What is Substance Abuse? Many people use drugs in the society and others are not known unless one knows the symptoms of substance abuse and be able to differentiate it from symptoms caused by different illness. There are various symptoms associated with substance abuse. They vary from one person to another. One may experience depression due to the side effects. Loss of interest in activities can be a major symptom portrayed by a drug addict (SACFS.pdf). Some lack interest because their bodies are weak or having the feeling of being alone or the side effects of the drugs like fatigue. Those who are addicted to bhang may have suicidal thoughts or threats (SACFS.pdf).. This is because they feel that they have no value of living in this world and fears people will reject them. The side effects of bhang are outspoken as they gain extra strength of doing work and as the strength wears out they can decide to take their lives. Substance abuse may cause a person to be forgetful although it is not always a symptom of substance abuse.

People who get drunk on a daily basis, who spend less time with others in order to get drunk or feel high and drinking alone are other symptoms of substance abuse (SACFS.pdf). This shows that the individual cannot do without taking alcohol, which is harmful to their health.

Other symptoms include physical signs like loss or increase in appetite, red, watery eyes, unusual smells on breath, body or clothes, slowed or staggering walk, poor coordination, needle marks on lower arm, leg or bottom of feet, nausea, vomiting or excessive sweating, extreme hyperactivity, frequent twisting of the jaw, back and forth and deterioration of health.

Other behavioral signs are, drop in school performance or at work, change in activities or hobbies, great lack of motivation, being moody, car accidents, change in personal grooming, change of friends and unexplained need for money, stealing money or items among others.

In conclusion, one need to observe keenly for both physical and behavioral signs of an individual so that one can be able to know a drug addict.
