What is hangover?

A hangover or delayed alcohol induced headache describes the sum of unpleasant physiological effects following heavy consumption of alcoholic beverages. An alcohol hangover is associated with a variety of symptoms that may include dehydration, fatigue, headache, body aches, vomiting, diarrhea, flatulence, weakness, elevated body temperature, hypersalivation, difficulty concentrating, sweating, anxiety, dysphoria, irritability, sensitivity to light and noise, erratic motor functions (including tremor), trouble sleeping, severe hunger, halitosis, and lack of depth perception. In addition to the physical symptoms, a hangover may also induce psychological symptoms including heightened feelings of depression and anxiety, mood swings, etc. Many people will also be repulsed by the thought, taste or smell of alcohol during a hangover. The symptoms vary from person to person, and occasion to occasion, usually beginning several hours after drinking. Does it cost?

Socio-economic loss impetus serious threat for the economies going forward. On economic side, there will be huge revenue and productivity loss whereas on social side, life will degrade day by day due to imbalance on mental side and its due course effects on families and societies.

A study in Annals of Internal Medicine compiled the enormous cost of lost productivity induced by hangovers. The study shows that alcohol hangover is characterized by headache, tremulousness, nausea, diarrhea, and fatigue combined with decreased occupational, cognitive, or visual-spatial skill performance. Although hangover might be considered trivial - just deserts for the overindulgent—it has substantial economic consequences. A recent British study noted that alcohol use accounted for 2 billion pounds ($3.3 billion U.S.) in lost wages each year, most of which resulted from work missed because of hangover. Alcohol costs in Canada amount to $7.5 billion each year, and $1.4 billion is lost each year because of decreased occupational productivity caused by hangover-like symptoms. Studies in other countries have yielded similar per capita estimates for the annual cost of alcohol ingestion: Australia, $3.8 billion; New Zealand, $331 million; and the United States, $148 billion. Greenfield recently estimated the average annual opportunity cost due to hangover as $2000 per working adult.

Based on these statistics, hangover causes a significant economic & social loss and long lasting impact on socio-economic systems of the country. The staggering cost of alcoholic hangover could be significantly mitigated if drinkers take preventive action before drinking.

Is there any remedy?

What is available?Hangovers are poorly understood from a medical point of view. Health care professionals prefer to study alcohol abuse from a standpoint of treatment and prevention, and there is a view that the hangover provides a useful, natural and intrinsic disincentive to excessive drinking. Within the limited amount of serious study on the subject, there is debate about whether a hangover might be prevented or at least mitigated; additionally, there is a vast body of folk medicine and simple quackery. There is currently no empirically proven mechanism for prevention except reducing the amount of ethanol consumed, or for making oneself sober other than waiting for the body to metabolize ingested alcohol, which occurs via oxidation through the liver before alcohol leaves the body. A four-page literature review in British Medical Journal concludes: "No compelling evidence exists to suggest that any conventional or complementary intervention is effective for preventing or treating alcohol hangover. The most effective way to avoid the symptoms of alcohol induced hangover is to avoid drinking.

Potentially beneficial remedies:There are several potentially post drinking beneficial remedies available like food and water, rehydration, Oxygen, Tolfenamic acid, Vitamin B6, Chlormethiazole, Rosiglitazone, acetylcysteine, etc. But nothing has proven complete remedy for hangover. This does not prevent effects and its impact of post drinking syndromes but tries to remove effects of it to minimal extent. There is no such medicine available in the world which proactively prevents post drinking syndromes before its occurrence.
