Current Experiments
What with all the setting up of the site here at Cankerboy
headquarters, I haven’t had a chance to fill people in on the current tests going on in the laboratory. (The laboratory
being my mouth.)
Treatment products:
Canker-Rid from Durham’s Bee Farm
I wrote a while back about the promise of a bee product called
propolis, which is made from pollen and tree sap flows, and which has been known to have antiseptic properties and can
even help regulate the immune system. Well, it turns out
As a non-smoker, I had the opinion that it was probably a good thing.
“Good for them,” said the judgmental gnome inside my head, “People don’t
need to be smoking anyway. It’s a horrible lifestyle choice and probably
running up my insurance costs.”
Durham’s Bee Farm in Mississippi makes a canker sore
remedy from this very substance that promises to get rid of your canker sores quickly and relieve the pain. They even offer a money-back guarantee!
I just recently purchased this product and started using it on a new spot that came up on the tip of my tongue (damn sunflower
seeds) and so far so good. I’ll give a full review later, but the sore I
have right now seems to be trying to go away pretty quickly.
It never got very big and appears to be closing up slowly after only a few days. Now, I’m skeptical of this because this is also taking place during what I would normally consider to be
my off cycle – it literally popped up right on
the heels of another ulcer healing, and was obviously due to heavy
sunflower seed consumption – so it may be fading quickly because conditions aren’t optimal to start
up right now anyway.
I’ll give it a go on my next one that’s an on-cycle ulcer and see if I
get the same results.
The short version:
The good: It coats and protects the ulcer really well.
The bad: Not that easy to apply. Also stings like you’re actually putting a bee in your
mouth.
Current Supplements:
I’m testing out Lysine at 2000 mg a day. I tried Lysine once before and wasn’t impressed with the results, but I wasn’t
tracking my ulcers at the time, so I’m giving it another try.
Can’t tell any difference right now, but the thing about supplements is they often take a long time to take effect. So I’m going to ride it out
and see what happens.
I’m having a bit of an internal debate about my supplements.
Truth be told, I’m a bit of a supplement fool these days. I take a lot of them and my wife burns a lot of calories rolling
her eyes at me. I’ve been taking the PAGG stack from
The Four Hour Body by Tim Ferris, which consists of
Policosanol, Alpha-Lipoic Acid, Garlic, and Green Tea.
It’s something of a weight-loss/metabolism booster. On top of that, I take Magnesium
to help ward off future kidney stones (I had one and that was
plenty for me), and now on top of all that I take the Lysine.
I’ve debated cutting out all the other supplements so I can see how the lysine works by itself, but I’ve decided to keep taking
them and just make sure I’m consistently taking them with
whichever canker sore supplement I try.
At least it would be the same across the board, and maybe I’ll even get some abs out of it. (I
hear someone laughing as I type this…)
Toothpaste:
I kicked the Sodium Lauryl Sulphate out of my toothpaste and have been using Biotine for a little over a month now. I have to say, I
haven’t seen the slightest bit of difference in the frequency,
severity, size, or pain of the sores since I started using it.
This is the second type of natural toothpaste I’ve used
(the other one being from Tom’s) and neither of them
have made much difference to me. I’m sure there are some people that have issues with
SLS toothpastes, but so far for me it’s a wash.
I’m going to keep using it and try some other brands as well, but I
honestly, I miss my old toothpaste. This stuff just feels like I’m brushing my teeth with
baking soda.
Probably because I’m basically brushing my teeth with baking
soda.
Full results and reviews to come.
