Cyborg SportTheir pre-workout booster took a serious sales hit when the TGA (Australia’s equivalent
of the FDA) banned DMAA in dietary supplements. The CEO, Marcus Eeson, came
to us with guidance on how to come up with a hard hitting, clinically effective workout
supplement sans DMAA. After consulting with our research team led by Dr. Sunnie
Sun (school) and Dr. Thomas Yang (Southwestern Medical, University of Texas), we
presented several alternative formulations, balancing cost & efficacy. In the end, Marcus
wanted the most potent product possible, regardless of cost. His new launch has been
a great success and current sales are almost back to pre-banned figures.

dosage levels, users often report mental
clarity and a slight mental buzz, similar to
what a person would feel with a large cup
of coffee.
VerbascosidesA little known but very promising botanical sugar ester with topical and oral skin care applications. Kostvuk V. et al study on verbascoside
showed that the polyphenol can interfere with the UV signaling in skin cells, thereby modulating the response of skin cells to UV radiation.
Originating from the Lamiales plant family or cultivated from stem cells of Leucosceptrum sp, pure verbascosides retails for $86,900 a
kilogram! Our verbascosides come in concentrations of 10% to 50%.
APPENDIXAstraGin™Arginine UptakeIn measuring the transport of arginine or tryptophan
across the Caco-2 cell monolayer, both sides of
the transwells were washed with incubation buffer.
Then, the cell monolayer was preincubated in the
incubation buffer at 37ºC for 1 h and replaced with
fresh incubation medium right before transport
experiment. The transport experiment was initiated
by replacing the incubation solution on the apical
side with solution containing 10 mM of L-arginine or
L-tryptophan in which 0.125 μCi/mL of L-[3H]-arginine
or L-[3H]-tryptophan was included.
Citrulline UptakeResults of the citrulline uptake assay indicated that the absorption of citrulline in Caco-2 cells incubated with
AstraGin™ are higher than the Caco-2 cells not incubated with AstraGin™ . The absorption was 17% higher
at 0.5h, peaked at 45% at 1h, and tapered off to 6% at 4h and much less till 24h (data not shown). The AUC
(area under curve) of citrulline during 0.5-4.0h in the AstraGin™ group was significantly elevated by 25%
when compared to control group. Windmuller’s published study demonstrated that the small intestine releases
citrulline (CIT), which is mainly taken up by the kidney and metabolized into arginine (ARG). Citrulline is not
taken up by the liver. This ARG-CIT-ARG cycle can be seen as a means of protecting dietary arginine from liver
degradation and of sustaining protein homeostasis.
At designated time intervals, 10 μL-solution samples were removed from the basolateral side and radioactivity of each sample was counted using a microplate liquid scintillation
counter (TopCount, Packard NXT).
The uptake of [3H]-mannitol was used to correct for nonspecific transport of molecules across the monolayer membrane. Results are expressed as the steady-state rate of
arginine or tryptophan transport across (nanomoles per minute) across the Caco-2 monolayers in mean ± SD (n = 3-5). Differences between means of groups were assessed
by the t-test. Radiolabeling method was used to determine the amount of arginine and tryptophan absorbed/transported from outside into the Caco-2 cell membrane. Therefore,
more radioactivity across the Caco-2 cell membrane from apical side to the basal side indicates that more arginine or tryptophan was absorbed and transported. Relative
absorption rate is calculated based on total amount of arginine or tryptophan absorbed and transported in the first 10 minutes, the most efficient time period.

INCREASE ENERGY CATALYST CITRATE SYNTHASE BY 46%In a randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled, crossover study on 12 young males; aged 21.1±0.4 years; maximal oxygen
consumption (VO2max): 3.1±0.2 L/min., ActiGin™ increased mitochondria citrate synthase activity by 46% during the 3-h
recovery (P<0.05). Citrate synthase is a critical enzyme in human energy (ATP) production.
INCREASE MAXIMUM EXERCISE TIME TO EXHAUSTIONIn a randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled, crossover study on 12 young men; aged 21.1±0.4 years; maximal oxygen
consumption (VO2max): 3.1±0.2 L/min, ActiGin™ increased exercise time to exhaustion from 31.8±5.0 min to 38.3±6.7 min
(P<0.05) on a cycloergometer test at 80% VO2max.
DECREASE MUSCLE DAMAGE & INFLAMMATION12 college swimmers (20.3±0.2 years of age) were challenged with resistance training. Its
effects on muscle damage and oxidative damage markers were measured every morning
during a 4-day post-exercise recovery period. Increased MDA (Figure A), IL-6 (Figure B), and
creatine kinase (Figure C) in circulation were attenuated by daily intake of ActiGin™ during
recovery, compared to the Placebo. This is consistent with the In vivo study, suggest-ing
again that ActiGin™ can preserve cellular integrity under destructive stress from exercise.
INCREASE GLYCOGEN RECOVERY BY 370%In a randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled, crossover study on 12 young men; aged
22.0±0.3 years., ActiGin™ completely eliminated a 25% increase in TBARS (byproduct
of lipid peroxidation, Figure A) and increased their quadriceps muscle glycogen (Figure
B) amount by 370% three hours after a standardized 60-min exercise (70% VO2max).
Exercise-induced oxidative stress causes temporally membrane lipid peroxidation, which
can be protected by ActiGin™ by preserving GSH/GSSG ratio. Sarcolemma integrity is
essential for transmembrane glucose transport and normal insulin signaling. Normal insulin
signaling is required for triggering muscle glycogen synthesis.
