Understanding Approaches for Pain Management and
Patient Care
Presented by: Dr. Gregory Burzynski
There are many definitions of “integrative” health care, but each definition involves
bringing conventional and complementary approaches together in a coordinated way
in health care and pain management.
Defined Terms• If a non-mainstream practice is used together with
conventional medicine, it’s considered to be “integrative.”
• If a non-mainstream practice is used in place of conventional medicine, it’s considered to be “alternative.”
It is important to mention that for most people who use non-mainstream approaches to
health care and pain management, they also use them along with conventional treatments.
Pain Management and Health Care
Chronic pain is a common problem among active-duty military personnel and veterans.
The U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs, are sponsoring research to see whether integrative approaches can help.
The goal here is to help patients feel and function better and reduce their need for pain medicines that can have serious side effects.
Patient and Physician Relationships
• Healthcare professionals and professions help to achieve optimal health and healing.
• Integrative health and medicine simply offers best practices for optimal health and healing.
• Both doctors and patients continue to bond with the philosophy of integrative medicine and its “whole-person” approach which is designed to treat the person, not just the disease itself.
Integrative medicine depends on the partnership between both the patient and doctor where they agree on the common
goal to treat the mind, body, and spirit all at the same time.
