  • Dear Reader,

In an era when service quality standards in healthcare

domain is being debated at various forums in India

and across the world, Shalby clearly steers the

operations of 9 multi-specialty hospitals across Central

and Western India, which amply demonstrates Shalbys

    inherent capabilities and leadership.

Strictly adhering to the well ingrained Quality

Standards of Shalby Hospitals and imbibing its Core

Values - Excellence, Learning, Integrity, Teamwork and

Empathy (ELITE), we, at Shalby, Jabalpur focus on

continuum of expert health care for the people of

Shalby: In Pursuit of Providing Healthcare At Door Steps

Jabalpur and proximity areas. We have a well

orchestrated team of doctors handpicked from a wide

range of specialties to provide comprehensive, patient

centric, high quality healthcare to patients under one

roof. This approach is especially beneficial to patients

with multiple or complex medical problems as they get

one-stop shopping, be it scheduling doctor

appointments, coordinating testing and obtaining on-

the spot referrals or consultations for a positive

    outcome, saving precious time.

Though, the city of Jabalpur houses many Private and

Government hospitals, it is found to be inadequate

considering facilities for an astoundingly growing

population. Shalby is the first corporate healthcare

facility in Jabalpur incorporating latest infrastructure,

cost consideration and all specialties under one

umbrella. Our Homecare services with distinctive

features of product innovation, family and patient

education, cure and care@home, is bound to make a

difference in Jabalpurs current healthcare system.

With the recent launch of our multi-specialty hospital

in the City of Indore, Shalby has emerged as the single

largest hospital chain in the State of Madhya Pradesh.

Our aim of taking healthcare to the door-steps is

really gaining momentum and the days are not too far

when Shalby will replicate its healthcare model in

many other parts of India and across the world for

Preserving and Sustaining Quality Human Lives.

  • Asthma

    Shalby Times | Issue No. 5 | Volume No.19 | May 201604

Asthma is a common lung disorder in which

inflammation causes the bronchi to swell and narrow

the airways, creating breathing difficulties that may

range from mild to life-threatening. Asthma is a chronic

lung disease affecting your lungs. Asthma causes

wheezing, shortness of breath, chest pain and

coughing. In many instances, these symptoms appear

mostly at night or early morning. Some people with

asthma have these symptoms daily. People with

asthma often have asthma attacks. An asthma attack

occurs when something bothers your lungs. Airways

become swollen and inflamed, which makes it hard to

breathe. These attacks can be mild, moderate or

severe. Even though you may feel fine, an asthma

attack can occur anytime. Asthma affects 25 million

people in India, including 7 million children. Many

children outgrow their asthma. For others, it becomes a

lifelong condition. Most children develop symptoms

before the age of 5. More boys have asthma than girls.

In adults, there is no difference between men and

    women.

Managing your asthma correctly is very important for

leading an active and healthy life. Your first step in

managing your asthma should be forming a strong

partnership with your doctor. Together, you can

develop a personalized treatment plan to help control

    your symptoms.

The typical symptoms of asthma include: Shortness of

breath, Wheezing, Chest Tightness, Coughing. Every

person with asthma has different triggers that can

    bring on an asthma attack.

    Signs and symptoms of asthma

If you have these types of signs & Symptoms it's

the time to visit a chest specialist

Here are some typical triggers and ways to control them:

Animal Dander: Animal dander comes from the skin, hair or feathers of all warm-blooded pets including dogs, cats, birds, and rodents.

Cockroaches: Cockroaches and their droppings cause allergic reactions in many people.

Tobacco Smoke: If you have asthma, you should not smoke. No one should smoke in your home.

Cold Air: Breathing very cold air can irritate your airways and lead to an asthma attack.

Exercise: You do not have to avoid exercise because of your asthma. In fact, exercise is strongly encouraged. Talk to your doctor about developing a safe exercise plan.

Peak Flow Rate Monitoring: A peak flow meter is a device that measures how well air moves out of your lungs. The peak flow rate can be used to find out if there is narrowing in the airways.

  • Asthma

A drop in peak flow rate

    Coughing

    Wheezing

    Chest tightness

    Shortness of breath

Your doctor and asthma team might want you to record

your symptoms in an Asthma Symptom Diary. Talk to

your asthma team about keeping an asthma symptom

diary. Peak flow rates should be checked on a regular

basis and recorded. These readings will help your

doctor plan your care. A drop in peak flow usually

occurs before the other symptoms. This drop often

occurs days earlier. For many people, especially

children, the only sign of a problem is a cough,

    especially at night.

    Shalby Times | Issue No. 5 | Volume No.19 | May 2016 05

    Early warning signs include:

There is no single test for asthma. Doctors make the diagnosis of asthma when a person has breathing symptoms typical of asthma that come and go, and there is also evidence that sometimes air does not flow in and out of their lungs.

    Diagnosis

Dos & Donts in Asthma Management

Get up in the morning at a regular hour. At night go to sleep early, at the regular hour

Always maintain regularity in your daily work routine

    Do's of Asthma:

Do not disturb your daily routine

    Avoid hard drinks

    Refrain from smoking

Do not over eat; avoid foods which do not agree with our digestive system or which are known to cause allergy

Keep yourself away from smoke and dust

Keep your home pollution-free and clean. Have no rugs or carpets in your bedroom

    Don'ts of Asthma:

Asthma is treated with two types of medicines a long-

term medication and a quick relief medication.

Your treatment depends on the severity of your

symptoms. Once you begin taking medication, your

doctor will ask about your symptoms. He will also ask

about any side effects that you may be experiencing. If

symptoms are not under control, your doctor will

adjust your dose or try another medication. The goal is

to achieve maximum control with the least amount of

    medication.

    Treatment:

Do morning walks and perform yoga

Take a simple diet with minimum of spices, at regular hours. Have the dinner quite early-at least two hours before retiring

Keep your house, especially the bedroom, scrupulously clean and dust-free

Take your medicine regularly as directed by your doctor

Employ acupressure and magnet therapy regularly

    Cystic Hygromas in Unborn Babies

Cystic Hygromas are cysts or a group of cysts found mostly in the neck. Cystic Hygromas are caused by an error in the development of lymph sacs and lymph vessels as the baby is developing during pregnancy. By the end of the fifth week of pregnancy, the baby's lymphatic tissues form as lymph sacs, developed from veins.

tears as she was advised to abort the baby in view of the abnormality. She came to Shalby for a second opinion.

At Shalby our Gynecologist, Dr. Mitali Vasavada followed the systematic procedure of first assessing the presence of any other lethal abnormalities that the baby might have had and then making a detailed birthing plan for the mother. After a detailed anatomy scan of the baby in utero, it was concluded that this was a case of isolated cystic hygroma of the neck with no other major abnormalities. In Dr. Mitalis opinion the baby had a good chance of survival and normal life after birth, if disciplined antenatal care and monitoring were given and that abortion was not the only option.

After ruling out chromosomal abnormalities (these are sometimes the underlying cause of cystic hygroma), the pregnancy was followed with serial ultrasound scans. The pregnancy was then terminated at 37th week by C section. The baby was delivered in presence of our team of experienced Pediatric neonatologist and Pediatric surgeon.

A young, first time mother came to Shalby Well Womens Clinic at 7 months of pregnancy when she was detected with a mass growing in her unborn babys neck in an ultrasound done outside. She was in

I am Mary Kawila Nzasla, Kenyan aged 50. I Started

falling sick in early January 2014. I was treated for

minor illnesses such as typhoid & brucellosis but the

condition continued worsening. In August 2014, I was

transferred to Kenyetta National Hospital (Kenya) &

diagnosed with hemangioma of D8 vertebra with

paraplegia, with bowel & bladder involvement. The

condition compressed my nerves causing abdomen &

lower limps to paralyze. I was also put on TB Drugs

since Kenyan doctors suspected the worn out disc was

due to Tuberculosis. Dr. Lubanga, a neurosurgeon in

Kenyetta National Hospital (Kenya), advised me to go

for further treatment in India since there was no spine

specialist in Kenya. During my preparation, I came

across Shalby Clinic in Parklands-Kenya-who advised

me to undergo further treatment in their hospital in

India. In May 2015, I went to Krishna Shalby Hospital in

India where I was admitted & after a CT scan the

doctors decided to do minor surgery which was

embolization, after 48 hours they carried out the spine

Thank God, The Miracle Happened At Shalby, India

surgery which was followed by exercises after 24

hours. After the main surgery, a lot of improvements

were noted as I could turn myself at night and rise up

from the bed without any assistance, which I could not

do before! On returning to Kenya I was put on caliper

once, after which I was stable enough to stand with

crutches alone. By the end of June 2015, I was able to

walk comfortably with the help of clutches & without

calipers. The bowel started functioning & the catheter

was removed in July 2015. I walk for two kilometers

with the help of crutches. I thank god for the miracle, I

also thank Dr. Niraj Vasavada & Dr. Prateek Lodha of

Shalby Hospitals for their devoted service, assurance &

hope they gave me throughout the treatment period. I

also thank Dr. Prachin for his devotion in helping to

exercise & his encouragements throughout my

hospital stay in Krishna Shalby, India.

    Patients Speak

Thus, Mr. Salum along with his mother and father came

to Shalby on 1st February, 2016 and underwent the

    TKR surgery on 4th February.

I am totally relieved now and hoping to ride my

favorite motor cycle again. Shalby saved my leg from

amputation said Mr. Salum looking to the eyes of his

    parents with an overflowing emotion.

Like any other youngster, Mr. Salum Ahmed Bintash,

aged 19 years, was also celebrating a religious

function in his native town Tanzania on 18th July,

2015. He was riding a motorcycle without knowing the

impending accident. He suffered serious injuries on his

left leg and knee with a wide and deep wound. With

the help of passersby, he got admitted in the

Government hospital wherein he was treated for 45

days and plating etc. was done.

Since the hospital could not fix his knee problem,

recommended an Indian hospital in Delhi. Since the

wound was deep and wide, plastic surgery was

recommended at the hospital. He stayed there for two

months and got discharged with bandage after

removing the plates with an advice to mail MRI and CT

Scan after two and a half months so that further

    treatment course can be decided.

Back in Tanzania, we have complied with all the

    instructions of the Delhi hospital.

We got a reply from the hospital suggesting to revisit

the hospital for Total Knee Replacement (TKR) and a

quote for the surgery was also given said Salums

    father.

Following this, the family consulted a few

doctors in Dar-es-Salaam and finally a German

doctor. He advised two options for Salums knee

problem. Either to go for Plates which will not

help bending or folding the leg all through his

life or to opt for leg amputation and artificial leg,

    thereafter.

In the meantime, the sister-in-law of Salums

mother got in touch with an eminent Orthopedic

doctor in Kenya. The doctor was knowing about

Sha lby s exper t i se in Knee and Jo in t

Replacement and strongly advised the family to

chose Shalby Hospital, Ahmedabad for the TKR.
