Does your office accept my insurance?01• Even if the therapist is highly

recommended, you could still find a quality clinic that is covered by your insurance.

• If your insurance isn’t accepted, leave immediately to find a different therapist because each session could cost a couple hundred dollars each.

• An office may accept your insurance, but if the therapist is a “specialist,” your co-pay could be higher

What Is Your Specialty?

• Physical therapists, just like doctors, have specialty areas, and if the therapist you’re seeing doesn’t specialize in your injury, you could have an unproductive rehabilitation.

• If the therapist admits that they don’t have experience, they may be able to recommend a physical therapist.

Will my time be shared with other patients?

When starting your treatment, you should insist on private sessions because this will allow the therapist to really get to know your particular case and what works for you.

How many different therapists or assistantswill be handling my sessions?

• The therapist you talk to initially may not always be the one you see for your sessions.

• There may be a treatment plan drawn up that all the assistant’s follow, but it is best to have someone you meet regularly that helps judge how your recovery is going.

• If possible, get to know the clinics’ team before your treatments so that you can get the best care.

What is your highest degree of education?

• Along with this question, you might ask how many years they have been working.

• Sometimes, experience outweighs education, but it depends on the kind of experience.

• Use your best judgment to assess whether or not you think the therapist is adequately prepared based on their amount of experience as well as their education levels.

What will my treatment program look like?

• There is no reason to leave your first appointment with a physical therapist without knowing their plan for you. If you don’t like it, you can always get a second opinion.

• If you are uncertain or uncomfortable with any of the methods your therapist is explaining, don’t be shy—be sure to ask questions about why they are choosing that particular treatment, and voice your concerns.
