DESCRIPTION
The CMS Hospital Readmissions Reduction Program (HRR) was effective for discharges beginning on October 1, 2012 and reduces payments to IPPS hospitals with excess readmissions. Even if a hospital isn’t currently experiencing a penalty under the HRR, reducing readmissions now can help to reduce exposure to long term Medicare penalties.
