Known to be the most well known scientist of the twentieth
century, Albert Einstein was born with the learning disability. He
was not in a position to talk until his was three and could not
learn anything till he turned eight. He had hard times
comprehending Mathematics while in school. Despite all these,
he grew up to develop and formulate end number of theories and
scientific papers, especially in Physics. He was even awarded with
the 1921 Nobel Prize in Physics.
Credited for introducing the first practical telephone, Alexander
Graham Bell is one such eminent inventor who falls into the
category of famous people with disability. He had dyslexia
causing problems during his learning years in school. He was as
well unresponsiveness towards anything in life except science.
But due to his sole interest in the field of science, he did
pioneering work in hydrofoils, optical telecommunications and
aeronautics and by 1888; he became an active member of the
National Geographic Society.
A notable figure not only in the history of American animation
industry but also renowned all over the globe, Walt Disney
suffered from learning disabilities during the early stage of his
growing years. But this could not become the obstacle in his path
of success as an international icon during the twentieth century
for extreme contributions in the arena of entertainment. Even
today he is remembered as a remarkable innovator in theme park
design and animation.
The inventor of electric bulb along with other thousands of
creations, Thomas Edison’s name appears along with the top 10
famous people with disabilities only because he had dyslexia. He
could not speak anything properly and hated Mathematics. He
had to undergo a rough phase during his schooling years and
was regarded too dumb by his teacher and schoolmates. Later he
was appreciated for moulding out many life changing devices
including the the motion picture camera and the phonograph.
Helen Adams Keller was the first deaf-blind person to graduate out
successfully with a Bachelor of Arts degree. She even became a renowned
author and activist in America. Her disability did not pull her back from
travelling to various parts of the world and to show her disagreements
towards war. Furthermore, she was involved in a number of progressive
causes such as workers’ rights, women’s suffrage and socialism. During
1920, Helen Keller even contributed in the formation of the American Civil
Liberties Union (ACLU).
Diagnosed with motor neuron disease at the young age of twenty one,
Stephen Hawking is a well reputed English theoretical physicist, author and
cosmologist. Regardless of the illness, he continued to carry on his scientific
works concerning cosmology and his own theories. He was even the Director
of Research at the Centre for Theoretical Cosmology within the University of
Cambridge. He is even a vocal supporter of interpretations of quantum
mechanics. Since 2009 he has been completely paralyzed.
A prominent musical figure from the transitioning phase of
Classical to Romantic eras in the Western art music, Ludwig Van
Beethoven suffered from a acute form of tinnitus. The disease
appeared to him when he had spent only twenty six years of his
life making him completely deaf. He struggled with it and by the
time he breathed his last he had composed nine symphonies, 32
piano sonatas, five concertos for piano and 16 string quartets
along with other choral works, chamber music and songs. He is
one of the famous people that have disabilities and yet fight it.
Marla Runyan is a three-time national champion American track and field
athlete despite the fact that she is legally blind. At the 1992 Summer
Paralympics, she won four gold medals for long jump and the 100, 200, and
400 meter races. Later in 1999 Marla went on to win another gold medal in
1,500-meter race during the Pan American Games. She as well qualified for
the 2004 Summer Olympic Games after finishing at second spot in the
United States Olympic Trials. Marla Runyan was born on 4th January, 1969
in Santa Maria, California.
Suffering from dyslexic, the 28th President of the United States, Woodrow
Wilson had learning disabilities during his growing years. Once he became a
part of the American politics he showed out to be a highly effectual partisan
campaigner and a legislative strategist with excellent mastery over political
language. Apart from being elected for the highest post in the nation on 4th
March, 1913; Woodrow Wilson was also the 34th Governor of New Jersey
and the 13th President of Princeton University from 1911 – 1913 and 1902 –
1910 respectively.
Sudha Chandran
Sudha Chandran is a famous Indian actress and an accomplished
Bharatanatyam dancer in spite of losing her leg in an accident. She had
displayed her talents in overseas locations including Canada, Europe,
Middle East etc and had been honored with a number of awards. Sudha was
born in in Irinjalakuda, Kerala and holds a Masters Degree in Economics.
Thus she is included in the list of famous people with disabilities.
