Kwakiutl District Council – Worklife Balance as Wellness

Our Focus: living out our mission – “Gawalla xa hamattalla”; “Helping our People”. We believe in the foundation of our potlatch life; that we must respect and honour our people by delivering health services that promote and uphold the dignity of our co-workers and the communities we work with.

Our Process: we have developed and implemented an Indigenous and holistic work-life balance policy.

Our Teachings: respecting and honouring our people allows us to deliver services and programs without stripping the dignity of the people we work with. This is carried out by raising staff awareness which in turn, increases community health around prevention behaviours, engaging in self care activities and promoting wellness on all levels. We provide the tools and education for everyone to become their own wellness champion.

Our Successes: ideas and actions that promote worklifebalance, decreased staff sick leaves, and an increase in community members accessing health promotion activities.

Seabird Island – A Lateral Kindness Movement

Our Focus: Addressing violence in the workplace and community – between staff and community members.

Our Process: Guided by the traditions and teaching as River People, implementing an Indigenous-based lateral kindness movement; to focus on kindness as a force and source of our individual and collective strengths – relational and collective focussed awareness, training sessions and concrete tools and ideas for implementing new behaviours.

Our Teachings: Our staff and community members want to return to and relate with people in a way that restores and strengthens the cultural fabric of our community. To relearn teachings from the past and chart a good way forward with everyone working together, with care and wisdom.

Our Successes: Active participation in our Wall of Kindness,random acts of kindness, attendance at learning sessions, reduced incidents of violence, staff retention, and staff and client satisfaction.

Carrier Sekani Family Services – Two-Eyed Seeing, Culture Heals

Our Focus: To confirm service believe and practice that seamless integration of culture and cultural practices along with clinical practices can further health and healing for substance use disorders.

Our Process: Joined a national research initiative to confirm existing believe and practice that culture heals. Based on successful research outcomes, developed an Indigenous Wellness Assessment Tool to demonstrate how culture is a valuable and impacting intervention for healing our community members and clients.

Our Teachings: Carrier Sekani people believe in land based healing that is rooted in cultural protocols, ancestral laws, traditions and teachings. The next step is to initiate a study at Ormond Lake, further affirm service approach and understand the fuller impacts of merging the two practices – clinical and cultural.

Our Successes: identify and develop and apply culture based indicators of health and wellness; implement new self evaluations for clients after their stay; track rates of sobriety after one year and #/% of program participants who choose to stay in their community for care and recovery.
