Opening ThOughTs

As we look toward fall, it reminds us of all the changes and activities that take place—from school starting to holiday

planning and, of course, the change of season.Beaufort Memorial has been going through its

own seasons of change, and we’re proud that our community will benefit from them all.

Since we last touched base, BMH has expanded its cancer services by opening a new medical oncol-ogy practice and a new chemotherapy and infusion services center, both in Beaufort Medical Plaza, next to the hospital.

We also have several new providers on staff, including a new OB-GYN and a new certified nurse-midwife in our Obstetrics & Gynecology Specialists prac-tice; a new psychiatrist in our Sea Island Psychiatry practice; and a new critical care specialist to work with Dr. Peter Manos in our ICU.

Now a part of our administrative team is a vice president of Beaufort Memorial Physician Partners, our network of primary care and spe-cialty practices.

If you’re planning to have a baby, you’ll be thrilled to know that we’ve submit-ted plans to the state for a $6 million renovation and expansion of our Birthing Center. And our Lactation Support Program continues to be a growing, popular and supportive service for new moms learning to feed their babies.

Consistent with our goal of providing safe, high-quality care, we recently hired new directors of quality, risk, corporate compliance and information technol-ogy security. These positions, some of which have been in place for quite some time, serve to make the environments of both safety and patient care stronger for you and for our organization.

Speaking of safety, you can now find information about patient safety and quality on our website—another of the many initiatives designed to provide transparency about the state of your community hospital. You can find that information under the “About Us” tab on our home page.

There is much more to learn about new developments at Beaufort Memorial, and how they can benefit you and your loved ones, in this issue of Living Well mag-azine. We hope you’ll enjoy reading about our providers, patients and services.

James Benn, BSN, MSN-PMHNPA registered nurse with nearly 30 years’ experience, James Benn has been on the staff of Beaufort Memorial’s adult mental health unit since 1998. He became a psychiatric men-tal health nurse practitioner in the unit in 2014 after complet-ing his graduate studies at the University of North Dakota.

A four-year veteran of the U.S. Army, Benn started his medical career in Chesapeake, Va. He earned his Associate of Science in Nursing at Norfolk State University in Virginia and his Bachelor of Science in Nursing at University of South Carolina Upstate. He is an instructor in Basic Life Support and is certified in Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support and Pediatric Advanced Life Support.

Prior to joining the Beaufort practice, Mohler worked for five years in a gastroenterol-ogy office and three years in an internal medicine practice in Ohio. A graduate of Kent State University with a Bachelor of Science in Nursing, Mohler started her medical career in the intensive care unit at two Ohio hospitals. She went on to receive her master’s degree from the University of Akron, earning certification as a nurse practitioner in 2006.

Paul J. Schaefer, PA-CClemson graduate Paul Schaefer joined Beaufort Memorial Primary Care in March. As a certified phy-sician assistant, he works closely with the group’s two board-certified internists, Andrea Hucks, MD, and Steven Kessel, MD.

Before earning his Master of Physician Assistant Studies at the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center, he worked for the Medical University of South Carolina, first as a patient care technician and then as a fine-needle aspiration tech-nician, assisting cytopatholo-gists with procedures in the oncology, pulmonology, interventional radiology and OB-GYN specialties.

Nancy Thomas, PA-CBeaufort Memorial Surgical Specialists recently welcomed certified physician assistant Nancy Thomas to its team of five doctors specializing in general, laparoscopic and vascular surgery. A gradu-ate of the Medical University of South Carolina (MUSC), Thomas has clinical experience in a wide range of medical fields, from internal and emer-gency medicine to pediatrics and women’s health.

During her graduate studies at MUSC, she worked with BMH surgeon Perry Burrus, MD, assisting him in the operating room with a diverse group of cases, including laparoscopic cholecystectomies, appen-dectomies, hernia repairs, lumpectomies, mastectomies and breast biopsies. n

FAMILY DIET DOS AND DON’TSMaking over your family’s eating habits to meet the Dietary Guidelines for Americans can seem like a daunting task. James Simmons, MD, of All Children’s Pediatrics in Port Royal, suggests taking three small steps to get you on the road to good nutrition:

First and Foremost. Breakfast really is the most impor-tant meal of the day. “Don’t even think about skipping it,” Simmons says. “You should have breakfast seven days a week.”

Fast and Fattening. When you’re busy running kids from ballet class to baseball practice, you’re bound to give in to temptation on occasion and zip into a fast-food restaurant for dinner on the go.

“If you have to eat fast food, go for the healthier options,” Simmons says. “Instead of a hamburger, order chicken or fi sh. Use half the package of dressing on your salad and don’t get bread. And no soda or sweet tea.”

Foods to Forget. “Pizza is one of the most fattening foods you can eat,” Simmons says. “Don’t eat it more than once or twice a month. And limit the portions to two or three slices.”

SNACK ATTACKYou know the drill. The kids get home from school and head straight to the kitchen to raid the fridge and pantry.

It’s those in-between-meals munchies that cause kids to really pack on the pounds, says Beaufort Memorial pediatrician James Simmons, MD.

“The problem lies with the proliferation of calorie-dense snacks,” Simmons says. “I tell parents not to buy cook-ies, chips, soda, Capri Sun or any other high-fat snack or

sugary drink.”Instead, set out a bowl of bananas, oranges,

apples or grapes. Keep a pitcher of water in the refrigerator to encourage them to go for calorie-free H20.

Simmons says it’s important to teach your children good eating habits starting at an early

age—not just for their physical well-being, but for their mental health, too.

“Kids who are overweight often suff er from low self-esteem,” Simmons says. “If they can’t lose the

weight, they see it as a failure and get depressed.”

WEIGHTY ISSUESWhen most people diet, they concentrate on the digits staring back at them on the scale. But your weight isn’t the only num-ber you should be tracking, says Robert Vyge, MD, of Beaufort Memorial Lady’s Island Internal Medicine.

“I’m more concerned with body mass index (BMI),” Vyge says. “If it’s more than 30, you need to see your doctor to be assessed for comorbidities like diabetes, hypertension and high cholesterol.”

You’ll also want to measure your waist circumference. For a woman, it shouldn’t be greater than 35; for a man, no more than 40.

“Stay away from diets that promise you can lose 30 pounds in 30 days,” Vyge advises. “You’re more likely to keep the weight off if you set a goal to lose fi ve pounds a month.”

Adopting HealtHy HabitsLosing weight and keeping it off requires lifestyle changes you can stick with for at least a year, not just a few weeks. A good place to start is downsizing your portions.

As you get older, your muscle mass decreases and your metabolism slows down, so it takes fewer calories to main-tain your current weight. But that doesn’t mean you have to forgo all the foods you love.

“It’s OK to have chips—as a treat, not a staple,” BMH internist Robert Vyge, MD, says. “Having a small piece of cake is fine; having half a cake is not.”

Keeping track of everything you consume, including beverages, will help you assess problem areas.

“There’s no magic pill for losing weight,” Vyge says. “It’s 100 percent about lifestyle modifications.”

the other hAlf of the equAtionEveryone knows diet and exercise are the two cornerstones of a weight-loss plan at any age. While you can control what your kids eat at home, it’s more dif-ficult to regiment their physical activity.

“It’s not enough to tell your kids to go out and play,” says BMH pediatrician James Simmons, MD. “If you leave it to them, they’ll sit outside and play games on their phones.”

To get them to be more active, start by limiting the time they spend staring at a screen. That includes cellphones, com-puters, tablets, electronic games and TV.

If your kids aren’t into sports, there are plenty of other activities that will get them moving, including swimming, playing tag, running around with the dog, and dancing.

Another easy option is to mark out a half-mile distance from your home and make the 1-mile round-trip walk part of your family’s after-dinner routine.

“Not only are you setting a good example for your children,” Simmons says, “it promotes family bonding because you can talk about your day while you walk.”PH

Fresh From the FarmBeaufort Memorial physicians enjoy Mother Nature’s bounty

Neal Shealy, MD

If he hadn’t become a family medicine specialist, Neal Shealy, MD, could have been

a tree farmer.“I’ve always liked the outdoors,”

says Shealy, who grew up in the small country town of Leesville, S.C. “Forestry was one of the career possibilities I was considering.”

Moving to Varnville in 1991 to serve as medical director of the recently renamed Beaufort Memorial Harrison Peeples Health Care Center gave him the opportunity to pursue both his interests: caring for patients and caring for pines.

In rural Hampton County, Shealy had no trouble finding 80 acres of prime tree-growing land to lay down roots with his wife, Sharon, and their two sons Phillip and Luke. Once settled, he quickly dug into his off-hours enterprise.

Over the last 25 years, Shealy has planted thousands of longleaf, slash and

loblolly pine seedlings on his property. And he’s done it all by hand, with a little help from his sons and a few friends.

“I use a dibble to create the hole, put the plant in and use the heel of my boot to pack the dirt,” he explains. “It’s a pretty labor-intensive process.”

Today, he’s harvesting the pine straw from trees that are at least 15 years old. Those he thins out from the forest are sold for pulpwood. In five to 15 more years, he’ll be able to sell the first of his plantings for sawtimber.

Having a forest as your backyard has other advantages.

wife and I like to walk through the woods with our dogs,” Shealy says. “I also hunt deer on the property. I keep my freezer pretty well stocked.”

While his wife leaves the tree farm-ing to Shealy, she shares his interest in his other occupation. A family nurse practitioner at Harrison Peeples, Sharon has traveled extensively with Shealy on mission trips to places like Tanzania, Guatemala and Colombia.

Along with tree farming and hunting, Shealy enjoys freshwater fishing from his canoe.

“It’s just nice to get outside and watch the wildlife,” he says.

Marcus Newberry, MD

When it comes to cooking, Marcus Newberry, MD, is a gastronomic daredevil.

Give him a fresh ingredient, no matter how bizarre, and he’ll turn it into haute cuisine.

With the help of his wife and culi- nary sidekick, Elizabeth, he has trans-formed the daily dinner grind into a gourmet adventure.

“We love cooking with exotic ingre-dients,” he says. “My wife won’t turn her nose up at anything.”

Octopus, conch, squid? Bring ’em on. As fearless foodies, they’ve even tried the Indo-Pacific lionfish, inadvertently joining a grass-roots campaign to con-sume the menacing invasive species out of existence in our coastal waters.

“We take advantage of the great local seafood we have here in Beaufort,” Newberry says. “We grab whatever is looking good and make it up from there.

We don’t have many misses, although some are better than others.”

Cruising the farmers’ markets for fresh veggies and fruits is a favorite pastime for the Beaufort couple, now going on three years married. While his wife is a hard-and-fast recipe follower, Newberry prefers to wing it. They both enjoy experimenting with fusion cuisine, blending culinary traditions from differ-ent regions, including India and Thailand.

“It’s all about taste,” Newberry says. “One day we realized we could do better cooking at home than eating out.”

A board-certified internist, Newberry first moved to Beaufort in 1995 and two years later helped found Lowcountry Medical Group. After six years in practice, the father of two went back to school for training in medical oncology.

Newberry completed his three-year fellowship at the Medical University of South Carolina in 2004 and returned to practice once again with the recently renamed Beaufort Memorial Lowcountry Medical Group. Earlier this year, he left his longtime colleagues to open Beaufort Memorial Oncology Specialists at Beaufort Medical Plaza.

When he’s not in the kitchen whip-ping up a meal, Newberry enjoys play-ing golf, boating and traveling to sunny beach destinations.

“We like places like Cozumel, the Bahamas and Costa Rica,” he says. “We call them blue water vacations.” n

Q How do I know if I have dense breasts?Breast density is not related to

breast size or firmness. The only way to determine the density of breasts is by a visual assessment of a mammogram. At Beaufort Memorial, our radiologists use special software that helps them estimate breast density more accurately.

If the mammogram reveals a patient has dense breasts, we inform both the patient and her physician so they can determine whether closer monitoring is warranted.

Q What is breast density and why is it important?Women’s breasts are made up

mostly of fat and breast tissue. High breast density means there is a greater amount of breast tissue than fat.

Studies have shown that women with dense breasts are three to five times more likely to develop breast cancer than women with low breast density.

Dense breasts also make it more dif-ficult for radiologists to detect cancer using conventional mammograms. On the digital image, dense breast tissue and tumors both appear white. Fatty tissue, on the other hand, looks almost black, making it much easier to spot breast masses in the tissue.

Q Are there any tests that are more effective in spot-ting cancers in women with

dense breasts?Yes. New 3-D mammography now being used in the Beaufort Memorial Women’s Imaging Center provides a clearer view of the breast, improving breast cancer

detection by 40 percent and reducing the number of false positives that lead to unnecessary biopsies. Because almost all women can benefit from 3-D mam-mography, we are using it for the major-ity of our routine screenings as well.

Q What should I do if I have dense breast tissue?Women with dense breasts

should be monitored more closely. Those with additional breast cancer risk factors, including a family history of the disease, are encouraged to join Beaufort Memorial’s High-Risk Breast Cancer Clinic.

In addition to an annual 3-D mam-mogram, high-risk patients should have a clinical breast exam every six months. For some patients, hormone therapy may be recommended. n

zero tolerance for excuses or self-doubt.Best known for her former role on reality-

TV competition The Biggest Loser, in which the high-octane personal trainer pushed those at their worst to shape up and slim down, Michaels knows that adopting a life-style shift—be it dietary, mental or physical, or all three—is tough.

So, of course, she’s tougher.“The reality is, I’m not a sympathetic per-

son,” Michaels, 41, told Britain’s Daily Mail last year. “I’m empathetic. I get it. It’s hard.”

But, she added, “I also know that you can do it.”

Based on her work and experience, Michaels has off ered guidelines to personal success—no matter what kind of change you want to achieve.

DREAM ItLarge or small, all goals start with a vision. Too often, though, they’re derailed by indif-ference—or worse, fear.

“Often, we don’t try because then we can’t fail,” Michaels wrote in her 2011 book Unlimited: A Three-Step Plan for Achieving Your Dreams. “Every single person I have ever worked with feels this way.”

Believe it or not, Michaels once did, too: Bullied and overweight as a teenager, she gained confi dence, and shed those extra pounds, with martial arts. Yet she aban-doned the pursuit after her emotions, still fragile from the past, got the best of her.

A handwritten letter from her teacher nudged the reluctant pupil back into the dojo, where, at 21, Michaels kicked her way to esteemed black-belt status—a triumph she considers her life’s key turning point.

Still, “it’s often worse before (taking action) than when you get into the situ-ation,” Conklin says. And, as Michaels would attest, there’s simply no reason not to try.

PLAN ItIf your personal goals are vague, achiev-ing change is diffi cult, if not impossible, Michaels stresses.

Looking to lose weight? Instead of saying “I want to be thin,” ask your-self why you’ve set that goal. Michaels, an advocate of lists and collage-style vision boards, suggests identifying a clear objective—to drop 10 pounds by summer to fi t into a new swimsuit, for example, or to complete a half-marathon next year.

“Form an emotional connection with your goal,” Michaels told Fitness maga-zine in 2011. “Then, when you choose between a bagel and egg whites for breakfast, you make the choice with your goal in mind.”

Little things matter. In Unlimited, Michaels recalls an otherwise motivated Biggest Loser participant whose poor den-tal hygiene led to unexpected oral sur-gery. The absence cut into his workout time and sent the man packing after a subpar weigh-in.

“Every choice we make has a direct and dramatic impact on our lives,” Michaels writes.

Goals (and actions) needn’t be dra-matic. Michaels notes that establishing a pattern of minor victories can spur sizable shifts—and, ultimately, redefi ne one’s self-image.

Bob Deutsch, PhD, a cognitive anthropologist and the author of The 5 Essentials: Using Your Inborn Resources to Create a Fulfi lling Life, likens the pro-cess to viewing a kaleidoscope.

“When you turn it just the small-est degree, the whole thing, the pattern, convulses into something diff erent,” Deutsch says. “That’s also true with behavior.”

5 THINGS YOU (PROBABLY) DON’T KNOW ABOUT JILLIAN MICHAELS1 She’s a nice person. Michaels swears her tough-girl

persona is overblown: “I really don’t have a mean bone in my body!” she told Redbook in 2010. In fact, concerns over her increasingly harsh portrayal on TV spurred Michaels to leave The Biggest Loser last year.

2 Like the rest of us, she has insecurities. “I’ve never fully loved my booty,” Michaels declared last year on The Wendy Williams Show. Deeper insecurities also lurk: “I feel helpless all the time, and it drives me to become powerful so I can make a diff erence,” she told Us Weekly in 2010.

WORK ItMichaels didn’t become queen of an empire without the same sweat and toil she demands from clients and viewers of her popular DVD workouts.

She spent several years in her 20s working for a Hollywood talent agency before being unexpectedly fi red. But the connections Michaels made there with A-list clients helped her launch a personal-training busi-ness, just the kind of fulfi lling change she was looking for.

That venture, in turn, boosted her professional profi le when auditioning for The Biggest Loser. She tried out for the NBC show after failing to win a spot on the VH1 reality program Flab to Fab. While that defeat at fi rst left her humili-ated, Michaels dusted herself off , refi ned her sales pitch and nailed the tryout for the role that made her a celebrity.

She advises others to follow a simi-lar game plan: A bit of fake-it-till-you-make-it bravado combined with planning, practice and positivity.

“It’s how you respond and move forward that matters,” Michaels told Good Housekeeping last year. “If you don’t take responsibility for your life, you disempower yourself from chang-ing anything.”

MAINTAIN ItFrom junk food and laziness to other people’s toxic personalities, roadblocks lurk around every corner. Keep things that might derail momentum out of your orbit, Michaels urges—and fi gure out how you’ll react when they arise.

That way, says Conklin, “you’ll already have a plan for what to do.”

If a storm disrupts your usual morning run, hit the gym at lunch-time instead. Going out for Mexican food? Don’t allow the server to put down tempting tortilla chips, Michaels suggests.

If another person aff ects your well-being and the relationship can’t be remedied, walk away. Michaels, long aff ected by a toxic childhood

relationship with her father, chose to cut ties.

Meanwhile, bring those with a positive outlook closer, says Deutsch, citing infl u-encers that “you can see yourself in, even symbolically.”

Study those who have reached bench-marks similar to your own ambitions—a friend or co-worker, perhaps, or even a celebrity (in a realistic sense, of course; Michaels wants people to achieve their own best mind and body—not Beyoncé’s).

“I’ll look at other people and I’ll see where they were and what they’ve done, and I’ll use it as a source of inspiration,” Michaels, whose role models include her mother and Oprah Winfrey, told Redbook in 2010.

In the end, there’s only one person who can make change happen: you.

“Accept your state of aff airs, get out of denial, take responsibility and choose to make a change,” Michaels writes in her 2013 book Slim for Life. “So get on it!” �

When Change is a Challenge

Determined as you are to stick to your new healthy lifestyle, you’re bound to get off track somewhere along the line. After all, you’re human.

“Instead of beating yourself up, look at what you’ve accomplished,” says Kim Edwards, a registered dietitian and certified diabetes educator at Beaufort Memorial. “There are other markers besides weight to consider. Maybe you’re finally able to bend down to tie your shoes or you’re breathing easier and sleeping better.”

It’s not all about the number on the scale. Other numbers—like your blood pres-sure, blood sugar level and lost inches around your waist—are just as important.

Hitting a plateau is normal when you’re trying to lose weight. But if you start seeing the numbers trending up, it’s time to take stock of what you’ve been doing

to cause the change in course.“I recommend the pay-to-play system,” Edwards says. “If you went on

vacation and ate with abandon, you’re going to have to give up something in your diet or hit it hard at the gym.”

Don’t look at your setbacks as failures or let them discourage you from forging ahead with your goals.

“Use your failures to your advantage,” Edwards says. “Instead of feeling stumped because you lost ground, learn from

your mistakes so you can avoid them in the future. It’s all about keeping a positive attitude.”

Somer, the author of Eat Your Way to Happiness, maintains that 75 percent of your diet should consist of “real foods” served as nature intended them: unpro-cessed and low in bad fats, sugar and sodium. That means there’s room for the foods you crave. Depriving your-self of everything you love sets you up for failure.

SHOP LIKE A EUROPEAN. After a trip to Italy, Somer better rec-

ognized the role American supermarkets play in undermining good intentions. Italian grocery stores are small and carry primarily fruits, vegetables, pasta, cheese and meats. Americans can dup-licate that experience here by concen-trating on the produce aisle, dairy case and butcher’s counter—steering clear of the central aisles with snacks and processed foods.

DINE WITH COMPANIONS.Meals with family and friends

make you eat more slowly and boost your emotional health. At a restaurant, ask the server to set aside half of your entree for leftovers before it reaches the table—if you’re dining with good com-pany, you won’t miss it, Mariano says.

CUT 100 CALORIES A DAY. A year later, say goodbye to about

10 pounds.

BUILD A 1-2-3 BREAKFAST. People who eat breakfast have

lasting energy, lose weight and keep it off , Somer says. Include a whole grain, protein and at least one colorful fruit or vegetable—perhaps a whole-grain waffl e with peanut butter and blueberries.

EAT LIKE OUR ANCESTORS. “We evolved on diets where our

ancestors ate pounds of produce, and now we balk at one serving,” Somer

says. Fill half your plate with colorful fruits and vegetables. Choose these for half of all snacks, too.

AVOID THE ALLURE OF SUGAR. “If I were going to pick

one thing that people need to watch, it would be sugar,” says Christiane Northrup, MD, the author of Goddesses Never Age: The Secret Prescription for Radiance, Vitality and Wellbeing. That advice pertains beyond sugary desserts and sodas. The body also converts sim-ple carbohydrates such as white bread into sugar. Better choices include whole-wheat bread, beans and vegetables—the “good” carbs that are digested slowly, preventing spikes in blood sugar.

ENJOY THE EXPERIENCE OF A MEAL. “When I make myself

something for lunch, I make it warm,” Northrup says. “I add spices, listen to music and enjoy my food, and I’m not hungry afterward. When I just grab a bar or something, I’m still hungry. I haven’t fed myself.” �

Start by making changes in your kitchen, your easy-to-get-to reposi-tory for all things edible. You’re less likely to wolf down a tub of Ben & Jerry’s if it’s not in your freezer.

“Don’t bring home food that’s not part of a healthy diet,” advises Beaufort Memorial registered dieti-tian Roxanne Davis-Cote. “Once it’s in the house, it’s going to get eaten sooner or later.”

Follow these grocery-shopping tips to keep your kitchen junk free:3 Make a list. “Plan your meals for

the week and purchase just what

you need,” Davis-Cote says. “If it’s not on your list, leave it out of your cart.”

3 Don’t go to the grocery store hun-gry. “It’s hard to have self-control when your stomach is screaming for food,” says Davis-Cote.

3 Avoid your nemesis. If you’re a chips-aholic, bypass the chips aisle. Same for ice cream, cookies or any other food you find irresistible.

3 Go for the snack size. “It’s OK to have a treat now and then,” Davis-Cote says. “To keep from overindulging, buy single-serving portions of cookies and chips or ice cream bars instead of a gallon of ice cream.”

“Probably the worst (outcome of inactivity) is obesity, which ties in with everything else—heart disease, diabe-tes, possibly even things like dementia,” says Robert A. Stanton, MD, president of the American Orthopaedic Society for Sports Medicine.

The benefits of physical activity are equally clear as the consequences. They include not just stronger muscles and better balance and flexibility but also improved mood, blood pressure and cholesterol.

Stanton understands that finding time to take care of yourself is diffi-cult. “But we only get one shot on this planet,” he says. “Besides, there are only two ways to lose weight—eat less or exercise more—and in my opinion, the latter is more enjoyable.”

You may find yourself in Stanton’s camp if you exercise with this advice in mind.

The benefits of exercise are too great, the con-sequences of inactivity too dire to do nothing. Yet more than 23 percent of adults don’t par-ticipate in any form of exercise outside of their jobs—not even walking, according to America’s Health Rankings.

MAKE IT FUN. Turn on your favorite music and dance. Play

tag with your kids or keep-away with your dog in the park. “The key is fi nding something you enjoy doing and that is not too stressful to start,” Stanton says. “Even a short walk in your neighborhood burns calories and lowers cholesterol.”

KEEP MOVING AT THE OFFICE.“Even people who exercise regu-

larly have increased risks if they have a job where they sit all day,” says Jeremy M. Burnham, MD, a spokesman for the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons. Short walk breaks throughout the day can off set the damage.

MIX IT UP. Burnham recom-mends at least 30 minutes of

physical activity at least fi ve days a week, split into 10-minute sessions if that better fi ts your schedule or beginner status. Incorporate aerobic activity, range-of-motion exercises and strength training.

INVEST IN NEW SHOES. Cushioned, stable shoes won’t

just make exercise easier. They will reinforce your commitment to your health, Burnham says.

THINK LIKE A BOY SCOUT. Keep a backup pair of athletic

shoes in your car or resistance bands in your suitcase, Stanton suggests. You’ll be prepared for a walk or workout wher-ever you fi nd yourself.

SHAKE UP COUCH TIME. Stand up and move around between

chapters of the book you’re reading or during every TV commercial. Pace the room or pedal on a stationary bike while on the phone.

KEEP TRACK. Set a goal, then note on a calendar or an elec-

tronic health tracker what you accom-plish toward it. By six weeks, proof will be visible: You’re well on your way to creating a new habit, Burnham says.

DON’T TAKE THE EASY ROUTE. Skip the elevator and

take the stairs. Walk to a colleague’s desk instead of emailing. Park farther away from the store entrance. “When people were hunters and gatherers, they didn’t sit around waiting for their take-out order to be ready,” Stanton says.

MAKE A DATE: Pick a time and place to meet a friend for a walk

or bike ride. You won’t want to let each other down. Volunteer to walk your kids and the neighbor’s to school two morn-ings a week. �

A Winning FormulA For Losing WeightHere’s a handy formula for losing weight: To lose one pound, cut 3,500 calories.

Play with the formula to find a balance that suits your lifestyle. For example, you can choose to eliminate 500 calories from your daily diet or burn an extra 500 calories through exercise.

“Crash diets never work,” says Paul Schaefer, a physician assistant at Beaufort Memorial Primary Care. “So if you take 250 calories out of your diet every day and add 250 calo-ries’ worth of exercise, you can still lose a pound a week.”

Cutting even 100 calories a day for a year results in a 10-pound loss.

To cut about 100 calories from your diet, you should:3 Choose diet soda instead of the

sugary kind.3 Skip cheese on your sandwich.3 Toss salad with one tablespoon of

S mokingNineteen percent of adults smoke regularly, down from 29.5 percent in 1990, according

to America’s Health Rankings. That’s the good news.

But in 2014, then-acting U.S. Surgeon General Boris Lushniak, MD, warned that today’s smokers were at greater risk of developing lung cancer than were smokers 50 years ago. He attributed the increased risk to changes in the way cigarettes are made and the chemicals they contain.

Every year, more than 392,000 Americans die from tobacco-caused dis-ease, including lung cancer and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), making tobacco use the leading cause of preventable death, the American Lung Association says.

These tried-and-true tricks of suc-cessful quitters may help break your tobacco habit:

DOCUMENT YOUR COMMIT-MENT. List reasons for wanting

to quit, and pick a quit date. Two weeks in the future gives you time to prepare.

TALK WITH YOUR DOCTOR OR PHARMACIST. Tobacco

cessation products can help you reach your goal.

ELIMINATE TEMPTATIONS. Rid your house, car and work-

space of tobacco products. Clean your house and clothes to remove lingering tobacco smells.

VISIT YOUR DENTIST. You won’t want to stain those newly

cleaned teeth.

DON’T TOUGH IT OUT ALONE. Tell family and friends about

your plan and invite them to smoke-free nights out.

S tressStress isn’t always a villain. It plays a critical role in keep-ing us alert and safe. Too

much, though, and our immune, diges-tive and reproductive systems suff er the consequences.

“Every measure of health is aff ected by stressful situations,” says licensed psychotherapist Wendy Boorn, the author of I Thought I’d Be Done by Now: Hope and Help for Mothers of Adult Children Searching for Peace.

Stress compromises sleep, contrib-utes to addictive behaviors like smoking and detracts from physical and mental well-being.

The body can absorb short periods of stress, Boorn says. But chronic stress requires coping strategies like these:

TAKE A MEDITATION BREAK.Sit quietly for 10 minutes while

focusing on your breath. “It helps you learn how to be self-contained, how to create a sense of calmness within your-self, even when there’s a storm raging around you,” Boorn says.

LET IT GO. Most circumstances are not inherently stressful.

“People create their own stress by how they react to situations,” Boorn says. “Traffi c is a great example. I say (silently, to the off ending driver), ‘OK, have the road.’�”

SET LIMITS. You want to lose weight, exercise more, be a better

person. But start with one small habit and practice it daily. “People try to do too much, too quickly and underestimate how diffi cult it can be,” Boorn says. “Then they’re stressed and disappointed in themselves, and they give up.” �

A Good dAy, A Good NiGhtJust because you’re tired doesn’t mean you’re going to sleep well. Charles Sevastos, DO, a family medi-cine specialist at Beaufort Memorial Bluffton Primary Care, offers these tips to ensure a restful night of ZZZs:3 Relax. “Try meditation, reading or

evening prayers,” Sevastos says. “It can be anything that takes your mind off the stresses of the day and puts you in a better place to sleep.”

3 Drink warm milk. “The old adage does help,” says Sevastos. “And with microwaves, it’s easy to make.”

3 Take a melatonin supplement. “You can use it whether you have

difficulty falling asleep or are wak-ing up in the middle of the night,” he says. “It helps you keep a normal sleep cycle.”

3 Disconnect. “Smartphones, tablets, computers or any other electronic device that emits blue light will keep you from getting the quality REM sleep you need to feel rested,” Sevastos says. “Stop using them 30 minutes before you go to bed.”

This guy was too cool for school, ditching class for a smoke in the parking lot.

If your classmate is still lighting up, he has a higher risk of heart disease and can-cer today—and his skin prob-ably hasn’t aged well, either.

The chemicals in tobacco smoke aff ect the functioning of the heart and blood ves-sels. This damage drives up the risk for atherosclerosis, the process by which plaque accumulates and hardens in the arteries. Atherosclerosis leads to narrowed arteries and reduced blood fl ow.

Smoking aff ects other risk factors, as well. For example, it decreases exer-cise tolerance and increases blood pressure.

“Quitting smoking is the single best thing you can do (for your heart health),” says James Underberg, MD, an editorial board member for the Journal of Clinical Lipidology. If you have heart disease and you smoke, quit-ting smoking cuts your risk of heart attack and stroke by 50 percent. “It’s the single most modifi able risk factor with the biggest bang for the buck,” he says.

partiers, the brainiacs.Back then, youth may have pro-

tected us from some unhealthy habits. But because time is the great equalizer, every class reunion may reveal that a few more of your classmates have a diagnosis of the leading cause of death in the United States: heart disease. You remember the perfec-tionist who got straight A’s, served as class president and spent weekends traveling with the debate team. She’s prob-ably successful today, but her heart might need some TLC.

“When patients come into my offi ce, I say, ‘How are you doing?’��” Underberg says. “The fi rst sentence often has ‘stress’ in it.

“The impact on car-diovascular health is not insignifi cant,” he contin-ues. “Increased stress is related to increased risk of heart disease.”

Researchers are working to better understand the link

between heart disease and stress, but they know that stress drives up blood pres-sure. Other lifestyle fac-tors also come into play, Underberg notes.

“What do people do when they’re under stress? They eat more. They smoke,” he says. And these habits, as we know, put additional strain on the heart.

Talking to friends or seek-ing professional therapy works for some. Others might make changes in their lives, such as cutting back on hours at work or asking a spouse to pitch in more at home.

Here’s some good news for the multitaskers among us: “One of the best ways to

reduce stress is to exer-cise,” Underberg says.

So whether you go for a walk or take some swings at a punching

Simple StartS for Heart HealtHIf you’ve been overweight or a smoker since high school, the thought of chang-ing probably sounds overwhelming. But BMH cardiologist Stuart Smalheiser, MD, says getting healthy starts with making small changes.

If you’re out of shape, start by walking 15 minutes, twice a week until you work your way up to exercising 30 minutes a day, five days a week.

“Mild- to moderate-intensity exercise like brisk walking can be even more beneficial than high-intensity exercise,” Smalheiser says.

Order salmon instead of a burger at your favorite restaurant.

“Foods high in omega-3 fatty acids seem to have more benefit than taking a fish oil supplement,” he says.

And don’t skimp on the shut-eye. “You need eight hours of sleep to pro-tect your mental and physical health,” Smalheiser says.

To wind down from a stressful day and put yourself into sleep mode, take two minutes before bed time to sit quietly and meditate.

To be clear, any alcohol consumption before age 21 is considered excessive, but every high school has its partiers. The question is how drinking aff ects health long term.

First, the good news: Alcohol increases the good kind of cholesterol, HDL. “Alcohol has been shown in moderation to actually lower risk of heart disease,” says Rachel Johnson, a registered dieti-tian and a spokeswoman for the American Heart Association (AHA).

The moderation part is what’s tricky. That’s no more than one drink per day for women and no more than two per day for men. A “drink” is a 12-ounce beer, 5 ounces of wine, 8 ounces of malt liquor or a 1.5-ounce shot of 80-proof distilled spirits or liquor.

Excessive alcohol con-sumption can drive up blood pressure, and binge drinking can lead to heart problems, stroke and other serious health problems.

Even for moderate drink-ers, alcoholic beverages come with another price. Every cocktail adds empty calories to the diet.

She might have joked about her weight, but make no mistake: Your friend who cut gym class and dined at the vending machine was seriously hurting her heart.

Those ingrained habits can be hard to change, but one of the best ways to help the heart, Johnson says, is to achieve and maintain a healthy weight.

“It lowers your risk of high blood pressure and of developing type 2 diabetes,” she says, “and it helps to maintain a healthy blood lipid profi le.”

Where to start? Avoid sugary drinks, Johnson

says. The sugar in sodas and most fruit juices adds a lot of calories—without the benefi t of much nutrition.

Next, she says, eat plenty of vegetables and fruit, and watch portion sizes. Choose whole grains and lean meats, and eat fi sh (especially fatty fi sh like salmon) twice a week.

And don’t forget the other part of the weight-reduction equation: exercise. The key isn’t necessarily training for a marathon; it’s moving throughout the day.

“You may have heard that sitting is the new smoking,” Johnson adds.

Dear Brain,

Are you there? It’s me, your colon. You probably don’t think about me much. Don’t

worry. I’m not offended. Nobody much notices me unless something goes wrong.

I’m important, especially for our digestive system. I’m also known as the large

bowel or large intestine. I’m the last place food goes before it goes, well, out.

A lot can go wrong if you’re not having me checked on a regular basis, especially

now that you’re getting, ahem, mature.

I know the thought of examining me can make our friend the heart pump

pretty fast. Maybe our skin gets a little sweaty just thinking about the dreaded

me-cancer screening.

The real thing to sweat is that every year colorectal cancer is diagnosed in

140,000 Americans—more than a third of whom will die from it. In fact, it’s the

second leading cause of cancer death for men and women. They’ll die! Because

of me! That hurts.

But you’re also to blame, Brain, for not getting me screened. Some brains

think that colorectal cancer can’t be prevented, so why look for it at all? That’s

just not true.

“It’s a highly preventable and curable disease,” Stephanie Guiffre, director of

prevention and research at the Colon Cancer Alliance, reminds me.

Cancer down here starts out as a little tiny thing called a polyp. Found and

removed early, it can stop cancer in me before it starts. Sad thing is, only four

out of 10 people get a diagnosis at that stage.

Polyps don’t just cause cancer. These cauliflower-like growths can kill you by

causing diarrhea or bleeding from your rectum or by obstructing me, causing

colon perforation and inflammation.

Have I persuaded you to get a screening yet? How about this—about 30 percent

of middle-aged (that’s you!) or elderly people have colonic polyps. And here’s the

thing: If you have polyps, you probably won’t even realize it. Most people who

have them show no symptoms. If anything, you’ll experience rectal bleeding, iron

deficiency anemia, or maybe diarrhea or constipation. But not always.

Let’s GET TESTEDDon’t wait for the screening until your doctor brings me up. In one study, Guiff re tells me, only four of 10 doctors recommended colon cancer screenings to their patients.

“They have a wealth of things they need to cover, and often, this falls by the wayside,” she says.

When it comes to screenings, you have lots of options:

• The fecal occult blood test (FOBT) is one of the least invasive options. It’s used to fi nd blood in your stool that can’t be seen with the naked eye. All you have to do is send samples to a lab. A kit is provided. Doctors recommend repeating this test every year.

• The test you probably know best is the colonoscopy, in which the inside of the rectum and the entire colon are examined using a long, lighted tube called a colonoscope. If you decide on the colonoscopy, you’ll only have to think about me every 10 years after age 50.

• In the fl exible sigmoidoscopy, your rectum and the lower part of me are checked with a sigmoidoscope, a lighted tube. During a virtual colonoscopy, X-rays and a computer are used to take two- or three-dimensional images of me and the rectum. Both tests only need to be done every fi ve years.

• For a double-contrast barium enema, air and barium are pumped into your rectum, and a solution will show polyps or tumors on X-rays. You should repeat this test every fi ve to 10 years.

That doesn’t sound too bad, does it? Still, 44 percent of women and 40 percent of men 65 or older haven’t had a colo-noscopy or sigmoidoscopy, even though Medicare covers both procedures.

“The best test is the test that gets done,” Guiff re says.

Getting Me READYOK, getting ready for a screening isn’t a beach vacation. For a colonoscopy, I need to be fully prepped. This means any solids need to be out of the stomach and bowels in time for the procedure. Our

doctor will recommend a clear liquid diet for at least 24 hours before the exam.

Avoid drinks that use red or purple dye. Instead, consume fat-free broth, strained fruit juice, water, plain coff ee or tea, sports drinks and gelatin. You always wanted an excuse to eat Jell-O for days, right?

The evening before the colonoscopy, you will take a prescription laxative, usually a liquid, that cleanses the bow-els. This is the most unpleasant part of the process, some people say. Invest in a good book and quality toilet paper. It’s important to follow our doctor’s prep instructions to ensure that the colonoscopy can be performed safely and successfully. If I’m not clean, our doctor might not be able to see polyps—and that’s the whole point, remember?

Our BIG DAYGood news: You won’t remember much about the colonoscopy. Before the pro-cedure, you’ll be lightly sedated and maybe given pain medication to help you fully relax. They’re strong drugs, so make sure to arrange a ride home.

A tube will then be inserted inside the anus, through the rectum and then through me, the colon. A camera on the scope will provide a picture to the doctor. I’m not bad-looking, if I do say so myself.

When the tube gets to the small intestine, the doctor will start to remove the device and take a second look on the way out. This whole pro-cess takes 15 minutes to an hour.

Any polyps that are found can be removed right then and there, and be sent to be biopsied for cancer cells. Any weird-looking tissues in me can be looked at, too.

You know, 90 percent of colorectal cancers are found in you people over 50. Start getting me checked then. The young’uns aren’t off the hook, though. If there’s a history of colon or rectal can-cer in their families, getting screened at an earlier age isn’t a bad idea.

Fear FactorScared of colorectal cancer screenings? You’re not alone.

“Fear comes from a lack of edu-cation,” says Beaufort Memorial Lowcountry Medical Group’s Bonnie Mohler, a nurse practitioner specializing in gastroenterology. “A lot of people don’t understand the process and are afraid of where the scope goes.”

Men are often more concerned with modesty than their female coun-terparts. Mohler says women are less embarrassed and skittish because of their gynecologic experience.

A lot of people think that if they don’t have a family history, they’re in the clear. But according to statistics, only 10 to 20 percent of colorectal cancer patients have relatives who had the disease.

In one study, African-Americans were most likely to avoid getting screened. That’s especially concerning because they are diagnosed with and die from colorectal cancer at higher rates than other ethnic groups. Experts recom-mend they begin screening at age 45 instead of 50.

People also dread the bowel prep required before the screening.

“It’s not pleasant, but it doesn’t last very long,” Mohler says.

Got (too Much) Milk?Sure, milk does the body good. But how much of a good thing is too much?

A recent study associates a high intake of milk with higher risk of heart disease and can-cer. In fact, women who drank three or more glasses daily had twice the risk of heart disease and a 44 percent higher risk of cancer compared with women who drank less than one glass per day.

While the findings are from a single study and too preliminary to trigger a change in nutritional guidelines, further research into the role of milk sugars, such as lactose and galactose, may be on the horizon. Genetic differences may dictate who can and can’t digest milk easily.

However, 2.7 pounds outpaces the general population’s weight gain nearly sixfold. Thus, freshman year does seem to be a critical juncture for weight management.

A study published in the Journal of Hospital Infection found that air-blown hand dryers spread more germs than paper towel dispensers. In fact, high-powered jet dryers created bacterial levels in the air that were 27 times higher than bacteria levels around paper towel dispensers. Ew.

FALSE. While researchers fast and furiously study the health eff ects of “vaping,” red fl ags are emerging.

For example, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration warns that e-cigarettes may contain toxic ingredients. (One FDA-studied sample contained diethylene glycol, a toxic chemical used in antifreeze.) Consumers have no way of knowing which harmful chemicals—and at what doses—they are inhaling.

Furthermore, the FDA warns that e-cigarettes can increase nicotine addiction among young people and encourage them to try real cigarettes. At press time, a study showed that 16 million kids in 10 states and the District of Columbia can legally buy e-cigarettes.

Instead, you need to use a product that will clear the pores of dead skin cells and oil. The AAD recommends products with benzoyl peroxide or sali-cylic acid. If you have dry skin, choose a cream or lotion. Oily skin? Look for a gel or solution.

If you don’t find a fix with an over-the-counter product, talk to a dermatologist. Almost all cases of acne are treatable.

“What the SPF doesn’t tell you is how much protection from UVA you’re getting. UVA rays are the ones that come right through win-dows and clouds,” Herschenfeld says. “Look for the term ‘broad spectrum’ or the ingredient zinc on the label. Those words indicate it also protects against UVA.”

True or false:Bathing in milk soothes eczema.

True. Milk has been found to reduce skin inflammation, like the kind associated with eczema. It can also be soothing as a compress on a sunburned area. But bathing in a tub of 2 percent isn’t necessary, Herschenfeld says. Look for bath products that contain oatmeal or milk and are intended for such use. n

4 Hit the vitamin store. Although most nutrients come from the foods you eat, experts recommend taking a prenatal vitamin before you attempt to get pregnant. “Folic acid and iron are the primary things you want in a prenatal supple-ment,” Filer says. Because the first eight weeks of pregnancy are criti-cal for the baby’s development, it’s important to start taking these before conception to ensure your system is well-stocked.

5 Make over your meals—and other habits, too. If you drink alcohol or smoke, now’s the time to stop. “This is also a good time to evaluate your caf-feine intake and ramp up the amount of fruits, veggies, fiber and water in your diet,” Filer says. If you are over- or under-weight, talk to your doctor about the best way to reach a weight that’s healthy for you and the baby. Excess weight during pregnancy is associated with complications includ-ing high blood pressure, pre-eclampsia, preterm birth and

gestational diabetes, while being underweight

increases the risk of having a low-birth-weight baby. n

2 Check the family tree. Do you have underlying medi-cal conditions like diabetes, seizures or thyroid disease? Are there genetic conditions in the family history? “If possible, it’s a good idea to sit down and map out who had what and look for patterns. Sometimes, that war-rants genetic counseling and possible blood tests, but more often than not, it’s a typical health history,” Filer says.

3 Get off the pill. It seems obvious, but if you’ve been on birth control, it can take a few months for your body to reset for pregnancy. Filer adds, “If you have an IUD, that will need to be removed by your doctor, and if you’ve been get-ting Depo-Provera shots, those will take even longer to get out of your system.”

your antenna to potential hazards. While toxins aren’t necessarily lurk-

ing in most homes and offices, there are a few things you’ll need to avoid, says OB-GYN Berniece Redmond, MD, of Beaufort Memorial Obstetrics & Gynecology Specialists.

“No hot tubs early in your pregnancy,” she says. “And no

luncheon meats or unpasteurized cheeses because of the risk of listeria.”

She suggests wearing rubber gloves when using certain products. Redmond also provides her patients with the FDA’s brochure on what fish and shell-fish contain high levels of mercury, which may harm an unborn baby.

bouts of diarrhea lately, but sometimes when you feel the urge to go, noth-ing happens. IS IT: Irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) or inflammatory bowel disease (IBD)?

IBD. Inflammatory bowel disease, which includes crohn’s disease and ulcerative colitis, shares some symptoms with irritable bowel syndrome, including diar-rhea and stomach cramping. unlike Ibs, however, IbD can lead to more serious complications and even cancer. a good distinguishing symptom between the two, rajapaksa says, is feeling a strong urge to go but only passing gas or a small stool. “that’s actually a sign there’s inflamma-tion in the colon,” she says. “It’s that swelling that makes you feel like some-thing needs to come out.”

Q Lately, your meals never seem to agree with you. after you eat, you often feel a burning pain in your

chest and throat.IS IT: Gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) or an ulcer?

GERD. people often confuse GerD and ulcer symptoms, but there are key dif-ferences. ulcer pain tends to be gnaw-ing and doesn’t travel toward the throat the way the effects of GerD do. GerD’s acid can leave you with a sour taste in your mouth and a sore throat. “Generally speaking, ulcers you feel more when you’re hungry; acid reflux you feel more after you’ve eaten,” rajapaksa explains.

Q You can’t go No. 2. at all. It’s been four days, and you’re quite uncomfortable. you can pass gas,

but that’s about it.IS IT: Constipation or an intestinal obstruction?

CoNSTIpaTIoN. the ability to pass gas indicates constipation, which can be relieved with fiber, stool softeners and exercise. an intestinal obstruction prevents even gas from getting through, and nausea, vomiting and a distended abdomen usually accompany the con-dition. an obstruction is very serious because of the risk of the bowel burst-ing, potentially causing a life-threatening infection, rajapaksa says.

With their vibrant color and concentric-patterned flesh, there’s no denying

that these root vegetables are stun-ning specimens. but an impressive array of nutrients and satisfying sweetness are the real reasons you shouldn’t skip a beet.

“beets are practically the most nutritious thing in the world,” says registered dietitian sara haas, a spokeswoman for the Academy of nutrition and dietetics. beets con-tain antioxidants, potassium, folate, vitamin c and many other nutrients.

If you’re training for a 5k, consider adding beets to your diet: A study by researchers at st. Louis university showed that after eating baked beets, runners increased their speed by 3 percent, shaving 41 seconds off their race times.

And luckily, you can get your beet fix almost anytime. though they tend to peak in spring and fall, these hearty veggies grow year-round in mild climates. try these three ways to prepare them.

1 ROAST THEMthis is the best way to coax out beets’ inherent

sweetness. slice off the green tops, leaving about a 1-inch stem. Wrap each beet in foil and bake at 400 F for about 50 minutes (until they can be eas-ily pierced with a fork). Allow beets to cool, then remove skins with paper towels. slice, then toss with balsamic vinaigrette and toasted walnuts.

2 ADD THEM TO SALAD Follow the directions for roasting through the

step in which skins are removed. slice beets thinly and toss them with arugula (or another green), man-darin oranges, goat cheese and a homemade vinai-grette (try sherry vinegar, dijon mustard, olive oil and honey). the key to a successful beet salad is the balance of sweet, sharp and sour flavors.

3 MAKE BEET CHIPSdo your kids wrinkle their noses at beets? try

transforming them into something fun and familiar. the basic idea: thinly slice beets to one-sixteenth of an inch thick using a mandoline and toss with olive oil. cook them at 350 F for about 30 minutes on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper. After 20 minutes, watch carefully—chips are done when the edges start to dry and curl and the color lightens. n

gynecologists can offer patients

relief from period pain

Ah, the menstrual cycle. It’s the curse of being female.But for some women, that dreaded time of the month is much more

than an inconvenience. It’s incapacitating.Dee Simpson’s periods had been causing her trouble since she was in

her mid-20s. Birth control pills made them manageable for a while, but the severe pain and bleeding returned when she stopped taking contraceptives.

“The world would stop for five days every month,” says the 42-year-old, who is the program director of Marine Corps Family Team Building at the recruit depot on Parris Island. “It disrupted my work and my personal life.” >

When Aunt Flo was visiting, Simpson couldn’t even think about joining her husband, Joe, on their usual weekend boating trips. Rather than soak up the sun on the sandy beach at Bay Point—their favorite boating destination—she would stay home in unrelenting pain.

Over the years, Simpson tried just about every medication on the market that promised relief from the cramping, bloating and bleeding of menstruation. Nothing worked.

“I assumed it is what it is and I just had to suck it up,” she says. “It’s part of being a girl. Congratulations!”

Last year in exasperation, she finally went to her physician at Naval Hospital Beaufort and pleaded for help. She was given three options: get back on contra-ception, have an endometrial ablation or undergo a hysterectomy.

“I didn’t want to be on medication I didn’t need,” she says. “And the doctor told me the ablation was a temporary fix. So I went for the hysterectomy.”

The One and OnlyThe naval doctor referred Simpson to Claude Tolbert, MD, at Beaufort Memorial Obstetrics & Gynecology Specialists. Tolbert determined she had adenomyosis. Endometrial tissue that normally lines the uterus had grown into the muscular wall of the uterus.

“It’s very difficult to treat,” Tolbert says. “You can delay the inevitable by taking hormones or using an intrauter-ine device (IUD), but ultimately you’ll need a hysterectomy.”

Because Simpson was in good health, Tolbert suggested a robot-assisted single-site hysterectomy. Using the advanced da Vinci Si Surgical System, he removed Simpson’s uterus through one small incision in the navel, speed-ing up healing and leaving her with virtually no scar.

She spent one night in the hospital and the next three days relaxing at home. Pain medication took care of the soreness in her belly.

“I expected the recovery to be way worse, but it was fantastic—dare I say almost pleasant!” raves Simpson, who had the surgery in January. “The only regret I have is that I waited so long to have it done.”

When Less Is MoreLike Simpson, Janet Cleland was fed up with her troublesome menstrual cycles. The debilitating symptoms kept her from hiking, biking, kayaking and doing all the other outdoor activities she enjoys.

“I was just miserable,” the 53-year-old Beaufort resident recalls. “I had profuse bleeding and I never knew when it was going to start, so I couldn’t do anything.”

Cleland began having period prob-lems 10 years ago. On several occasions, the bleeding was so severe, she became anemic and nearly needed a blood transfusion. The culprit was fibroids. Pat Thompson, MD, of Gynecology Associates of Beaufort, removed the benign tumors, and Cleland went back to having normal menstrual cycles.

Then two years ago, the bleeding increased again.

“I thought it was going to be the same issue, but it turned out a fibroid had

gone through the wall of my uterus,” she says. “I needed a hysterectomy. I was devastated.”

When Thompson suggested single-site da Vinci surgery, the mother of two jumped at the chance to have one incision instead of the typical four or five required for traditional laparoscopic surgery.

“I’m very vain,” Cleland admits. “I work out and try to stay in shape. Hiding the incision in the belly button appealed to me.”

But fibroids were only part of the problem. Once inside her abdomen, Thompson discovered Cleland had endometriosis, multiple fibroids and cysts on both ovaries.

“I had everything in there but a baby,” Cleland quips.

Rather than the usual 90 minutes in the OR, it took Thompson five hours to perform the complex surgery.

“The da Vinci’s wristed instruments make hard cases easier,” says Thompson, one of four Beaufort Memorial sur-geons trained to perform the state-of-the-art surgery. “You can get around unusual angles and tight spaces. It’s much more difficult to do that with the straight sticks used in traditional lapa-roscopic surgery.”

In addition to offering more precise control and increased articulation, the robot is equipped with 3-D high defini-tion optics, offering 10 times the magni-fication of the operative field.

“It’s amazing what she was able to do through one tiny hole,” says Cleland, who had the surgery last fall. “She took out my cervix, my uterus, everything from A to Z. It was a miracle I had no scar after all that. And I only had to stay in the hospital overnight.”

Up and RunningDebbie Wright felt so good after her da Vinci hysterectomy, she went home the same day of her surgery and was

up early the next morning cleaning her kitchen.

“It was nothing like my mom’s open hysterectomy,” the 45-year-old Port Royal resident says. “I didn’t even have to take sick leave [from work].”

The mother of three had been suffer-ing with heavy menstrual bleeding for five years.

“I had to use an ultra-absorbent tampon and pad and change them every hour,” recalls Wright, an associate director at the College of Charleston. “I didn’t want to go anywhere. I would just stay in my room near the bathroom.”

On one particularly bad month, she nearly fainted inside a Walmart. A physician at an urgent care center told her she was so anemic she would

require an IV infusion of iron and daily iron supplements.

Her gynecologist performed an endometrial ablation, which helped reduce the amount of bleeding. Then last September, while being treated for a kidney stone, doctors discovered Wright’s uterus had become enlarged.

At that point, she went to see Gregory Miller, MD, of Beaufort Memorial Obstetrics & Gynecology Specialists. He found multiple fibroids in her uterus and a cyst on her ovary nearly as big as a baseball.

“I knew what was coming and I was ready for it,” Wright says. “My mother had a hysterectomy when she was in her 40s, and my sister, who is three years younger than I am, was getting ready to have one, too.”

Using the da Vinci, Miller removed Wright’s uterus, ovaries and fallopian tubes through four small incisions in the abdomen. The surgery went so well, Wright was discharged from the hospital later that afternoon.

“She had such a great attitude about the surgery,” Miller says. “She wanted to get it done and start living her life again.” n

Bill Farrar couldn’t wait to return to the game he loves—and he hardly had to. Three months after his surgery, he was ready to hit the links despite a second knee that was scheduled for replacement later in the year.

B ill Farrar was in his late 40s when he fi rst started hearing from his knees.

“The pain was fairly mild back then and would last just a few days,” Farrar recalls. “I could treat it with ibuprofen.”

Over the next decade, his knees turned up the volume. He heard them loud and clear in 2001 while spending a long weekend in Myrtle Beach.

“After three days of playing golf, my knees were so sore my wife had to drive us home to Virginia,” says the retired attorney, now living on Lady’s Island. “The pain was constant.”

An orthopedist diagnosed osteo-arthritis. To relieve the pain, Farrar was treated with Synvisc, an injection that supplements the fl uid in your knee to help lubricate and cushion the joint.

“It’s like getting an oil change for your knees,” he says.

Over the next seven years, he received two more rounds of Synvisc. And then the pain began to aff ect his life seri-ously. It hindered his mobility during the 77-day trip he took with his wife to Sydney, Australia, the South Pacifi c Islands and Hong Kong.

“There were a lot of things I wasn’t able to see because I couldn’t walk very far,” Farrar says. “The most diffi cult part was standing—after fi ve minutes I was in severe pain.”

Where the Rubber Meets the RoadLast fall, Farrar made an appointment with Edward Blocker, MD. The Beaufort Memorial orthopedist recommended a cortisone injection to his knee.

“We took the conservative route fi rst,” Blocker says. “I always say your knees will tell you when it’s time to fi x them.”

A few weeks later, Farrar’s knees gave him a shout.

“I had some apprehension about having knee replacement surgery, but why should I live the rest of my life in pain because I’m afraid?” Farrar says. “I’m 72 years old and only have X num-ber of years left.”

Surgery on his right knee was scheduled for Dec. 1. After attending Beaufort Memorial’s joint replace-ment class led by Orthopedic Care Coordinator Andrea Sadler, Farrar had lost all his fear.

“The class was the greatest thing,” he says. “Andrea demystifi ed every-thing. She told us exactly how it was going to happen almost minute by minute before, during and after the surgery. She was straightforward and honest and answered every question.”

Advanced MedicineWhile it’s no walk in the park, recover-ing from knee replacement surgery has become less painful in the last three years with the development of new surgical strategies and medications.

“At the end of the surgery, we inject a cocktail of Novocain-type medicines all around the knee that numbs the pain for three days,” Blocker says. “The dressing we use has silver impregnated in it that allows us to leave it on the wound for four or fi ve days, reducing the risk of infection.”

Instead of staples, Blocker uses dis-solvable stitches and skin glue over the incision. As a result, there is little or no drainage after the surgery.

Farrar was so happy with his new right knee, he scheduled replacement surgery for his left knee six months later.

“My life is so much more enjoyable now,” Farrar says. “We’re ready to start traveling again.” �

MOVING WITH A MISSION

There’s no sugarcoating it: Recovering from joint replacement surgery is tough going. But that doesn’t mean it can’t be fun.

Beaufort Memorial’s innovative Joint Replacement Center (JRC) off ers patients state-of-the-art orthopedic care in a set-ting designed to make patients feel more like resort guests than invalids.

Hours after their surgery, they can ditch their hospital gowns and dress in their own clothes. They’re encouraged to get out of bed as soon as possible and walk the fl oor to destination stations fea-turing fun activities like a putting green and a cornhole toss.

On their second day at the center, they begin group physical and occupational therapy. The friendly competition has been shown to motivate patients to work harder, resulting in better outcomes.

At the end of their stay patients have a celebration with their fellow patients, and they take home souvenirs that include a JRC T-shirt and a starfi sh from a local chocolatier.

CARING FOR THE YOUNGAND THEIR COMMUNITYFor Chip and Pam Floyd, improving life for Beaufort’s children has long been a way of life

Chip Floyd, MD, and his wife, Pam, fi rst fell in love with Beaufort when he was

stationed at Naval Hospital Beaufort 35 years ago. It wasn’t long before they knew they wanted to make their home here. They’ve always loved hiking, bik-ing and the great outdoors, and they believed Beaufort would be the perfect place to raise their family.

When Floyd completed his military service in 1982, he jumped at the chance to join Francis Rushton, MD, at Beaufort Pediatrics. As the fi rst two pediatricians in town, they were committed to build-ing a community-based practice whose doors were open to everyone—a philos-ophy they shared with the not-for-profi t Beaufort Memorial Hospital across the street. “Patients have always come fi rst, and everyone receives the same high level of care, regardless of ability to pay,” the pediatrician proudly says of both institutions.

Growing Community, Growing PracticeOver the intervening decades, he has seen his patients grow up, using hospital or emergency room services when they needed to and returning to him with their own children and even grandchildren for care. His practice has grown with the

community, from two physician partners to seven, with a staff that he considers top notch and a joy to work with, each and every one.

All the while, the Floyds have been active church and community volunteers, committed to helping others and helping Beaufort become the place we all know and love. And their own family has grown to include three children, their spouses and two cherished grandchildren.

When their second grandchild was born at Beaufort Memorial last year, it brought to mind how far the hospital has come since Floyd started his prac-tice. “The hospital nursery was the size of a large closet and contained only two dilapidated warmers back then,” he recalls. “There was no way to even keep the newborns warm.”

FOUNDATION-BUILDING

But thanks to the BMH Foundation, the nursery—and its tiny residents—had three brand-new warmers in as many weeks, and that was only the beginning. Within a few years, the hos-pital had expanded and upgraded the facility so much that it achieved a cov-eted Level II designation.

Floyd is grateful that the nursery at Beaufort Memorial has been “a place where our community’s youngest patients have received excellent pedi-atric and neonatal care ever since.” And he credits as well a long and close working relationship with Charleston’s Medical University of South Carolina, the region’s tertiary-care center, with helping to ensure seamless care for the children most in need.

Continued SupportHis advocacy for Beaufort Memorial has been an integral part of its success. He has served on the hospital’s board of trustees and was chief of staff during Hurricane Hugo and its aftermath, not-ing how quickly the hospital responded to what could have been a local disas-ter and how much its preparedness has grown in the last quarter-century.

As a couple, he and Pam have hosted Duke Symphony Orchestra students for all 12 years of the concert fundraiser.

They also chaired one of the fi rst Valentine Balls and have hosted more than 20 pre-ball dinner parties together. “We really look forward to the ball every year, as we get to reconnect with old friends and meet new ones,” says Pam.

The Foundation’s 2007 Valentine Ball was especially meaningful to the Floyds, because all of its proceeds were dedi-cated to Beaufort Memorial HealthLink for Children. Today the facility is bright, cheerful and well equipped. What’s more, Dr. Floyd is proud of the range of services his special-needs patients receive there, everything from occupa-tional/speech/physical therapy to social services and counseling. “With the help of those Valentine Ball funds and others from the Foundation, HealthLink for Children has become an excellent, star-rated program,” he says, citing this as another instance when community sup-port has made a signifi cant diff erence in patient care.

“I depend on the hospital for my patients and my family, and I’ve been grateful that we have a strong hos-pital supported by the community,” says Floyd. “It’s easy to support BMH, because it’s our hospital.” �

LifeFit Wellness Center—Beaufort’s only medically supervised exercise facility—

continues to improve by leaps and bounds, thanks in large part to commun­ity support through the BMH Foundation. With more than 17,000 square feet of space, LifeFit Wellness offers a wide array of equipment and classes. But what really sets the center apart are the individualized health services provided by its medical professionals.

LifeFit’s programs both help those diagnosed with a chronic disease lead fuller lives and improve the health of the broader community.

disease management programs, not to mention every piece of equip­ment in the new facility. “Because of that vision, Beaufort Memorial has become in effect a change agent for our community.”

One of the most popular CHiP pro­grams is the mobile wellness unit, a 40­foot van that travels throughout the Lowcountry offering much­needed health screenings to area residents. A nurse practitioner is available to per­form free physical, breast and prostate exams as well as skin cancer screen­ings. Blood sugar tests for diabetes and blood pressure testing for hypertension are also provided free of charge, while cholesterol tests and prostate blood work cost a nominal $10 each.

Last year the mobile unit screened 3,629 people at more than 144 events in Beaufort and Jasper counties. “It’s been a very successful program,” says Jason Meyer, LifeFit’s senior mobile wellness specialist. “What I love most about my job is being able to meet so many people throughout our great community—and knowing that I’m giv­ing them screenings that could poten­tially change or even save their lives.” n

Foundation-Building

The Community Health Improvement Program (CHiP) provides transitional care for recently discharged patients. A cardiac and pulmonary rehabilitation program, prenatal classes, community health fairs, a Diabetes Care Center and educational outreach provide services for the full spectrum of chronic condi­tions, from cancer to asthma.

“The Foundation provided the fund­ing to make the vision of a comprehen­sive wellness and prevention service possible,” says LifeFit Senior Director Mark Senn. To date, the Foundation has generated nearly $2.5 million in sup­port of community health and chronic
