The Name….

Sweet Water Sustainability InstituteThe lands that would eventually be Sweetwater are noted in a grant of reservation to Issac Vann

in "Sweet Water" dated July 10, 1817, from the Cherokee Agency of the Office of Indian Affairs.*

Sweethaving the taste of sugar, fragrant, fresh, pleasant in sound and amiable

Water"Water" flows, it supports life, it sustains life.

SustainabilitySustainability was selected because each of the five tenets of SWSI, wellness,

agriculture, personal growth, creative expression and sustainable living ALL sustain us in our human experience.

Institute...the size, scope and magnitude of the campus and the beautiful historic buildings

commanded nothing less than a word that enveloped something quite so grand!
