What is it?

• Cardiovascular disease (or heart disease) is an abnormal function (disease) of the heart or blood vessels.

Causes

• Cardiovascular disease is caused when the arteries are blocked by a buildup of fatty plagues.

• Over time, the arteries begin to thicken and stiffen, which causes blood flow to your organs to restrict. If this happens, it can cause an increase in risk for heart attack, heart failure, sudden death, stroke and cardiac rhythm problems, which can result in decreased quality of life and decreased life expectancy.

Treatments

• Treatments for cardiovascular disease include a lifestyle change, medication, or medical procedures.

• A common procedure to treat cardiovascular disease is through surgery.

• The surgery is performed by placing a catheter in an artery in your arm or groin and threading a small balloon to your blocked artery and inflating it to reopen the artery.

Preventions

Some ways to prevent cardiovascular disease include:• quit smoking• exercising regularly to maintain your weight• eating healthy• schedule health screenings• managing stress• getting enough sleep
