WHAT IS E-LEARNING?

E-learning is also called

Web-based learning,

Online learning,

Distributed learning, or

Internet-based learning.

WHAT IS E-LEARNING?

e-Learning is the use of technology and services to deliver a curricula and, ultimately, to facilitate learning.

Traditional and E-learning

Traditional Classrooms E-Learning

Classroom • Physical – limited size • Synchronous

• Unlimited • Anytime, anywhere

Content

• PowerPoint/ transparency etc.• Textbooks/library • Video • Collaboration

• Multimedia / simulation • Digital library • On demand • Syn. & Asyn. Communication

Personalization • One way learning path Pace decided by the teacher

• Learning path and pace determined by learner

WHY E-LEARNING?E-LEARNING SERVICES CAN SUPPORT Shortage of trained faculty and increase in number of medical students and colleges in India.

Deteriorating standards in Medical education ???

Online resources can reach out across time and space barriers.

WHY MEDICAL TEACHERS NEED E-RESOURCES • e-learning refers to the use of Internet

technologies to deliver a broad array of solutions that enhance knowledge and performance

• e-learning can be used by medical educators to improve the efficiency and effectiveness of educational interventions in the face of the social, scientific, and pedagogical challenges.

• It has gained popularity in the past decade; however, its use is highly variable among medical colleges and appears to be more common in basic science courses than in clinical practice

MODES OF E-LEARNING Two common e-learning modes: Distance learning and Computer-assisted instruction.

Distance learning uses information technologies to deliver instruction to learners who are at remote locations from a central site.

Computer-assisted instruction (also called computer-based learning and computer-based training) uses computers to aid in the delivery of stand-alone multimedia packages for learning and teaching.

These two modes are combined under e-learning as the Internet becomes the integrating technology.

BENEFIT OF E-LEARNING

Convenient –self-service (mix and match) –on-demand (anytime, anywhere) –private learning –self-paced –Flexibility: (modular package)

BENEFIT OF E-LEARNING

Cost-effective –Virtual learning environment –Share lessons among schools –Reduce material cost –Reduce travel/accommodation costs

Page 17: E learning for Medical faculty

BENEFIT OF E-LEARNING

Consistent –Central control of content –Same quality of content for all –Same quality of education for all

Page 18: E learning for Medical faculty

BENEFIT OF E-LEARNING

Media-rich –Easier to understand & more engagingRepeatable–As many times as you like Easier to monitor progress–less administrative work –can be more precise

E-LEARNING IS MORE INTERACTIVE

In an on-line multimedia learning

environment:

–Teaching & learning is ‘one-to-one’ (individual)

–More interactivity (in normal classroom, it varies

with the class size)

–Learner centered

–Learner monitoring & grading systems

WEB LEARNING ELIMINATES GEOGRAPHIC CONSTRAINS

The ability to harness the expertise and time of numerous educators has the potential to lead to an ever evolving knowledge base that can morph to meet the needs of the students.

By using web-based tools, we are no longer constrained to a given time or location to deliver information and interact with students on a given topic

Disadvantages of E-Learning

Resource limitation: learners need to have access to a computer as well as the Internet.

The learner need to have computer skills with programs such as word processing, Internet browsers, and e-mail.

Page 23: E learning for Medical faculty

Disadvantages of E-Learning

The students have to be highly motivated and responsible because all the work they do is on their own.

Instructions are not always available to help the learner so learners need to have discipline to work independently without the instructor's assistance.

INTEGRATING E-LEARNING INTO MEDICAL EDUCATION

The integration of e-learning into existing medical curricula

should be the result of a well-devised plan that begins with

a needs assessment and concludes with the decision to

use e-learning.

Although some institutions have tried to use e-learning as a

stand-alone solution to updating or expanding their curricula,

we believe it is best to begin with an integrated

strategy that considers the benefits and burdens of blended

learning before revising the curriculum.

HOW TO MAKE AN EFFECTIVE ELEARNING MODULE

• I want to make a module that will be an effective learning resource. But …

Where do I start?

How can e-Learning make the content more interesting?

How will the learner track their progress – so that they will be confident that they have achieved something?

Page 27: E learning for Medical faculty

Creating Module for e-Learning The content must be from

reference materials only

Use standard material from

prescribed textbook,

reference books, journals etc.

Update the content on

regular basis

Create an assessment tool

for the learner when they

finish their learning exercise.

CREATING FACULTY FOR PEER REVIEWING CONTENTS

The evaluation of e-learning should include a peer-review process and an assessment of outcomes such as learner satisfaction, content usability, and demonstration of learning.

Faculty skills in creating e-learning may differ from those needed for traditional teaching; faculty rewards for scholarly activity must recognize this difference and should be commensurate with effort.
