EEP S&EA: Why is the Energy and Environment

Partnership in Southern and East Africa Special?

EEP: a Challenge Fund that builds on a well-established portfolio, a unique donor

pool, solid in-country buy-in and firm coordination:

• EEP II (2013-2017): already 100+ projects and 1000+ applications

• Projects: RE & EE mix consists of approximately 60% private sector and 40%

organisations such as NGOs, governmental organisations, universities, community

based organisations

• Funders: MFA / Finland (main donor), DFID / UK & ADA / AT: vast experience for

leveraging nearby 60 M€ EEP S&EA funding – and building on several other EEP

‘sister’ programs as well.

• EEP II Countries: Botswana, Burundi, Kenya, Lesotho, Mozambique, Namibia,

Rwanda, Seychelles, South Africa, Swaziland, Tanzania, Uganda and Zambia

• Management and implementation: KPMG ECO (EEP Coordination Office, Pretoria)

EEP S&EA Phase II

EEP Phase II: 2013-2017

EEP aims to reduce poverty by promoting inclusive and

job-creating green economy and by improving energy

security in the Southern and East Africa regions while

mitigating global climate change. The key target outcomes

are:

• Inclusive innovation and Regional RE and EE market

creation

– Window 1 – Innovation: Projects at an early stage of

implementation, including feasibility studies, demonstrations

and small pilot projects

– Window 2 - Market Creation: Projects that are near-

commercial mainly private sector projects, with a greater

grant size and leverage expectations

• Business development support

• Policy impact, knowledge production and regional

network
