also celebrated together with it. Speaking on the occasion former Sugar Corporation Director General at the Rank of Minister, Ambassador Shiferaw Jarso said the F.D.R.E constitution is the manifestation of Ethiopia`s nations, nationalities and people equality and as the cornerstone of transformation, it participates all the people ensuring distribution of wealth with equity.

The Constitution, facilitating the nation’s transformation journey of the previous years, has created conducive environment to register a two-digit economic development, he further added. According to him the sugar development sector is a mega project that the government is working on giving due attention thereby ensure the benefit of the society by the economic growth the sector is believed to bring with very wide job opportunities. Fulfilling local sugar consumption; the government has planned to export sugar to the international market, he further noted. With regard to Anti-HIV and Anti Sexual Violence days, he calls on staffs of the Corporation to keep up efforts in preventing the pandemic as well as violence against women. The ambassador commended the staffs endeavor in assisting

orphans whose parents have passed away because of the pandemic. On the occasion, Ato Abraham Demesse Advisor to the Director General presented a paper entitled “F.D.R.E Constitution and Building One Political-Economy” on which hot discussion was held. Gender as well as Health Directorates have also delivered their respective messages regarding Anti Sexual Violence and Anti HIV/AIDS days.

In a related development the 10th Nations, Nationalities and People`s Day as well as the Anti HIV/AIDS and Anti Sexual Violence Days are celebrated in all sugar factories and sugar development projects with various activities.

FINCHA SUGAR FACTORY GRADUATES PROPERTY AND SECURITY GUARDS

Fincha Sugar Factory in collaboration with Oromiya Police College has trained and graduated 577 Security Officers in two rounds in Property and Security Management at Agemsa Elementary School.

At the graduation ceremony held on October 3, 2015 Factory General Manager Ato Dula Mekonnen urged the graduates, using the skills they acquire from the training, to play their own role to the fulfillment of the plan set by the factory.

He also forwarded his gratitude to Oromiya Police College in welcoming the training request of the Factory and delivering the training program at the venue of the factory.

Deputy Director of Oromiya Police College - Assistant Commissioner Teressa Kassa on the occasion said creating crime free society is vital in implementing good governance, sustainable development and building democratic system to a better stage.

He added that the college has assigned 12 police science teachers, and 16 field military science trainers to train the aforementioned trainees of the factory. The training program focuses on ethics of security workers, government policy and strategy, security maintenance of government institutions, crime protection and inspection, weapon handling and usage as well as other related military skills.

The training graduates on their part said, using the knowledge and skill they acquire, they are ready to serve the sugar factory with commitment, loyalty and good ethics.

On his closing remark Representative of the Administration of Horro Guduru Wellega Zone, Ato Birhanu Tilahun on his part confirmed the readiness of the Zone in maintaining the security of the factory.

ANTI GENDER VIOLENCE MARCH HELDAnti gender violence march on foot was held on December 7, 2015.

Employees from the Head Office of Sugar Corporation as well as staffs of Liaison Offices of sugar factories here in the capital have taken part on the march held from the Head Office to Hamlin Fistula Hospital under a motto “Let Us Stop Violence Against Women through Male Partnership”.

Briefings on fistula and gender violence was given to participants of the march which according to them broadens their understanding of the issues.Participants of the march finally handed over three quintals of sugar to the hospital.
