MRI
Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) is a type of medical imaging that physicians use to help diagnose and manage many health conditions.
• MRI scanners use magnetic fields, radio waves and a computer to produce detailed images of the internal body structures. MRI scans are painless and very safe.
• Some people who have an upcoming MRI may have some extent of anxiety about the exam. This could be based on the pending outcome and diagnosis, or simply the 30 minute procedure itself.
• There are ways that patients can prepare to eliminate some of the uncertainty and have a better experience!
1. Don’t Make Assumptions
Don’t assume that your experience will be similar to MRI exams you may have had in the past; especially if your last MRI was several years ago. • MRI technology advances
significantly from year to year, especially in features which improve the patient experience.
• Exam times are shorter, lasting typically 30 minutes or less on a high-field scanner.
• Open design; the new scanners have a wider opening and are shorter in length, allowing most of your body to be uncovered and less confined.
• Noise is reduced or minimized by audio options.
2. Follow Instructions on Medications
Don’t skip any pain control medication unless instructed to do so. • Most MRI exams allow you
to go about your daily activities without restriction. • We want you to be
comfortable during your procedure.
• If you have been taking ibuprofen or any pain control prescriptions for your condition, please continue doing so.
• Please avoid any pain or therapy patches, as they may cause burns.
3. Understand Clothing & Jewelry Restrictions
No metal is allowed in the MRI room, so be prepared to: • Remove all jewelry prior to your
test. The MRI magnet is always on, and metallic jewelry will be pulled to the magnet if left on.
• Be prepared to change your clothes regardless of what you are wearing. Again, anything metal will be attracted to the magnet, even small things like eyelets or zippers. To reduce any issues, be prepared to change for the smoothest experience.
4. Answer Screening Questions Truthfully
During the scheduling process, a series of screening questions will be asked of you. • These questions are designed
to ensure your safety and to obtain medical information necessary to complete the most informative exam for your physician.
• Be sure to have any prior surgical or implant information available when you call. • This will help to
expedite the time you spend on the call.
5. Relax & Listen to the Music
• Most facilities have the ability to play music and have a variety of music choices available to you. • This can help to keep you
relaxed while the test is administered.
• Ask your technologist about this option if it’s not offered to you.
