We've all tried to lose weight with the question, "How many calories to lose weight?" Is it possible that we've all been barking up the wrong tree?

2. Weight loss slows down almost straightaway, in fact it grinds to a complete halt once it goes beyond a certain point. Nutritionists are aware of this, which is why they say that you have to combine dieting with more physical activity. They put into practice what they have always preached: eat fewer calories and burn more of them off. Of course, I did a diet like this too. I had reached 172 lbs (78 kg), thats 40 lbs (18 kg) over my ideal weight, given that Im 56 (1.70 m) with very light bone structure. I followed a 1,500 calorie-a-day diet, combined with a 90 minute run every other day. In just three months I had gone back to weighing 137 lbs (62 kg), and I appeared to be in great shape. Pity, though, that I looked wasted and drawn, and that everyone seemed to notice and ask me what was wrong. It was a pity too that I was living with a permanent cold, sinusitis that came and went, and chronic tiredness that I could never shake off. Obviously, at some point, my will power was bound to crumble, I mean, I had achieved my goal, and I thought I could take things easy from here on. Then, slowly but surely, I began to forget counting the calories I was supposed to eat to lose weight, and I even stopped running. The result was that I had put on all that weight again, reaching just over 187 lbs (85 kg), which was enough to land me back in amongst the dangerously obese for their size. What had happened was this: my body, through the all those illnesses, and my mind, using my own 3. laziness, had banded together to defend themselves against me and the way I was trying to lose weight, which was destroying them. When we impose a diet like this on our bodies, we put ourselves under an enormous physiological stress, which is impossible to maintain in the long run. Thats why these diets never work. The moment you stop, you regain all those lost pounds, and with interest to boot! The truth is: its pointless asking yourself how many calories youre supposed to eat to lose weight. Its actually more important knowing what kind of calories is best to eat to help you lose weight. Heres an example: If you drank a glass of a fizzy drink, or ate any kind of light snack that is available in the supermarket, youd introduce, lets say, 100 calories into your body. (The figures arent precise, but Ill keep them simple to make my point.) If you ate an apple, you would be introducing 100 calories into your body too, but theres a difference: not all calories are alike. The calories from the soda or the snack are empty calories, but the calories from the apple contain a whole range of vital nutrients, such a fibre, vitamins and minerals. The calories from the drink and snack are the type that gets burned up immediately, entering the bloodstream quickly and causing the blood sugar levels to spike dramatically. This effect hits the brain in very much the same way that a drug does, and like a drug, we get hooked on this sugar rush, because the crash afterwards can cause drowsiness, headaches, irritability and even depression. Your body soon learns to stop the crash by storing the excess calories into fat, at which point, all your efforts to lose weight are worthless. The calories from the apple, though, have to be worked on gradually, metabolized and assimilated slowly before they can be made available to your body for use. However, your body actually needs to burn around 30 calories just to assimilate the calories from the apple, which leaves only about 70 calories that your body can actually use. 4. So lets stop torturing ourselves over how many calories we can eat to lose weight, and lets start paying more attention to the quality of the calories that we actually consume. Instead of having a list of foods and how many calories they contain, you should have a table to help you choose the kinds of calories that also give you the nutrients that you need.
