Time effective EAP counselling and assessment in a brief model

Many organisations utilising an EAP for employees still opt for a 3-6 session brief intervention model approach.
The Psychologist / counsellor delivering the intervention needs to utilise the most appropriate assessment,
treatment / intervention and referral process that will maximise positive outcomes for the client in what for many
disorders can be seen as a very restricted opportunity for astute intervention. The most appropriate assessment
and treatment options will be discussed for this model of intervention along with insights into the advantages and
disadvantages of ’time restricted’ interventions for psychological disorders.

Kash is a Psychologist with 20 years of diverse experience in the field of psychology, mental health
and employee wellbeing. This includes EAP leadership and counselling, training and facilitation,
organisational consulting and the management of professional health teams. Kash has expertise in
the design, delivery and review of EAPs, employee wellbeing programs and Critical Incident
Management services. Having worked in the EAP arena for over 13 years, Kash is passionate about
the value and quality of EAPs and employee wellbeing programs.

Louis A. Servizio is President and Founder of the Disease Management Strategy Group, Inc. He has
25 years’ experience in the field of healthcare informatics, consulting, and financial advisory services.
In 1991, Mr. Servizio developed Wellcast ROI™, a decision support system that forecasts the financial
rates of return on pharmacological and non-pharmacological interventions that prevent or
reduce the effects of disease. Clients include corporate employers, disease management firms,
pharmaceutical companies, benefit consulting firms, and managed care institutions. In 2008, Mr.
Servizio migrated to Brazil, where he launched Wellcast ROI™ in the Brazilian market, and also
assumed the role of Executive Director of Chestnut Global Partners do Brasil, Ltda. a subsidiary of
Chestnut Global Partners, Inc., an international EAP with a presence in over 140 countries.
Mr. Servizio was also CEO of Clinical NetwoRx, a developer of electronic medical records (EMR’s), and founder of Medication Mis-
use Prevention Systems, Inc., which developed a decision support system that is used to prevent medication interactions among
the geriatric population. He has also held positions as Vice President of Data Resources, Inc. (now known as Global Insight), the
largest economic forecasting firm in the world, and as a consultant with McKinsey & Company.
Mr. Servizio holds a MS/MBA from MIT’s Sloan School of Management (Finance and Operations Research) and is a graduate of
Holy Cross, where he majored in Mathematics. He is a Certified Medical Practice Executive and a Certified Financial Advisor.
Grant Brecht | Managing Director, Insight Elite Performance Psychology
Grant is the managing Director of Insight Elite Performance Psychology, previously known as Grant
Brecht & Associates. Prior to Grant Brecht & Associates, Grant owned CORPsych, a Psychological
and Management consultancy company providing Leadership Development, Employee Assistance
Programs and Culture Enhancement services to many of Australia’s leading organisations.
CORPsych was eventually acquired by a large International group in 2003.
Grant has established an outstanding reputation in the implementation of Leadership Coaching and
Development, Culture Enhancement initiatives and Employee Assistance Programs for businesses �

Corporation to name a few. He has worked with many Executive Leadership Teams across the areas of Leadership and Team
development and Culture enhancement initiatives at both ELT and whole of organisation levels.
The application of psychological solutions including mental health, leadership, culture, self-efficacy development in the Elite
Sporting context is also one of Grant's core specialties. Grant and his team provide a range of services to elite sporting teams
including the AFL Sydney Swans Club, the Sydney Roosters NRL Club and Racing NSW. Grant and his team has now been involved
in 3 premiership wins and assisted in many finals series preparations.
Grant has an Honors Degree in Psychology from Flinders University in South Australia and completed his Master of Clinical
Psychology degree at Sydney University. Grant is an Australian Registered Psychologist with APHRA and a member of the College
of Clinical Psychologists with the Australian Psychological Association.
Grant was a founding member and former President of EAPAA. He was awarded EAPAA Life Membership in 2005.
Aron Neilson | Principal Lawyer, Accredited Specialist - Employment and Industrial Law, Slater and Gordon Lawyers

Aron Neilson is a NSW Law Society accredited specialist in employment and industrial law. He has a
broad range of clients including managing directors of global corporations and senior executives
engaged in the financial, property, manufacturing, health, IT and not-for-profit sectors.
Aron is recognised as a trusted advisor to employees engaged in the NSW and Commonwealth Public
Service and has many years of experience navigating the public service to protect his clients’ rights.
Aron has a hard won reputation as a tough litigator who conducts his cases with a commercial acumen
that is welcomed by his clients. It is this reputation that has seen Aron be referred significant

Dr Jenny George | CEO, Converge International
Dr Jenny George is the CEO of Converge International, joining the organisation in the role of CEO in
January 2016 after serving as a non-executive board director for 2 years.
Jenny has more than 15 years’ experience in executive roles at Melbourne Business School including
serving as Dean for two years. Jenny holds a B.Sc. (Hons) with first class honours in Operations
Research from the University of Canterbury, Christchurch, NZ and was awarded her PhD in Operations,
Information and Technology at the Graduate School of Business, Stanford University, California,
USA in 1999. She is also a member of the Australian Institute of Company Directors (AICD).

With extensive experience in leading best practice management of mental health and wellbeing
in response to potentially traumatic incidents, backed by the academic expertise of his research
in this field, Bernie is an engaging and knowledgeable facilitator and advisor on what makes
organisational responses effective.
With more than 14 years working with small, large, and iconic organisations to improve employee
performance and functioning, Bernie has held General Manager and National Director roles of
some of the largest psychology organisations across Australasia. During this time Bernie has developed and lead best practice
National Critical Incident Management programs. Bernie was Vice President / Executive of EAPAA: 2010 - 2014

Professor Maureen Dollard | Professor of Work and Organisational Psychology, Director and Head of the Asia Pacific
Centre for Work Health and Safety, a World Health Organization Collaborating Centre for
Occupational Health, University of South Australia.
Maureen is also Foundation President of the Asia Pacific Academy for Psychosocial Factors at Work,
and Co-chairs the International Commission on Occupational Health: Work Organisation and
Psychosocial Factors, Scientific Committee. She chaired the ICOH-WOPS conference in Adelaide,
during September 2014.
Her research goal has been to establish a national surveillance system of psychosocial (stress)
factors at work, The Australian Workplace Barometer, and the StressCafé (stresscafe.net). Since 2000 she has held 16 nationally
competitive research grants, 10 as lead CI, including 5 ARC Discovery Grants, and 9 ARC Linkage, and numerous industry grants
together totalling $6.3 million. She was lead Chief Investigator on an ARC International Linkage Grant with Utrecht University,
The Australian-Netherlands Project on Work & Stress Research.
In 2005 she convened a Roundtable on an Australian National Research Agenda and Action Plan for the Prevention of Psychosocial
Risk at Work, at the 2nd International Commission on Occ. Health (ICOH) International Conference in Japan. Twenty-nine eminent
international scientists (eg Kristensen, Siegrist, Kawakami) from 14 different countries attended. The Okayama Resolutions were
drafted to promote national action in Australia. She convened the 7th Australian I/O conference and the 1st Asia Pacific Congress
on Work and Organisational Psychology in Adelaide, 2007. Her research and consultancy is in the area of work stress and she
holds a PhD on the topic. She has worked with human service workers, correctional officers, Salvation Army officers, call centre
workers, ambulance officers, nurses, farmers and police officers, and has developed best practice models in psychological injury �

She has published 4 edited books and over 140 book chapters and refereed journal articles in the area. She serves on the
beyondblue Workplace Mental Health Advisory Group.
Maureen is on the editorial board of the Journal of Organisational Behavior; the European Journal of Work, and Organisational
Psychology; Work & Stress; and the International Advisory Board of the International Journal of Rural Management and the
EAWOP 2015 Congress Advisory Board. Her research in the area includes the impact of deregulation on dairy farmers and their
families; and a study of organophosphate farm pesticide use and well-being in rural children. Other research focuses on remote
health workers, remote development workers in India, and rural women entrepreneurs.
Jennifer Placanica | Chief Psychologist, NSW Police Force
Jennifer Placanica had experience as a registered nurse at St Vincent's Hospital and as practice manager of a busy general prac-
tice prior to studying psychology at Sydney University. Jennifer has worked with New South Wales Police for 16 years, and is cur-
rently the Chief psychologist of the psychology team. The team provides ongoing support, monitoring and assessment of fitness
for duty for NSWPF.
Michael Tunnecliffe | Clinical Psychologist / Director, BSS Psychology
Michael is a Clinical Psychologist with a background in mental health programs. For more than 30 years, he has provided
psychological services to clients from mining, offshore oil and gas, airlines and the emergency services. Prior to joining BSS,
Michael held the position of Executive Manager of the Psychology Unit with Western Australia Police. He also held the position
of Adjunct Senior Lecturer in Trauma Counselling at the University of Notre Dame Australia for 10 years. Michael is the author of
numerous articles and books.
Kerryn Ashford-Hatherly | Clinical Services Manager, BSS Psychology
Kerryn is a Clinical Psychologist Registrar with extensive experience working with dual-diagnosis alcohol and drug issues,
domestic violence and trauma. She has worked within the mental health field for 20 years, delivering services across a variety
of organisations. Kerryn’s expertise includes counselling, group facilitation and consultancy. In addition, Kerryn has delivered
training to organisations in peer support, mental health and the impact of fatigue, alcohol and drugs. Prior to joining BSS, Kerryn
worked as a Police Psychologist.
