The Global Fund Programme in Myanmar

Since the Global Fund returned to Myanmar in 2009, UNOPS was named as one of two Principal Recipients of Global Fund grants, together with Save the Children. These grants total $105 million over two years (2011-2012), allowing access to prevention, care and treatment for HIV/AIDS, tuberculosis and malaria to those most in need. As a Principal Recipient, UNOPS manages US $60.56 million of this pool, with the mandate to coordinate and oversee implementation of the grants. This has enabled the distribution of 4.3 million condoms free of charge to the most at-risk populations and the provision of anti-retroviral therapy to 19,050 people with advanced HIV infection. The grants have also enabled the provision of anti-TB treatment to 268,382 new TB patients and anti-malaria treatment to more than one million patients, as well as the distribution of more than 1.2 million insecticide-treated bed nets free of charge to people at risk.

In its role as a Principal Recipient, UNOPS is responsible for delivering the targets set out in the grant agreement, in collaboration with selected Sub-Recipients from the National Programmes, international and local non-governmental organizations and United Nations agencies. This arrangement comes under the oversight of the Myanmar Country Coordinating Mechanism, which comprises a partnership of local stakeholders from NGOs, multilateral and bilateral agencies, the public and private sector and people living with, or affected by, the diseases. This enables effective and target-based aid delivery to those most in need.
