• Hemoglobin, in very simple terms, is a measure of how much oxygen is in a person’s blood.

• Normal hemoglobin level is 10-12.

• When he was admitted to the hospital, his was 1.7!

• Shortly after I spoke to you last Dec., we received his diagnosis of Pearson Syndrome. Bone marrow failure, such as Bennett’s, is a clear marker of this mitochondrial disease that wreaks havoc in the body.

WHO CAN DONATE?

• Any blood TYPE needs to donate. This is a blood bank where they maintain an adequate supply to meet the needs of all blood types.

• Must be at least 16 years of age. At age 16 or 17 you must weigh at least 125 pounds. If you are 16, you will also need a parent permission slip signed .

• If you are 18 or older you must weigh at least 110 pounds and we ask that you let your parent know that your hope to donate during our blood drive.

• They will do a mini-screening to check your blood for things such as iron levels which are critical for healthy blood.

• Prefer that you do not take aspirin for 48hrs prior to donating.

BEFORE DONATING• Eat well. Try to always include iron-rich foods in your

diet. These foods include: beef, pork, poultry (chicken, turkey), fish, lamb, clams, oysters, nuts, raisins, peas, spinach and other dark, leafy greens.

• Get a good night’s sleep.• Drink plenty of fluids.• Drinking water 30 minutes before giving blood has

been found to improve the donation experience.Drinking fluids before your donation helps maintain good circulation throughout your body, and helps prevent light-headedness.
