•Nursing home for people with dementia (mainly)
•Technology used: Personal Alarm System with 4 gradations of urgency
•Business model: rent of room and infrastructure, costs of care, hotel costs and
medical costs – last 3 costs = freedom of choice of provider

Visits2.Estuary View GP Practice
•GP Practice with multidisciplinary team: GP’s,
GP’s with special interests, and paramedics
(fysiotherapists)
•Advantages: patients can receive services that
are otherwise only offered in general hospitals (X-
ray, A&E for simple wounds, paramedic
consultations)

•Presentation of Telemedicine projects
• Da Vinci Surgical System
• Videoconferencing application used for CVA-patients
• Digitalization of tests (bloodpressure, temperature,…) – VitalPAC
system
Prioritization of patients
Monitoring of actions of nursing staff and departments

Large scale deployment within hospital (+/- 50 departments)

•Presentation of studies on Telemedicine
• 2004: Kent Telecare pilot
• 2005: Kent Telehealth pilot
• 2007: Whole System Demonstrator
Largest countrywide RCT study on assistive technologie (>1000 test
subjects)
Target group: patients with COPD, diabetes, chronic heart
conditions

Results regarding total amount of days in hospital:
• Positive outcome for use of telemedicine in comparison to
control group that was not provided with telemedicine
equipment
• Presentation of preliminary study on Telecare:
Group was provided with a Tunstall PAS-system: press button,
fire and CO-detector. Control group did not have a press button

•East Kent NHS hospital + University of Kent: technological innovations
•Innovative character of applications
Not the state-of-the-art aspect was impressive, but the often large
scale implementation of the applications in Kent County
Advantages demonstrated by several studies > innovation is
important and feasible
