You've probably heard the saying "Jack of all trades but master of none"

I'm used to it – my degree was Business Studies and that's quite close to the definition. We had lots of topics and in reality skimmed the surface of most of them.

That works OK for initial education and it gave me an overview of the real world.

But specialising is where the real action is.

That applies just as much to internet marketing as it does to any other thing in life.

Things are too complicated to know everything about everything.

Even in something that appears to be a drill-down, there are differences between AdWords, Facebook ads, regular ads, retargeting ads, lower tier networks (Outbrain, 7Search, etc.)

The same goes for the niche you're in.

I just got sent a list of sub niches (it was part of a pitch to buy a product aimed at selling email newsletters to people) and it had 16 sub niches for weight loss, 28 for dating and 20 for online marketing.

And some of those were still quite broad.

If your online internet marketing isn't going to plan or seems to have stalled, take a bit of time to work out whether or not you've drilled down far enough.

If you're still at the "everything" stage then you definitely need to do this.

But even if you're in a narrower market, this still applies.

Take my affiliate business.

I often glibly say that I'm in the self help/personal development niche.

But that's huge.

If I'm pushed, I'll say that I prefer meditations, hypnosis and subliminals.

But in reality I'm in sub niches of each of those.

Why?

Because they're too big on their own.

One hypnosis program I promote has over 1,000 tracks available.

That's up from a few hundred when I first started promoting them over a decade ago.

They cover confidence, weight loss, dating, personal problems, improving skills and much more.

Way too many to concentrate on.

Likewise with meditation I usually home in on binaural beats rather than any of the other umpteen methods although I do sometimes talk about breathing and walking meditations as well.

Some of that is because I like to have some diversity.

I don't like writing or recording stuff about the exact same topic day in, day out.

So I can pick and choose a bit.

But it's all still in the same approximate sub niche, so anyone finding my sites or subscribing to my newsletters can probably relate to the topics I cover.

Some of it is because I like the scatter gun approach.

You never know ahead of time precisely what will generate traffic.

Keyword tools guess at numbers, even though they try to make themselves look precise.

Competitor analysis tools are even closer to a crystal ball – without access to the analytics or log files of the sites, they don't know the numbers even if they claim they do.

So take the time to decide your internet marketing model.

One of the reasons I like affiliate marketing is that you can test a new sub niche without too much effort.

Pick a product – ideally from a vendor you've promoted before so that you know the likelihood of it converting.

Create a few pieces of content – a video like this one, the slides turned into an article works nicely.

Put the content somewhere – YouTube, Facebook, your own site.

Tweet about it and generally try to get some traction.

Repeat a few times – I like the process of concentrating on a sub niche for a few weeks because it's more likely something will stick than if you just create one lonely piece of content.

Monitor the results.

Do that in half a dozen different possible niches – one a month for the next 6 months – and you'll have a much better idea what works for you as well as for your potential customers.

So if you like making videos like this one, great.

If that fills you with dread and you get tongue tied, do blog posts and Facebook groups instead.

Your choice.

But you won't know until you test the water.

All the theory in the world doesn't help you to find out what actually works.

This kind of semi-scientific approach works well.

It's a good compromise between guessing and over-analysis.
