We Need More Land
(a) Divide the photograph into three sections — foreground, middle ground and background. Label the three sections at the side of the photograph.
(b) Describe the landuse in the foreground and the background.
(c) Explain why the landuse in the background is more commonly seen in Hong Kong than the landuse in the foreground.
1. The photograph below shows an area in Hong Kong. Study it and answer the questions that follow.
Background
Middle ground
Foreground
• Foreground — Vegetable farming
• Background — Housing
Due to the rapid population increase in Hong Kong, the demand for housing has increased.
More fl ats were built or expanded to cater to this increase in demand.
Target Skills:

Worksheet 7.270
(d) What is the opportunity cost of giving up the landuse in the foreground for the landuse in the background?
2. Complete the mind map below and answer the questions that follow.
(a) Explain briefl y how the rising demand for land can lead to an increase in the price of land.
(b) Land clearance is one of the ways to increase the supply of land. Describe one way in which land clearance can affect the environment negatively.
What are the responses to the rising demand for land?
Increasing price of land Increasing supply of land
Land clearance
In a country or a city where the land area available for use is limited and the demand
for land is high, there will be increased competition among users for the available
land. Some users may be willing to pay a higher price for the available land and this
will push up the price of the land.
There will be less land for vegetable farming and this may affect the supply of vegetables.
(Accept other plausible answers.)
Land reclamation
Land clearance by deforestation will have a negative impact on the environment.
When forests are cleared, the habitats of many plants and animals are destroyed. This
can affect the entire food chain and lead to the extinction of some plant and animal
species.
(Accept other plausible answers.)
Conserving land
Maximising use of existing land
