The Beginnings

Use of homegrown EMR since 1992

– Initially a way to view schedule and get some lab data

– 1996 – became an electronic referral entry system

– Gradually expanded to add progress notes, internal messaging,

and other features

– Prior system menu driven and highly intuitive

Didn’t talk to lab systems, radiology systems, business

systems

– No transfer of data outside of system and no electronic patient

access but any provider could access any patient’s records

– Reached limit of ability to expand

New Feature – Your Flowsheets

This week we have initiated the ability for the patient to

enter home monitored blood pressure data into their chart

for their physician to see.

– We will soon introduce the ability to enter data for blood sugar,

weight management, peak flow, and others.

– Abnormal entries automatically message the healthcare team

Overview of KP Health Connect Features Cont.

For security purposes, members must register to use the

secure features on kp.org

– As with all the other secure features on kp.org (like prescription refill) to use

these new features members will need to be registered on the

kaiserpermanente.org Web site. Within 4-7 days of registering, members will

receive a password via US Mail and will have full access to all of the secure

features on the Web site.

Who can use KP HealthConnect Online

– Adult members over the age of 18

– Adult members acting on behalf of a child / family member up to the

child’s 13th birthday

– Teens (from the 13th birthday to the 18th birthday) will have limited

access

A Member’s Experience

Yesterday morning I went in for a routine lab work-up to monitor my

cholesterol.

By lunchtime that same day your system forwarded the lab results

to me.

Then shortly thereafter, my physician, … contacted me with an

online message (I was notified by email that the online message

was sent) with further advice and clarification of the how to better

secure continuing health care support.

WOW! This is well done! I am impressed.

Your system is so much better than the piecemeal,

inefficient methods being used by other health care

As a typical male, I do not go out of my way to see to

my health care needs. However, your easy-to-use,

efficient, and timely digital system for communicating

with me, one of your members, has helped me

– Provides members automatic reminders to let them know when they have

upcoming appointments, soon to be due or overdue health reminders, new

lab test results and / or new / unread messages.
