Patient experiences

As well as MS I also Suffer with Anklosing Spondylitis which gives me quite a lot of back pain. The MS itself was making me feel exceptionally tired & I was struggling with bad head aches & a recurring sinus issue. A treatment plan was put together for me & within 2 weeks of starting the treatment I was no longer waking up every morning with bad headaches. My energy levels were greatly improved & my backache was reduced.I would definitely recommend this treatment to other people. I have now purchased my own unit so that I can use it at home. I addition to the treatment plan I have also used the APS machine to combat menstrual pain very effectively. In summary using this machine in addition to leading a healthy lifestyle has helped me to stay active & continue to enjoy an active lifestyle.

How I got into pain !

In her own wordsnotes on progress of 4th week.Sleep improvements maintained although still wake frequently.Pain during day virtually gone.Pain at night much reduced now only troubling between 6-8am.Energy levels greatly improved. Much more stamina was able to withstand this hot spell very well.I can now easily get up from a chair even one without arms! And get up from the toilet.

I can lower myself gently down instead of flinging myself down.I can move around with ease and no longer have to plan everything I need to do. I can walk around the centre without a stick.I can stand long enough to do some housework and get myself some lunch. The electric shock feelings I was experiencing in the head have been getting less in frequency. The physio that I do in the group and in the pool have got better.I can stay on a gym ball for the whole session and the physio has noticed as improvement in my posture and walking.Mood- has elevated to new heights. I am delighted with the transformation I feel I am gettingme back. Maggie Harvey. MS for over 20 years.

AimTo help people relieve their painTo train healthcare practitioners Raise awarenessTo stimulate researchFor APS Therapy to take its place as a validated treatment for pain relief, available on the NHS.

2016 testimonialsI have better mobility, less fatigue and the MS hug has diminished. Am I completely cured of the MS symptoms? No, but I have a quality of life I have not known for a number of years. I was dreading retirement, thanks to APS at the Centre I am not just embracing my retirement but actively looking forward to it, with active being the operative word! I dont have to use a stick to walk, how wonderful, liberating and normal, not huge I know, butfeels so much more normal to carry a handbag than a stick! Jacqueline, Reading MS Therapy Centre, 2016

What is APS TherapyAPS Therapy machineAction Potential Simulation Safe, effective, drug free pain relief & injury repairSpecific wave form microcurrent electricity

HistoryDeveloped in early 1990s, south AfricaFirst machine treated shattered elbows successfullyProf Christian Barnard used for arthritis to keep working1993 1st serial machine MD in USA1994 FDA approval1998 CE approval ( Europe)1998 Gold award Geneva Medical International InventionMarketed without training in SA & UKMoved to Holland, model of training & therapistsInsurance, hospital clinics

How does it work?Specific waveform simulates Action Potentials

Real Action Potential

Action potentials

Action potentials

A series of biochemical reactions take place, lasting just thousandths of a secondElectrically charged molecules of sodium or potassium rush in and out of cells, as gates in the cell membranes open and closeWhen they get to certain concentrations, they trigger a electrical impulse, a firing and a depolarisation, sending a wave of information along to the next cell, and setting up for the next wave of action potential.

Action PotentialsThe change in electrical potential associated with the passage of an impulse along the membrane of a muscle cell or nerve cell

occur in nerve cells, muscles cells and endocrine cells

nerve impulses or as the cell firing.

Action Potentials

Boosting action potentials1) Communication between cells is enhanced = ++ removal of waste products, reduced inflammation2) Boosts production of ATP = speeds cellular repair and regeneration 3) Neuro-hormonal effects= contribute to pain relief and maximised healing 4) Effect on voltage gated sodium channels & pathways= may be why effective with long term neuropathic pain on maintenance.

Benefits to userPain reliefBetter quality of sleepEnhanced energyFaster injury repairImproved recovery time after exerciseAlso reported:Improved mobilityReduced spasms in MSCessation of recurrent UTIsReduction in medication useImproved wellbeing

2016 testimonialsBy the end of the first week, my walking was better noticed by others who know my usual unsteady gait. My hip pain was reduced, meaning I didnt need to take the daily tramadol as much, missing it completely on most days. I am sure it has improved the quality of my sleep. The MAJOR, MAJOR benefit is with my fatigue.I have had fatigue pretty much all of the time, to differing levels, for some time. With a lot of family health problems this year it been worse than ever.BUT the fatigue levels have been dropping and I am aware I have more energy.I am able to focus more (I can now concentrate to read and enjoy a book).I am able to do more around the house and am more alert and staying out later when socialising. The APS has been quite transformational for my fatigue - Ros, Reading MS Therapy Centre 2016

1) Assists cellular communicationAssists removal of waste products

Decongests area from products of inflammation

Reducing inflammation

Sports injury before, during, 5, & 10 minutes post APS Therapy

2. ATP & neuro-hormone productionstorage and distribution vehicles of energy

adenosine, ribose, and three molecules of phosphate.Energy is released when the phosphate bond is broken.Function: convert glucose, from food, into energy.more ATP = better function and more energy

Electron Transport Chain

By simulating the electron transport chain, production of ATP is boosted28

Neuro-hormonal effects

Melatonin: significantly raised sedative, anxiolytic, local vasodilation & anticoagulation, limitation of tissue damage at sites of inflammation due to the effects on prostaglandins and free oxygen radicals.Leukine enkephalin: progressively increasedEffective analgesic due to interaction with opioid receptors as well as inhibition of substance P (the neurotransmitter responsible for pain transmission). Limitation of tissue damage at sites of inflammation and/or hypoxia. Increase in pulse rate and systemic blood pressure, associated with peripheralvasodilation, which results in better perfusion at the affected areas. -

Neuro-hormonalBeta-endorphins: significantly decreasedFeelgood hormone produced at times of stress.

Cortisol: unchanged but uninhibitedstress hormone harmful when chronic over production, necessary in short term for performance, esp. high level. Inhibited in the presence of beta-endorphins.

Jackie after 4 weeksBefore I started the treatment I had the MS hug really badly. Most of the time the pain score was 5/10, but at times it was 11/ 10! Since I started the APS Therapy I havent had the really bad pain at all and most of the time the pain score is around 3.5/10, too low to notice. I also had knee pain, which was about 4.5/10 on the pain scale, and 7/10 when bad. Again, since having this treatment I havent had the bad pain at all and the pain score has gone down to around 3/10. The fact that I no longer notice pain shows the improvement. Its just so nice not to have to constantly think about pain. This treatment has also had a real impact on my sleep and fatigue. I usually wake up four or five times a night with pain, but last week I only woke once. Also, I dont have that overwhelming feeling of tiredness. Last week I did so much! I took my brother on holiday, which involved so much walking. Normally, I would have been exhausted, but I just wasnt. My numbness is less noticeable too.Jackie Clarke, Luton

ResearchA 2015 randomised controlled trial comparing APS Therapy with Interferential ( another micro-current therapy) found significant reductions in both VAS and WOMAC ( arthritic symptoms) in both groups using only 10 treatments; Timed Up and Go was also reduced in the APS Therapy group.(8)-Eftekharasadat, B, Babaei-Ghazani, A., Habibzadeh,A.,Kolahi,B.(2015) Efficacy of action potential simulation and interferential therapy in the rehabilitation of patients with knee osteoarthritis.Therapeutic Advances in MusculoSkeletal disease 7(3): 6775.

A study in 1999 on APS Therapy compared with TENS in 99 patients with osteoarthritis of the knee did not find a significant difference given just 6 treatments over a 2 week period. Noted that the APS group showed a significant improvement in measures of knee flexion and swelling, which persisted even 1 month after the last treatment. - Odendaal & Joubert APS Therapy- a new way of treating chronic backache, a pilot studySouth African Journal of Anaesthesiology and Analgesia.1999;51

Research in APSAn assessment of APS Therapy on 285 Patients with Chronic Pain in 2002 reported a mean average VAPS was 6.8 before treatment and 3.3 after treatment in the over 50s, and 6.3 and 2.2 respectively in the under 50s. Out of the 285 patients,44 (15%) ended with a 0 VAPS and 199 (69%) with a score of 5 or less.-Papendorp DH van. (2002). Assessment of Pain Relief on 285 patients with chronic pain. Biomedical Research2002;26:249-253.

A trial of APS Therapy in patients awaiting or having neurosurgery for intractable spinal pain concluded that the number of patients treated was too low to reach a statistical conclusion, but that the trend was very promising and they recommended that patients waiting for destructive surgery should first be put on a thorough trial of APS Therapy.(2)- Du Preez, J. Neurosurgical Pain Conditions, University of Pretoria

ResearchIn a 1999 randomized, patient blinded, placebo-controlled study, on 76 patients with chronic osteoporotic back pain, reported pretreatment baseline VAPS value average of of 57.79, and post- treatment value after the sixth treatment of 9.7 (p= 0,0001); 6 patients maintained benefits 6 months post treatment.(3)-Berger, P. Of 38 people who completed an 8 week course of APS Therapy:

Of 61 pains that the 38 people had:

Of the 50 pains that improved;

Improvement

Counted as 1 whole point on the VAS

Average improvement overall was 4.7 points

12 people reduced or discontinued medication

Could have been more, hadnt planned

14 Neuropathic pain in feet & legsAverage VAS pre: 6.3 Average post: 2.5

Worst pain in neuropathic feet & legs

Other neurogenic & nerve pain

Joint pain & injury

Pre mean 5.1 post mean 2.2. Actual results quite polarised
