We have successfully navigated another academic year and summer is here. For those of you attending summer session, we’re glad you are here seeking to balance with those academic challenges with some fitness, recreation, and stress management.

Guess What…we’ve been listening and for the first time in our history, we have added summer weekend hours! On a trial basis this summer we have added Saturdays and Sundays Noon to 8 p.m. to the SRC operation hours for the 8 weeks of Summer Session. There are some exceptions for holidays and late summer weekends so pick up an Open Recreation Hours card at the SRC Welcome Desk for all the specific information.

Faculty and Staff, did you know we lower the age for your dependants in the summer to age 16? This means if you have an older high schooler or college

age student home for the summer, you can purchase a membership for him/her to use the REC whether or not you are a member yourself.

Family Recreation extends in the summer to all REC operational hours. Pick up the flyer at the Welcome Desk for details.

Once each year we must close for a 2 week period for major maintenance. We save all those projects that require draining the pool, that produce noxious fumes (such as gym floor refinishing), and that cause major disruption of activity spaces for that time. This summer we will be closed for maintenance August 15-26.

Here’s wishing each of you a safe, fun filled and healthy summer!

NEW!Aqua Zumba, Outdoor Boot Camp, Personal Training,

Women’s Only Weight Room Hours, and more!

Weight RoomsNew this summer in Weight Room South, there will be an hour of open gym time from 11am-12pm for Women Only lifting. A female staff person will be in the room to answer basic fitness questions. Weight Room South will also be opened for one hour during the week 10am-11am, while PE classes are in session in Weight Room North.

All Weight Room Supervisors can give you a general orientation to our fitness spaces, policies and equipment as well as act as a spotter when you’re lifting heavy weights but, be aware, that they are not certified personal trainers and are not permitted to act in that capacity.

Summer Group Fitness Options

The summer Rec Fitness program will be offered as a punch card drop-in format for the first time! Participants must purchase a NEW Summer 2011 Punch Card in Esslinger 102. It’s summer time, join us by jumping in the pool for the Zumba “pool party!” Splashing, stretching, twisting, even shouting, laughing, hooting and hollering are often heard during an Aqua Zumba workout. Aqua Zumba blends together a safe, challenging, water-based workout that’s cardio-conditioning, body-toning, and exhilarating on Wednesdays at 3pm. Another way to enjoy what summer offers, is to push yourself in the Boot Camp workouts outside on the Gerlinger Field, Tuesdays and Thursdays at 4pm. The workouts will vary from day to day, always focusing on full body exercises in high intensity intervals, addressing cardio and muscular endurance, strength, agility, balance, and flexibility.

Cardio RoomYou’ll notice some other new equipment before the end of summer as we work through our equipment replacement schedule.

Personal Training Personal Training appointments can be scheduled throughout the summer to help you revamp your routine or to get your started with an individualized program to meet your goals.

The Personal Training staff have open hours in the Weight Room (listed at the Fitness Services desk in the Cardio Room) where they can be accessible for general fitness and exercise questions. They can give advice on workouts, form and technique.

What’s with the hand scanners?

And other Frequently Asked

Questions

Why are hand scanners used at the Rec Center?

Numerous university recreation centers have used this technology for years. Benefits of the system include increased ease of entering the building, greater access control and increased accuracy with equipment check out. This helps protect the integrity of the fee members pay by reducing access of non-paying individuals.

Are summer classes shorter than during the regular year?

Summer PE classes meet the same number of hours (20) that PE classes meet in fall, winter, and spring. In fall, winter and spring our classes typically meet 2x a week for 10 weeks for a total of 20 hours. In summer session you’ll meet from 3-5 times a week (depending on the class) for 4 weeks, but your total in-class time is the same.

7I like the new south Weight Room much better. Why is it closed in the summer?

It is nice to hear so many of you value having the new auxiliary weight room. In the summer when usage of the REC is slower, we simply cannot justify the budgetary expense to keep both weight rooms open. During Summer Session Weight Room South will be open every time we are teaching a Weight Training class in Weight Room North so you will never be without a fully equipped space for your weight training. Other than those class times, the south weight room will close.

What are the pool recreational hours?

Leighton Pool will not be open for recreational swim this summer unfortunately. However, the outdoor Amazon Pool (located near 26th and Hilyard) will be open all summer for recreational swims.
