Intent to Contribute Statement: The EBY Nurse Practice committee has been established to endorse nursing policies. The committee determined that a new level of caring behaviors and culture were needed for the new hospital that was being constructed. The committee has embarked on a journey of rediscovering the fundamentals for the science of human caring and the delivery of nursing care. Our outcomes are to look at creating the committee who are comprised of representatives of each unit within the East Bay [OAK and RCH] to become change agents and role models for caring behaviors that will be the new culture of caring for the East Bay and particularly in the new Oakland Flagship hospital.

• Oakland Medical Center will be moving into a new building July 1st, 2014.

• The East Bay Nurse Practice NPC committee expressed a desire to be apart of the creation of a new culture of excellence and compassion moving into the new building.

• The NPC embarked on a journey of discovery of how the Science of Human Caring creates a new vision of nursing beginning with Caritas Process #1.

• As the new flagship hospital was being constructed in full view of the old, the committee members the opportunity arose to consider new concepts of healing and connectedness with our patients.

• Mirror neurons, empathy, neurochemistry and the art of storytelling were part of the healing milieu.

• This reconnection to self was and “is” the key to equanimity for self and others and the core of nursing.
