Tips to End Morning Anxiety

“Discipline and freedom are not mutually exclusive, but mutually dependent because without

discipline we would sink into chaos.”

- Paulo Coelho, lyricist and novelist.

Truly, having a disciplined and organized life can significantly impact one’s productivity, be it

at work or at home. And there is no greater way to set the right tone for the day than having

a good morning routine.

However, it is not easy for everyone to kick off the day on a positive note. In fact, a lot of

people start their day slow and slack, which usually culminates into feelings of anxiety,

sadness, worry or phobia all through the day. Morning anxiety is extremely stressful, yet very

common. Although at times the anxiety symptoms may seem to disappear as the day

progresses but most often, they persist in the form of stress lingering throughout the day.

While morning anxiety

can be attributed to

several reasons,

ranging from poor sleep

to bad diet to negative

morning experiences to

suffering from some

illnesses such as

insomnia or anxiety.

However, the good part

is that one can prevent

oneself from being

trapped by debilitating

anxiety symptoms by

giving the day a healthy

start.

One can adopt some habits or attitudes to fight and overcome morning anxiety or manage it

better, so that it does not overwhelm one’s life. Here are some simple tips to deal it and

reduce its occurrence:

1. Warding off the fear of getting late: Interestingly, most people sleep with the fear of

oversleeping the alarm. Such people may harbor thoughts such as “I am going to be late,” and

wake up with a rapid heartbeat and an anxious mind. This could also cause someone to keep

getting up time and again to check the clock to ensure they haven’t overslept, thus leading to

disturbed sleep. This can lead to anxiety-related symptoms, including the most debilitating

panic attacks. Therefore, it is a good idea to leave the bed a little early so that one has ample

time to get ready for work or do household chores, without experiencing morning anxiety.

One could also reassure oneself that they will be able to get up and so stay calm.

2. Getting sound sleep: Many people are deprived of sound sleep, which leaves them feeling

fatigued, drowsy and low on energy throughout the day, starting right in the morning. To

ward off any sleep-related disorders, it is important to stick to a bedtime routine and avoid

using one’s smartphone at least half an hour before going to bed.

One should also make sure that the bedroom is free from light and noise, and has an ideal

good temperature to ensure an ideal sleep environment.

3. Practicing relaxation techniques: Practicing certain techniques such as deep breathing,

progressive muscle relaxation (PMR) and meditation can go a long way in giving a positive

start to the day. Listening to gentle music can also help a person feel more at ease and hence,

mitigate anxiety symptoms if any.

4. Making positive affirmations: Negative thoughts can make a person extremely anxious.

Interestingly, daily positive affirmations can help in stemming negative thoughts and creating

space for positive thoughts in the mind. Using positive affirmations can keep one motivated

throughout the day.

5. Eating healthy breakfast: Having a healthy breakfast is a great way to kick start the day.

Eating a meal rich in amino acids and protein but low in carbohydrates is an effective way to

boost one’s mood and remain active all through the day.
