Many people think of hepatitis is the only problem that trouble the Liver. But major problem is Fatty Liver. Difficult to identify it because shows no symptoms. So identifying is not easy for general public and even for doctors.

Our body weight & height ratio Body Mass Index (BMI) should be between 18-23. Even 5% excess BMI indicates the problem of Fatty Liver

Liver is the metabolic Hqrs controlling more than 700 bio - chemical activities. It is as vital as Heart, Kidney, Lungs, Brain etc. Liver takes care of many life saving & supporting activities like

Digestion: Food we consume is converted to Chyme and goes to Liver from intestines. Fats, Proteins & Carbohydrates are are metabolised in the Liver and absorbed by the body. They are converted into essential substances for the body.

Energy Storage: The glucose after body utility is converted into fat and stored in the Liver. When body needs energy the fat in the Liver is converted into Glucose in the blood for circulation.

Liver - Production Unit: Metabolise Cholesterol, Enzymes, Fats Liver produces secretions that are very essential for Metabolic activity.

Liver - Big Filter: The poisonous ingredients of the foods, alcohol and medicines we consume are filtered and they are neutralized in our Liver. It also fight the harmful bacteria that enter into our body through various routes.

Fatty liver Problems - 3 Stages 1. Fatty Liver: This is beginning fat accumulates in the liver, but the efficiency of the liver is not reduced. Mostly asymptomatic or mild symptoms like gas, flatulence. Scanning helps in diagnosis. This is 100% curable

2. Steato Hepatitis: Excess fat, damaged liver with swelling & hardening is seen. Indigestion of fatty foods, pain in the left chest region. Yellow urine, muscle pains, joint pains are common symptoms. L. F. Test shows increased enzymes (SGOT/ SGPT). This stage is curable

3. Cirrhosis: Advanced stage. Liver is hardened like stone and damaged. Severe jaundice is seen. Ascitis, oedematous legs, anorexia, heamatemesis are some of the symptoms . Liver weight is reduced and the stage is very difficult to cure.

Metabolic syndrome is a silent killer as it is asymptomatic till advanced stage. People who consume animal protein, Obese, Diabetics, Hypertensives & people who lead sedentary life without proper exercise are having great threat of fatty liver.

Why Fatty Liver? Because our input is high and output is very poor. Leading to high Glucose levels in blood which is converted into fat. This is basis for fatty liver.

Other Reasons: Anti Epileptic/ TB, BP drugs on long term usage causes fatty liver. They contribute 20% but improper lifestyle contribute 80% for fatty liver. Fatty foods, carbohydrates, alcohol, smoke are major culprits.

Main cause - Insulin Resistance Insulin metabolise glucose. fats & conducts many bio-chemical functions. For obese though they have enough Insulin will not be very effective in its functioning. Metpharmin drug is given but lifestyle is vital. 40 min exercise/ day gives amazing results

Diagnosis: L. F. Test may not be very useful in diagnosis of fatty liver. US Scan, Elastoscan helps. Some times MRI, CT Scan of liver is essential for proper diagnosis.
