A study conducted found that one night of lost sleep can lead to a shift in your

brain activity, that may cause you to crave more fatty foods. This just after one

night of poor sleep, what if every night you are not sleeping well? Can you

imagine the consequences?

A study conducted on 46 healthy individuals, between 21 and 50 years old. For

5 nights in a row they all slept at a sleep study clinic. 34 of the individuals were

in the sleep-deprived group on the second night, they were kept up the entire

night, while everyone else had 8 hours of sleep.

The participants ordered food from a menu, those that were awake all night

consumed an extra 950 calories, the following day the total calorie intake was

about the same for those in the no sleep group vs those in the sleep group.

However those in the sleep deprived group consumed much more fat than

those in the sleep group.

This study found that losing one night of sleep alters the brain salience

network. The salience network in the brain is what is thought to guide decision

making.

night shifts such as nurses, military employees may be more likely to choose

less healthy options due to lack of sleep. Do you work in any of these fields, do

you find the lack of sleep is taking a toll on your overall health. It may be

something that slowly happens over time, but the next time you find yourself

ordering take out or stopping at fast food, ask yourself are you getting enough

sleep?
