PLOS ONE 2015;1-13. | DOI:10.1371/journal.pone.0138075 PELARGONIUMPelargonium species are indigenous to areas of Southern Africa and are highly valued by traditional healers for their curative properties 1In South Africa, polyphenol-rich herbal preparations are made up from roots of Pelargonium sidoides - traditionally used to treat respiratory and gastrointestinal infections, dysmenorrhea, and hepatic disorders 1Inspired by the healing of his tuberculosis, Charles Henry Stevens introduced this phytomedical drug to England already in 1897 1

More than seven decades later, a special ethanolic extract of Pelargonium sidoides roots, EPs 7630, was finally developed 1This extract is approved today for the therapeutic use in patients with acute bronchitis 1In addition, it was shown to be effective in clinical trials with patients suffering from tonsillopharyngitis, rhinosinusitis, common cold or COPD 1PELARGONIUM

BACK TO PELARGONIUM

PELARGONIUMPelargonium has been shown to have a three-way effect:The Pelargonium Sidoides extract prevents bacteria from attaching to cells in mucous membranes. 1Pelargonium sidoides extracts inhibit the adherence of bacteria such as Streptococcus pyogenes and Helicobacter pylori to epithelial cells in vitro.

Furthermore, ciliated cells isolated from the nasal epithelium enhanced their ciliary beat frequency in the presence of these extracts, which should allow a better removal of excess mucous and bacteria.1. Witte K, Koch E, Volk H-D, Wolk K, Sabat R. The Pelargonium sidoides Extract EPs 7630 Drives the Innate Immune Defense by Activating Selected MAP Kinase Pathways in Human Monocytes. PELARGONIUMPelargonium has been shown to have a three-way effect:Similarly, Pelargonium Sidoides prevents viruses from attaching to the mucous membrane cells and stimulates the bodys immune system in such a way that both bacteria and viruses are prevented from multiplying. 1In vitro, the extracts show efficacy against cellular infections with influenza virus, HSV, EMCV, RSV, coronavirus, parainfluenza virus, and coxsackie virus, and this appears to be mainly mediated indirectly by inhibition of virus attachment and spreading.1. Witte K, Koch E, Volk H-D, Wolk K, Sabat R. The Pelargonium sidoides Extract EPs 7630 Drives the Innate Immune Defense by Activating Selected MAP Kinase Pathways in Human Monocytes. BACK TO PELARGONIUM

PELARGONIUMPelargonium has been shown to have a three-way effect:The extract acts as an expectorant, allowing the body to expel contaminated mucous, making conditions less suitable for the multiplication of the bacteria and viruses can only find animal data. The three-way effect attacks the acute infection at its root, the stabilisation of the immune system prevents a re-infection and the vicious circle of infection, a short recovery phase and new infection is broken.

EUCALYPTUSCLINICAL BACKGROUND

Eucalyptus oil (EO) has antibacterial, antiviral, and antifungal components and a long history of use against the effects of colds, influenza, other respiratory infections, rhinitis, and sinusitis. 1

Although most of the plants are native to Australia and Tasmania, they have been successfully introduced worldwide and are cultivated in many other countries. 3

The genus Eucalyptus belongs to the Myrtaceae family, which comprises approximately 130 genera and 4,000 species. 2

More than 300 species of Eucalyptus contain volatile oils in their leaves. 2

1.Sadlon AE, Lamson DW. Immune-Modifying and Antimicrobial Effects of Eucalyptus Oil and Simple Inhalation Devices. Alternative Medicine Review 2010;15(1):33-47.EUCALYPTUSEucalyptus oil (EO) and its major component, 1,8-cineole, have antimicrobial effects against many bacteria, including: 1Mycobacterium tuberculosis Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA)VirusesAnd Fungi (including Candida)

Surprisingly for an antimicrobial substance, there are also immune-stimulatory, anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, analgesic, and spasmolytic effects 1

More recently, the biochemical details behind these effects have been clarified 1

CASE STUDYCombining Eucalyptus Oil with Pelargonium (Sidoides or Reniforme)

SUMMARYEnhanced pharmacological effect by producing synergy

EXPLANATIONEucalyptus oil and Pelargonium Sidoides/Reniforme extract, both have anti-viral, anti-bacterial and anti-fungal properties, but act on different aerobic and anti-aerobic organisms, and on a different pharmacological basis (direct and indirect). 1,2,3

The vasodilation effect of Eucalyptus is providing air and oxygen to blocked sinus areas and is preventing anaerobic bacterial effect just with this action alone.SUMMARY OF THE HERB FORMULATION

CASE STUDYEnhancing the absorption and effect on the body of the herb formulation of Pelargonium Sidoides / Reniforme and/or Eucalyptus, by mouth or nasal passage, using a medical device (battery-powered vaporiser, Electrical vaporiser or nebuliser/pump)

SUMMARYEnhanced pharmacokinetic effect by producing a formulation of the herb Pelargonium Sidoides/Reniforme, with/or without Eucalyptus, for inhalation purposes

EXPLANATIONEucalyptus oil is well absorbed by inhalation and has a direct vasodilation effect (within less than 120 seconds of inhalation, results not published), and therefore also has a faster onset effect on aerobic infections in the upper nasal and respiratory areas.

Pelargonium Sidoides / Reniforme has a low bioavailability (2%-6%) and will have an enhanced by inhalation, to provide a quicker pharmacological effect.

Both pharmacological active components are now provided to the site of infections at an enhanced rate and at higher effective concentrations, than oral administration.SUMMARY OF THE HERB FORMULATION

Why VapeBACK TO VAPE

VAPEWhat are the future trends for Vape/Vaping

There is growing evidence that Essential Oils (EOs) in vapour phase are effective antimicrobial systems and that they do have advantages over the use of EOs in liquid phase such as an increase in antibacterial activity and use at lower concentrations. 1
