Listeria monocytogenes

Gram + bacilli Tumbling motility at 25C,nonmotile at 37C Saprophyte on soil ,water, sewage. Meningitis in neonates, elderly Abcess, conjunctivitis, pharyngitis, urithritis Anton Test -instillation into eyes of rabbits-

Keratoconjunctivitis Isolation-vaginal secr.,lochia,meconium,cord

blood,csf,blood.

Cold enrichment -materials stored in tryptose phosphate/thioglycolate broth at 4C,and subculture are done at weekly intervals forn 1-6 months

Isolates may be missed as diphtheroids Treatment

1. Ampicillin

2. Cotremoxazole

3. Gentamycin

Page 5: Other bacteria

Erysipelothrix rhusiopathiae

Gram + bacilli-nonmotile Cause swine erysipelas, human eryseipeloid Human infections in hands or fingers of

persons handling animals, fish Lesions are edematous, painful erythema Treatment

1. Penicillin

2. Erythromycin

Page 6: Other bacteria

Alcaligenes faecalis

Gram –ve bacilli—motile Saprophyte Cause

1. Typhoid like fever

2. UTI

3. Infentile gastro enteritis

Page 7: Other bacteria

Chromobacterium violaceum

Gram –ve bacilli-motile

Violet coloured pigment Skin lesions with pyemia and multiple abcess

Page 8: Other bacteria

Flavobacterium meningosepticum Gram-ve bacilli---nonmotile

Yellow pigment Meningitis in newborns

Page 9: Other bacteria

Gardenerella vaginalis Gram-ve bacilli- nonmotile Causes Bacterial vaginosis charecterised

by-1. Raised vaginal PH(>4.5)2. Foul smelling discharge3. Clue cells BV also by Mobilincus and bacteroids Clue cells –vaginal epithelial cells studded

with numerous bacteria Treatment Metronidazole

Donovania granulomatis Gram –ve bacilli---nonmotile Bipolar condensation of chromatin-closed safty

pin appearance Causes Donovanosis-painful papule on the

genitalia Treatment

1. Tetracyclin

Page 11: Other bacteria

Acinetobacter

Gram –ve bacilli ---nonmotile A.baumanni-pink colour on MA A.Lowffi-yellow colour on MA Iatrogenic meningitis

Page 12: Other bacteria

Rat bite Fever

Caused by streptobacillus moniliformis(gram-ve nonmotile) and spirillnum minus(g-ve bacillus –motile)

Rat bite may have healed-but it suppurates with fever and regional lymphadenopathy

Both types responds to

1. Penicilline

2. Tetracycline

Page 13: Other bacteria

Legionella pneumophilia

Gram –ve bacilli –motile Stains better with silver impregnation method Best visualised by direct immunofluroscent

antibody stain with monoclonal /polyclonal sera

Human infection –inhalation of aerosoles produced by cooling towers-AC,cause legionellosis

Page 14: Other bacteria

1. Legionnaire’s d/sfever ,nonproductive cough,dyspnoea,leading to pneumonia

2. Pontaic fever –nonfatal influenza like d/s.

Treatment

1. Macrolides

2. Ciprofloxacin

3. Tetracycline
