Three Types of Commonly Abused Prescription Drugs

The prescription drugs most commonly associated with drug abuse and addiction fall into three categories:

� Opioid & Opiate Painkillers � Stimulants � Benzodiazepines

Opioids and opiates are analgesics, or “pain killers”. They reduce the central nervous system’s response to pain. Opiates and Opioids are commonly prescribed for treating chronic and acute pain, including chronic pain from diseases such as fibromyalgia, severe arthritis, or complications arising from cancer treatment. Lower dose opiates and opiates (such as Percocet) are commonly prescribed for dental pain, and pain from sports injuries.

Prescription stimulants are commonly used to treat youth and adults for ADHD (Attention Deficit & Hyperactivity Disorder), ADD (Attention Deficit Disorder), Fatigue, Lethargy and specific disorders such as narcolepsy. These amphetamine and methylphenidate drugs cause increased mental focus without apparent effort, making them helpful for treating attention disorders. Improper dosing can cause dopamine chemical reward cycles in the brain, which leads to powerful addictions. Stimulant addiction is accompanied by the same severe withdrawal sickness that causes drug abuse to continue despite severe negative consequences.

Benzodiazepines are often prescribed for anxiety, depression sleep deprivation or panic attacks. These are is CNS (central nervous system) suppressants, and can be especially dangerous when mixed with alcohol or other drugs. Opiate / Opioid addiction often causes side effects that addicts self-managed with benzodiazepines. This can lead to more complicated, more difficult to treat drug addiction disorders.

Popular Opioid Painkillers Opioid pain killers are synthetic opiates, chemically similar to heroin. Prescription pain killers are know to be a “gateway” to heroin addiction. A 2014 news report noted that 80% of heroin addicts had previously used painkillers.
