In many of these instances the cause is attributed to high levels of calcium in the urine. Calciumis absorbed from food and then excreted in the urine. High levels of calcium in the urine maycause calcium phosphate or calcium oxalate crystals to form in the urinary tract or kidneys andthese crystals then become stones in the kidneys.

Causes were also found when there is a decrease in urine volume or an excess of stone-formingsubstances in the urine. The causes can be traced back to their origin by determining what kindof stone it is. There are several types of stones such as: calcium stones, uric acid stones, cysteinestones, struvite stones (from infection), and other stones.

People who have had surgery in the intestine or around the stomach may be at a higher risk ofdeveloping kidney stones. This is because the normal absorption of minerals does not usuallyoccur and this abnormality may cause the stones to develop. Also, when the parathyroid glandsproduce too much hormone, calcium production increases and in turn kidney stones form. Thiscondition can also form due to geographical dispensation.
