But when Moore srung the golf club, he had actually strained his piriformis, a muscle deep in the buttock that is in direct contact with * and is often bisectcd by - the sciatic nerve. Whcreas nuscle strains usually cause local- ized pain, an inflamed piriformis can push on the sciatic nerve and cause severe pain to radiate to the legs. Ti-I Fl IrlX Moore was o{lered the standard treatment: a round ofsteroid injections to reduce general inflammation. This helped for a while, but in September - with no par- ticular trigger that Moore can recall - the pain recurred. Moore's doctor oliered an- other round of injections, but Moore, who tries to avoid even ibuprofen, declined, instead opting for an intense stretching regimen known as active release tcch- niques (see below).
