EPIDEMIOLOGICAL SITUATION IN BULGARIA –
HPAI AI in poultry has never been confirmed in Bulgaria
until 31 Jan 2006:
• 31 Jan 2006 – on Danube river coast near the
town of Vidin a swan showing clinical
symptoms was reported. AI H5 was isolated
at the National Reference Laboratory AI in
Sofia. The isolate was sent to EURL and on
10 Feb 2006 the isolate was confirmed as
influenza type A H5N1;
• 09 Feb 2006 - samples taken from dead
swans found in the lake of Durankulak,
Dobrich region were confirmed as H5;
• 09 Feb 2006 - H5N1 was isolated from a
dead swan found in the dam Tzonevo, Varna
region;
• 11 Feb 2006 - HPAI H5 was confirmed in
dead swan found on the beach of Kraimorie,
Burgas region;
• 01 April 2010 – HPAI H5N1 was confirmed in
a buzzard (Buteo buteo) in Varna region

HIGHLY PATHOGENIC AVIAN INFLUENZA IN 2015
HPAI H5N1 in dalmatian pelican (Pelecanus crispus):
-22 Jan 2015 – dalmatian pelican found dead in “Poda” nature
reserve, Burgas region
-26 Jan 2015 – HPAI H5N1 laboratory confirmed by PCR
-03 Feb 2015 – HPAI H5N1 confirmed in a rock dove and black
headed gull
-measures under Commission Decision (ЕC) 2006/563 enforced.
HPAI H5N1 in poultry:
-30 Jan 2015 – high mortality in poultry in backyard holding in Konstantinovo
village, Burgas region, HPAI H5N1 laboratory confirmed by RT-PCR
-02 Feb 2015 all the birds in Konstantinovo village were culled and disposed
-03 Feb 2015 – cleaning and disinfection of all the holdings
• protection and surveillance zone
• ban of movements of birds in the
zones, clinical examinations
• culling and disposal of birds in
Konstantinovo
• cleaning and disinfection
• ban of markets and exhibitions on
the territory of the whole country
• ban of hunting of wild birds
• surveillance and biosecurity
measures enforcement on the
territory of the country
Measures regarding HPAI outbreak in Burgas
region:
Zones А and B, established with
Commission Decision (EC) 2006/415
HPAI H5N1 „Srebarna“ nature resurve, Silistra
region:
-24.03.2015, suspicion – high mortality in
dalmatian pelicans – 21 found dead;
-26.03.2015 – lab confirmation of HPAI H5N1;
