Recovering from a Miscarriage
In the United States, nearly a quarter of all pregnancies end in miscarriage every year. While this statistic is a sobering one, it does mean that individuals and couples dealing with pregnancy loss are not alone, and can draw on a variety of resources for support and advice.
Recovering from a Miscarriage
Following a miscarriage, both partners should allow themselves time to heal, both physically and emotionally. Because of the physical facts of pregnancy loss, men and women will respond to the grieving process differently; both partners should give themselves permission to feel what they feel while respecting the other’s emotions, acknowledging differences, and keeping communication open. Though it is not always easy to ask for help, counseling can be a useful option for couples who are having difficulty coping with their loss together.
Recovering from a Miscarriage
Physically, hormonal changes can continue to affect women for one or two months following a miscarriage. Before trying to conceive again, a woman should take time to rebuild her strength and get as healthy as possible. It can also be a good idea to let the body experience one or two normal menstrual periods so as to know, for pregnancy test purposes, when a period is late. Couples who have experienced a miscarriage do not necessarily have underlying fertility problems, but many find it reassuring to consult a doctor or specialist, particularly after several consecutive miscarriages.
