Who, What, When, Where, and Why• Who: As students of Lakeside Middle School, we wanted to build an App that would benefit the
elderly
• What: We built an App that uses cheap earphones to amplify peoples voices so they can be
heard by people who are “Hard-of-Hearing.”
• When: This project was started just a few weeks ago using sample code from
https://developer.apple.com
• Where: The code was written partially at school and partially at home or on the daily commute
to school.
• Why: We noticed many patients at skilled nursing facilities and nursing homes are hard of
hearing, as well as some elderly family members. Some elderly people do not have hearing
aids. Clinicians at any given clinic only have one or two “PockeTalkers” due to cost, so they
have to “yell” at their patients so they can hear them. This not only harms the patient-clinician
relationship, but also is very disruptive and hard on the clinician and patient.
Today Clinicians have to
wait or do without when
communicating with the
“Hard of Hearing…”
Often there‟s only a couple of
Expensive
“PockeTalkers”
at any given
Skilled Nursing Facility
or Hospital and these devices
can get lost or be hard to find
http://www.libertyhealthsupply.com/SearchResults.asp?Search=pocketalkers&Submit=
Or you just want to look
“Cool”
like you‟re jamming to
some tunes…
(But really you‟re listening in on
the conversations around you…)
Questions To Be AddressedHow can we leverage the technology we carry in our pockets
everyday to enable anybody who is “Hard of Hearing” to hear and
join in on the conversations around them?
How can we have more pleasant conversations with our patients
without having to “yell” at them, just so they can hear us?
How can we have pleasant chats with “Grandma”
by the fireplace without having to raise our voices?
Key Insight Statements
• The Skilled Nursing Facility nearby has over 80 beds, but only 2
“PockeTalkers” that have to float between different wings.
• Most hearing aids rely on expensive and hard-to-replace watch
batteries. People forget to bring them or the batteries die and they
can‟t be easily replaced or changed.
• Sometimes you want to hear a conversation/lecture more clearly
without exerting a lot of effort, straining to catch each/every softly
spoken word.
Elevator Pitch
• Our team, IntelliNinja Productions, has developed a very low cost App to
help the “Hard-of-Hearing” join in on the conversations around them today!
• It can improve clinician/patient relations on it‟s first use!
• It can help the elderly out in the real world and even at home with family
and relatives to open up conversations without having to raise their voices!
• This App is available today for only 99 cents and is so easy to use we can
show you how it works right now while riding this elevator!
User Profile
• Older family member who is hard of hearing, but does not regularly
wear a hearing aid.
• Needs to converse with other family members or friends, but could
use a little bit of „audio enhancement‟ help from time to time,
especially if there‟s a lot of background noise.
• Works with any iPhone running iOS 7
• Uses any headphones, with or without an
integrated microphone! Even those
„cheap/free ones‟ you get on trains or tour
buses!
• Switches between built-in iPhone
Microphone or headset microphone
automatically!
• See your Voice Waveform on screen
in Real Time!
• Uses Integrated Volume Controls on your
iPhone or inline controls on your earphones!
• Quickly MUTE/UNMUTE by touching
anywhere on the screen!
• Auto-Silences on incoming calls!
Now Clinicians, relatives and
friends can communicate
with the hard of hearing with
Ease,
Convenience
and Low Cost!
The elderly or hard-of-hearing
can take part and be part of the
conversations around them at
any time!

Recommendations
Earphones with integrated microphones work as well,
however for Clinical Use, it‟s easier with cheap
earphones for the patient so Clinician can use the
iPhone integrated microphone to talk to the patient,
who would be wearing the earphones.
IntelliAmp starts off
in MUTE mode,
so patient hears
nothing
This allows the Clinician or user to
adjust the volume level before turning
on the sound…
Once the screen is
tapped, it goes into
an UNMUTED voice
amplification mode
Volume level can still
be adjusted up/down in
real time in UNMUTED
mode..
Incoming calls have
priority and automatically
silence IntelliAmp
and bring the call up to
the front
When you switch back
to IntelliAmp, you‟re
right where you left off.
Feasibility• Our team has already written the app and we plan on selling it for
$0.99, with some free give-aways to select individuals
• Donating the App for free to two practicing Speech Pathologists for
their professional opinions and feedback.
• We plan on gathering feedback for future versions based on AppStore
Feedback and email inquiries at our (soon to come) website.
• We have found various sources
for low-cost earphones.
