Protecting Your Hearing

Most of us use earpieces with MP3 players to listen to music.

It is recognised that listening to music at high levels for long periods of time can permanently damage hearing

There are high profile campaigns and articles to make us aware of the dangers:• RNID – Don’t lose the Music• Noise Abatement Society – Love Your Ears• Deafness Research• Daily Telegraph, Daily Mail, Sunday Mail etc

Work and Play

That may be OK in our private lives, but what about those who use earpieces at

work?

Page 4: AdaptEar

A dangerous combination

Most earpieces are very sensitive as they are designed to work with low out-put sources such as MP3 players or mobile phones.

Private Mobile Radios (PMR) or Walkie Talkies are high out-put sources which are designed to work with matched headphones.

A dangerous combination

Using earpieces with a PMR or walkie talkie is potentially very damaging to hearing unless limiters or AdaptEar® are used.

Earpieces can’t handle the power and the sound is rapidly distorted.

Some earpieces used with PMRs can produce sound levels that will cause instant permanent hearing damage.

Page 7: AdaptEar

A dangerous combination

Not only is the combination potentially dangerous the volume level is difficult to control.

Small increases in volume control on the PMR create big increases in level in the earpieces.

Page 8: AdaptEar

Safety

If earpieces are used with a PMR or similar high power source AdaptEar®

should be used

Page 9: AdaptEar

Using AdaptEar®

Before use, AdaptEar® sensitivity should be set to match the earpieces performance

The MiniDIN plug is inserted into the MiniDIN socket on AdaptEar®

The 3.5 mm jack plugs into the 3.5 mm listen only socket on the PMR Earpieces are plugged into the “Phones” socket of the AdaptEar®

The user is now protected and ready to go

AdaptEar®

The increase in volume in the ear becomes proportional to the volume control on the PMR

Acoustic shock and high volumes are prevented

The more damaging highly compressed signals are limited sooner than the less damaging human voice

Indicates that the safe limit is being reached and user is being protected

Alerts user to turn down the volume
