Bitter Melon (Momordica charantia )
Functions: The fruit of M. charantia is commonly known as the bitter melon or the bitter gourd because of its bitter taste. The fruit is oblong and resembles a cucumber. The fruit is emerald green when young and turns to orange-yellow upon ripening. Bitter Melon is one of the most popular cooked vegetables in many Asian countries. Its experimental use in mice has indicated improvement in glucose tolerance against Type II diabetes and reduction in blood cholesterol.
