Attitude Towards Aging
Many of our attitudes are negative towards growing and would
Ageism is the fear of being old. It falls into the categories like racism and sexism.
Young people tend to believe that old people suffer from poor health, live in poverty, and are victims of crime
Changes in health
Physical strength decline about 1percenta year through adulthood
Young and old, are subject to decrease 40 percent of elderly people have one
chronic disease Four most common chronic disease are
heart disease, hypertension, diabetes, and arthritis
Changes in life situation
Reduce responsibility 7 out of 10 women are alone Depression is common in older adults.
Older people suffer from challenges such as ageing and losing spouses
Changes in sexual activity
Display of affection are often considered silly, improper, or even morally wrong
People over 65 still are interested in sex If Sexual activity is done in the past, its
most certain it will continue through older age
Adjusting to old age
When older people are unable to maintain what they value most- good health, visits from family friends, privacy, work activities, and recognition in the community- the quality of their lives suffers dramatically with their self image.
The loss of control is usually gradual and may involve both physical (becoming sick) or external changes (nursing home).
Changes in Mental FunctioningAs people age, their mental functions
change, although there is much less decline intelligence and memory than people think.
