Cord tissue refers to the tissue of the umbilical cord. Until recently, cord tissue was often discarded after birth, but new research has shown that cord tissue has the potential for treating many diseases. Cord tissue contains
a specific kind of stem cell, called mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs). Unlike the
stem cells that are collected from cord blood, MSCs collected from cord tissue are multipotent,
which means that they have the capacity to differentiate into many different types of cells, including cartilage cells (chondrocytes), bone cells (osteoblasts), and fat cells (adipocytes). This characteristic of MSCs means that they could potentially be used to treat a wide range of diseases.
Though no conditions have been treated using mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs), there are over 40 clinical trials under way. These clinical trials are exploring the possibility of using cord tissue for:
• Cartilage repair• Diabetes• Heart disease• Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV)• Liver disease• Stroke• Serious wounds• Spinal cord injury
The stem cells in cord blood and cord tissue function differently. Cord blood contains hematopoietic stem cells (HSCs), which form the blood-related cells in the body, such as white blood cells, red blood cells, and platelets. There are over 80 diseases that have been treated using HSCs and almost 200 clinical trials are currently under way. Cord tissue contains stem cells known as mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs), which develop into structural and connective tissue. There are currently over 40 clinical trials under way investigating the potential therapeutic applications of MSCs from cord tissue.

Cord blood banking, cord tissue banking, or placenta tissue banking does not guarantee that the saved cells will be applicable for every situation. Ultimate use will be determined by a physician. Please note: Americord Registry's activities are limited to collection of umbilical cord tissue from autogeneic donors. Americord Registry's possession of a New York State license for such collection does not indicate approval or endorsement of possible future uses or future suitability of cells derived from umbilical cord tissue.
The placenta is a stem cell rich tissue that protects the developing fetus in the womb.
Stem cells from placenta tissue are “immune-privileged,” meaning they are unlikely to be rejected by human immune systems because they would never be recognized as a foreign body. Cord blood,
which is found in the umbilical cord, contains hematopoietic stem cells (HSCs);
umbilical cord tissue contains mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs). Placenta tissue contains both HSCs and MSCs. The placenta also contains pluripotent stem cells, which are able to differentiate into almost any cell within the body. Pluripotent stem cells are the subject of medical research because of their ability to generate healthy cells that may replace diseased or damaged cells.
Americord is registered with the FDA and our laboratory is CLIA-certified, accredited by the AABB, and complies with all federal and state guidelines. We use a medical courier to expedite delivery of your baby’s cord blood to our lab.
Americord collects, processes, and stores newborn stem cells from umbilical cord blood, cord tissue, and placenta tissue for future medical or therapeutic use, including the treatment of more than 80 diseases such as sickle cell anemia and leukemia. Founded in 2008, Americord operates in all 50 states. Americord is headquartered in New York, NY.
Pluripotent Stem CellsPlacenta tissue has been shown to be a rich source of pluripotent stem cells, or cells that have the potential to differentiate into any cell in the body. This encompasses the cells that multipotent stem cells can differentiate into, but the differentiation potential of pluripotent cells is extended to include cells of the brain, lung, and liver. Pluripotent stem cells can be harvested and used to regenerate virtually any cell. Because of this, pluripotent stem cells from placenta tissue are a promising candidate to treat many neurological, respiratory, and metabolic disorders.
Hematopoietic Stem CellsLike cord blood, the tissue of the placenta is a rich source of hematopoietic stem cells (HSCs). HSCs are cells that differentiate into blood-borne cells like red blood cells, white blood cells, and platelets. Just like those derived from bone marrow and cord blood, HSCs from the placenta can be used to treat over 80 diseases, including genetic disorders and cancers.
Mesenchymal Stem CellsPlacenta tissue is also an abundant source of mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs). Unlike HSCs, MSCs are multipotent, which means that they can differentiate into a broader range of cells, including cartilage cells, bone cells, and fat cells. The potential therapeutic application of MSCs to treat disease is currently the topic of many research studies, with over 40 clinical trials under way.
