•  Removing a damaged joint and replacing it with a new one

•  Some joints may only need to be partially replaced

•  Most replacement surgeries are hips and knees

•  Replacement is usually due to arthritis and to relieve pain

•  Requiring pre operation blood testing to exclude underlying infection

•  Requiring a urine sample to

exclude underlying infection

•  Joint x-ray

•  May require chest x-ray

•  May require echocardiogram

JOINT CONNECTION LEARNING SESSION: SPECIAL CONSIDERATIONS

 •  Patients on blood thinners need to

stop medication prior to surgery

•  Any sign of infection need to be treated prior to surgery

•  Smokers are at increased risk of pneumonia following the procedure

JOINT CONNECTION LEARNING SESSION: POST OPERATIVE CONSIDERATIONS

•  Expect certain precautions after surgery

•  Pain may increase as you become more active

•  Keep wound dry until staples are removed

•  Your temperature may be slightly elevated for several days after surgery

•  Swelling is normal

•  Follow physician orders related to driving

Post operative function is determined by pre-operative function. Hence the more you exercise and strengthen your muscles prior to surgery, the better your outcome will be after surgery!

REHAB SELECT: WHO ARE WE?

•  Physical Therapy up to 7 days a week

•  Occupational Therapy up to 6 days a week

•  Speech Therapy up to 5 days a week

•  24 hour skilled nursing care to include medication administration and surgical care

•  Certified Nursing Assistance with Activities of Daily Living

•  Daily Physician/Nurse Practitioner visits 13

Home with Home Health •  Therapy for up to 1 hour per day

•  Therapy for up to 3 days per week

•  1-2 nursing visits per week

Prior to discharge, our rehabilitative team makes sure patients are ready for the challenges involved with returning home. Case Management meets with patients and families to make any needed referrals for equipment, home health, transportation, and follow up appointments with your physicians.

•  Length of Stay at Rehab Select for Average Knee Replacement is 7-14 days

•  Length of Stay at Rehab Select for Average Hip Replacement is 5-10 days

•  As of 2009, about 773,000 Americans have a hip or knee replaced each year

•  Average joint will last up to 20-25 years
