WHY DO YOU WANT TO BECOME PREPARED???

YOU CAN NEVER PREDICT EMERGENCIES.

They arise often as a surprise and unpredicted.

“Proper planning prevents poor performance.”

Planning should include natural disasters, acquired emergencies and based on in the area you live.

Sometimes tension after an emergency can make things worse if you are not prepared.

It may seem that prepping takes a long time and is expensive, but if you plug away at it it’ll you’ll see you have most of the items you need.

Look at prepping as a way to save lives and care for your friends and family. Don’t have the mentality that it’ll never happen.

Think of prepping as Insurance, you don’t want those bad things of health or auto accidents to occur but you plan ahead just incase. Prepping for accidents/emergencies or catastrophes can be considered the same. It can bring you peace of mind often in times of panic and stress if those around you are not prepared.

Page 8: Emergency Preparedness Using Essential Oils

S.T.O.P RULE:1. STOP AND REALIZE WHAT IS GOING ON2. THINK WISELY AND DON’T PANIC3. OBSERVE THE HAPPENINGS AROUND & ACCEPT THE SERIOUSNESS 4. ACT ACCORDINGLY TO YOUR SURVIVAL PLAN

Page 9: Emergency Preparedness Using Essential Oils

3 STEPS TO ALL-HAZARDS APPROACH

Take the simple 3-step all-hazards approach: 1) Have a kit, 2) Have a plan, and 3) Stay informed.

GUIDELINES BEFORE USING YOUR ESSENTIAL OILS

1. Always keep a bottle of V-6 Vegetable Mixing Oil, Massage Oil Base or any pure vegetable oil handy when using essential oils. Vegetable oils dilute essential oils if they cause discomfort or skin irritation.

2. Keep bottles of essential oils tightly closed and store them in a cool location away from light. If stored properly, essential oils will maintain their potency for many years.

3. Keep essential oils out of reach of children. Treat them as you would any product for therapeutic use.

4. Do not use essential oils rich in menthol (such as peppermint) on the throat or neck area of children under thirty months of age.

5. Direct sunlight and essential oils. Lemon, Bergamot, Orange, Grapefruit, Tangerine, White Angelica and other citrus oils may cause a rash or darker pigmentation if applied to skin exposed to direct sunlight or UV rays within 3-4 days of use.

6. Keep essential oils away from eye areas and do not put into ears. Do not handle contact lenses or rub eyes with essential oils on fingers. Oils with high phenol content – oregano, helichrysum, cinnamon, thyme, clove, lemongrass, bergamot, Thieves and ImmuPower – may damage contacts and irritate eyes.

Page 16: Emergency Preparedness Using Essential Oils

GUIDELINES CONTINUED…7. Pregnant women should consult their health care professional before using essential oils containing

constituents with hormone-like activity, such as clary sage, sage, Idaho tansy, juniper and fennel.

8. Epileptics and those with high blood pressure should consult their health care professional before using essential oils. Avoid using hyssop, fennel, and Idaho tansy oils.

9. People with allergies should test a small amount of oil on a small area of sensitive skin such as the inside of the arm, before applying the oil to other areas of the body. The bottom of the feet is one of the safest and most effective places to use essential oils.

10. Before taking GRAS (generally regarded as safe) essential oils internally, always dilute with an oil-soluble liquid like honey, olive oil or soy milk.

11. Do not add undiluted essential oils directly to bath water. Use Bath Gel Base as a dispersing agent for oils in the bath.

LEMONGRASS: VAPOUR-PHASE ACTIVITIES OF ESSENTIAL OILS AGAINST ANTIBIOTIC SENSITIVE AND RESISTANT BACTERIA INCLUDING MRSA.

AIMS: To determine whether essential oil (EO) vapours could reduce surface and airborne levels of bacteria including methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA).

METHODS AND RESULTS:

The antibacterial activity of geranium and lemongrass EO individually and blended were evaluated over a range of concentrations by direct contact and vapour diffusion. The EO were tested in vitro against a selection of antibiotic-sensitive and -resistant bacteria, including MRSA, vancomycin-resistant Enterococci (VRE), Acinetobacter baumanii and Clostridium difficile. An EO blend containing lemongrass and geranium was used to formulate BioScent that was dispersed into the environment using the ST Pro machine. The effects were variable depending on the methods used. In a sealed box environment, MRSA growth on seeded plates was reduced by 38% after 20 h exposure to BioScent vapour. In an office environment, the ST Pro machine dispersing BioScent effected an 89% reduction of airborne bacteria in 15 h, when operated at a constant output of 100%.

CONCLUSIONS:

EO vapours inhibited growth of antibiotic-sensitive and -resistant bacteria in vitro and reduced surface and airborne levels of bacteria.

SIGNIFICANCE AND IMPACT OF THE STUDY:

Results suggest that EO vapours, particularly Bioscent, could be used as a method of air disinfection.

▪ Chemical composition and bioactivity of different oregano (Origanum vulgare) extracts and essential oil. Teixeira B1, Marques A, Ramos C, Serrano C, Matos O, Neng NR, Nogueira JM, Saraiva JA, Nunes ML.

BACKGROUND:

There is a growing interest in industry to replace synthetic chemicals by natural products with bioactive properties. Aromatic plants are excellent sources of bioactive compounds that can be extracted using several processes. As far as oregano is concerned, studies are lacking addressing the effect of extraction processes in bioactivity of extracts. This study aimed to characterise the in vitro antioxidant and antibacterial properties of oregano (Origanum vulgare) essential oil and extracts (in hot and cold water, and ethanol), and the chemical composition of its essential oil.

RESULTS:

The major components of oregano essential oil were carvacrol, β-fenchyl alcohol, thymol, and γ-terpinene. Hot water extract had the strongest antioxidant properties and the highest phenolic content. All extracts were ineffective in inhibiting the growth of the seven tested bacteria. In contrast, the essential oil inhibited the growth of all bacteria, causing greater reductions on both Listeria strains (L. monocytogenes and L. innocua).

CONCLUSION:

O. vulgare extracts and essential oil from Portuguese origin are strong candidates to replace synthetic chemicals used by the industry. © 2013 Society of Chemical Industry.
