It’s difficult to imagine our lives without the internet. From surfing the web, to online banking, to watching TV and movies the internet can be used for a countless number of things. There are many important, interesting facts about the internet that people do not know:

Did you know that there is an average of 3.2 billon people who use the internet out of which 1.7 billion of them are Asians?

There are 3 billion Google searches and 200 billion emails that take place every day.

This is a really interesting one. China houses internet addicts in treatment camps and there are 200 million people who use the internet between the ages of 15 – 35. 40% of internet addicts in China suffer from ADHD or Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder.

There are 30,000 different web pages that are hacked on a daily basis. Cybercriminals and other hackers use software to detect vulnerabilities in other websites. “See why it’s so important to keep our sites secured?”

We found this one kind of funny. The first webcam that was ever created was made at the University of Cambridge to keep track of a coffee pot. The video feed was a grayscale picture sized 128x128 that kept track of the pot.

“Gangnam Style” by PSY is the most viewed video of all time on YouTube. It has more than 2.45 billion views. We definitely didn’t know this one.

70 percent of all emails that are sent on the internet are spam. There are about 204 million emails sent every minute on the internet.

50 million is used to keep the internet running.

The maximum speed of broadband internet in 2005 was 2 Megabits per second. Currently, broadband speeds can reach up to 100 Megabits per second. Experts have advised that fiber optics can take no more data and the limits for broadband speed have been reached.

The first tweet ever was sent by the CEO and Co-Founder of Twitter Jack Dorsey on March 21st, 2006.

The first YouTube video that was ever uploaded was titled “Meet at the Zoo” by Jawed Karim and was posted to the website on the 23rd of April, 2005 at 8:27 PM.

There are 9 million British adults and a third of Italians that have never once used the internet.

Most internet traffic is created by malware and bots and not humans. This automated, “fake” traffic accounts for nearly 2/3rds of all traffic on the web.

South Korea, has the fastest internet speed averaging at 23 Megabits per second. America is 12th at 11.5 Megabits per second. England comes in at 18 (10.7 Megabits/second), Canada ranks 20th (10.3 Megabits/second) and Australia is 30th (6.69 Megabits/second).

Gmail started off as an email service for Garfield fans that was free. Google acquired gmail.com in 2005 for an undisclosed amount of money.
