Splitting into teams
Group vs. team
Group- Several people with common objectives,
usually together for the satisfaction of affective needs.
Team- Teams are people with common objectives
acting together to strive the accomplishment of specific goals.
Why Teams?
• When several people use their skills and knowledge together, the result should be a better project.
• People working together can sustain the enthusiasm and lend supportneeded to complete the project.
Team Cohesion• Cohesion is the force by which the
molecules of a substance are held together.
“The way a team plays as a whole determines its success. You may have the greatest bunch of individual stars in the world, but if they don’t play together, the club won’t be worth a dime.” (Babe Ruth)
Seven Key Elements - Cone of Cohesion
Goals and Objectives
• Clarify the team dreams into team goals• Define the mission and vision statement• Obtain commitment of the team members to
achieve the goals and objectives• Ensure task connects to needs and meaningful
outcomes (perceived value)
Right Resources
• Get the “right resources”, not necessarily the “best”
• Clarify roles and responsibilities• Individual attitude versus
cohesiveness with the team• Mutual respect and trust• Diversity
Communications
• Team meetings (frequent and consistent)
• Provide feedback onperformance
• Use of “we and our” versus “I and me”
Game Plan
• Methodologies, Project Plans, Team Charter
• Defines how the project will be managed and executed
• Provides the team with a plan for achieving the established goals andobjectives
• Establishes continuity/consistency in practices
Training
• COACH: Training specific to the organization and the game plan
• Career path, supported by competency model and training
• Encourage employeesto not just be participants,but also be instructors
Rewards
• Challenging project• Gaining new experience• Awards/trophies• Celebrate the victories

Leadership
• Lead by example• Set the initial team goals• Accept individual differences in team
members• Praise team cooperation regardless

Stage 1:FORMING
• Team Building –Define team–Determine

Stage 2:STORMING
During the Storming stage team members:– realize that the task is more difficult
than they imagined;–have fluctuations in attitude about
chances of success; –may be resistant to the task;–have poor collaboration.
NegotiatingConflict
• Separate problem issues from people issues.
• Clarify the core issues.• Listen carefully to each person’s
point of view.• Check understanding by restating
the core issues.
Stage 3Stage 3NormingNorming
• During this stage members accept:– their team;– team rules and procedures;– their roles in the team; and,– the individuality of fellow members.
• Team members realize that they are not going to crash-and-burn and start helping each other.
Behaviors in the norming stage
• Competitive relationships become more cooperative.
• There is a willingness to confront issues and solve problems.• Teams develop the ability to express
criticism constructively.• There is a sense of team spirit.
Stage 4Performing
Team members have:– gained insight into personal and team
processes;– a better understanding of each other’s
strengths and weaknesses;– gained the ability to prevent or work through
group conflict and resolve differences;– developed a close attachment to
the team.
