Tooth Decay Tooth Decay is the destruction of your teeth, usually from the production of acid by bacteria that feeds on food accumulated on the surface of your teeth.

This "acid attack" causes tooth decay and cavities to begin to form.

Decay that has spread into the nerve of the tooth. Usually accompanied with severe toothache. Root Canal or extraction is needed here.

Decay that has spread into dentine and must be treated (with a filling). The Decay may not cause any symptoms at this stage.

When you get a filling the dentist removes the decayed part of the tooth and replace it with one of several dental filling materials.
